With 11% of the world’s population, 24% of global disease burden, 3% of the world’s healthcare workforce and only 1% of global health expenditure, expanding access to quality and affordable healthcare is a top development priority for Africa’s governments.

While there have been significant efforts to improve healthcare at every level, challenges at the baseline of the health pyramid commonly hinder access to equitable care. In particular, addressing primary and referral care is an important step toward delivering improved outcomes in maternal and child health as well as tackling the rising prevalence of non-communicable disease.
