He added that this is ironic as it is being experienced in a country considered to be growing and emerging.

“The world has become divided as we see people with a lot to eat on one side and on the other side, there is over 800 million people without enough to eat,” said Fan in an interview with CNBC Africa.

He called for action stating that more needs to be done to ensure every child in China has a balanced diet.

“The country has also seen an increase in obesity and overweight [people], and that needs to be cut down,” Fan added.

The International Food Policy Institute has over 25 nutritionists who devise interventions that combine nutrition with economics, agricultural production and good food security.

Fan called for global leaders to ensure that every human being has access to a good diet.

“A good balanced diet - no matter how much you eat, you must have a good proportion of protein, plant protein as well as fat.  A more balanced diet is essential to have a healthy, productive life,” he said.

Fan added that successes had been registered in many emerging economies, including China and India where small older farmers have produced more food for poor and hungry communities.

“Thailand is one of the most successful stories, where approaches such agriculture, nutrition interventions as well as social protection are combined together,” he said.

“Africa has made tremendous progress with notable examples of Ethiopia, Ghana and Nigeria in eradicating hunger and malnutrition, but challenges remain.”
