Tiger Brands recalls products after finding traces of carcinogens

The colourants Methyl Yellow and Sudan 1, which were found in the products, contain possible toxic and carcinogenic properties and are described by the World Health Organisation as a possible risk to human health.

[DATA TBS:Tiger Brands] has asked consumers who purchased the Simply Delicious cook-in-sauces or ready-to-eat rice products, produced in either June or July 2014, to return it to the store. Customers will receive a refund in the form of a coupon to the value of the product.

“We apologise to consumers and we also want to reassure consumers that the problem affects only these specific batches of Simply Delicious product, and that all other Tastic rice products meet our very high standards of perfection,” the company said.

Tiger Brands added that the Simply Delicious products would be back in stores as soon as it met their quality standards.

“The recall affects seven of a 20-product range, or less than one per cent of Tiger's rice business,” Naresh Singh, managing executive of its rice and pasta business told news agency, Reuters.
