S.Africa's January headline CPI slows sharply to 4.4%

South Africa's headline consumer inflation slowed more than expected to 4.4 per cent year-on-year in January.

This was from 5.3 per cent in December, data from Statistics South Africa showed on Wednesday.

On a month-on-month basis, prices were down 0.2 per cent in January, following a similar contraction previously.

Economists polled by Reuters expected CPI to brake to 4.5 per cent year-on-year in January while prices were expected to ease by 0.1 per cent month-on-month.

Core inflation, which excludes the prices of food, non-alcoholic beverages, petrol and energy, edged higher to 5.8 per cent from 5.7 per cent year-on-year, and to 0.4 per cent month-on-month from 0.2 per cent.
