Siyabonga Gama, currently chief executive of Transnet Freight Rail, will act as the group CEO with immediate effect.

This follows the secondment of Brian Molefe to the role of acting CEO of Eskom.

“Mr Gama will assume all the responsibilities of the GCE for the duration of Mr Molefe’s secondment,” Transnet said.

“Siya is well known to all of us. As CE of Transnet Freight Rail, he has transformed the operating division from yearly losses averaging 21 million rand in 2005 to 5.1 billion rand profit in the last financial year.”

The freight logistics company added that Gama served as the first CE of the National Ports Authority, amongst other roles at Transnet.

“He is an experienced and highly regarded executive, both within and outside Transnet,” it said.

“On behalf of all of us in the board, the group executive committee and the Transnet family, we wish to thank Mr Gama for accepting this challenging task. He is guaranteed our unwavering support.”
