The scaffolding of a a support structure that was erected by Murray & Roberts to enable the construction of a pedestrian bridge over the M1, collapsed earlier today. Its share price fell 7 per cent. Netcare 911 reported that two people died and around 20 are injured. Murray & Roberts says "it offers its condolences to the families of the deceased and sympathy to those injured".

The constuction company said "the exact cause of the incident is not known at this time. All of our incident response procedures have been initiated, our support services have been mobilised and relevant authorities have been advised. Emergency services are on site – any injuries or fatalities cannot be confirmed at this point in time".
"At least five of the injured are critical and the numbers may change as there are still people trapped beneath the structure," said Chris Botha, a spokesman for Netcare 911, a privately-owned emergency services company.
