Local and international media gathered at Oscar Pistorius’s new home in Waterkloof, with most expecting to get a first glimpse of him following his release from prison last night.
Pistorius was released from Kgosi Mampuru Prison in Pretoria on what has been described as an operational decision.
The convicted blade runner will be expected to adhere to correctional supervision with an officer allocated to him.
Legal expert Karin van Eck from Van Eck Attorneys said Pistorius’s after hours release was weird as this had no known precedence.
The disgraced paralympian gold medallist served a fifth of his five year prison sentence after being convicted for culpable homicide by Judge Thokozile Masipa.
Pistorius shot dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on the 14 February 2013; he alleges that he thought it was an intruder.
“It is important to emphasise that Oscar’s prison sentence has not been reduced but he is simply entering another phase where he will be under strict supervision,” Family Spokesperson Annaliese Burgess said.
“The family is happy that Oscar is home and he will be expected to strictly adhere to the conditions of his release.”
