CNBC Africa statement on Xenophobia
Fri, 30 May 2008
CNBC Africa has taken an official stand against Xenophobia and the attacks on people of foreign origin living in South Africa.Speaking at the celebration of the business news channel’s first year anniversary, Gary Alfonso, Chief Operating Officer of CNBC Africa, said the channel’s management and all staff in all regions universally condemn any acts of xenophobia or violence against foreigners living in or visiting South Africa.
“For this reason, CNBC Africa will be donating R250 000,00 worth of commercial airtime to companies and organizations wishing to place advertising fighting xenophobia or promoting peaceful co-existence in Africa and South Africa”, said Alfonso.
Alfonso emphasized that CNBC Africa hoped companies would take up the offer and would respond generously and help combat xenophobia and its debilitating effects. CNBC Africa also challenged other broadcast media companies to do the same.
