<p>Concerns are mounting over the wanton spate of abductions of school children by armed gangs in the Northern part of Nigeria, particularly, in Kaduna State, where, this week, no fewer than 150 students were abducted, making the latest in a series of cases. This signals a high threat to the education of children in the region. According to the United Nations, at least 950 students have been abducted from their schools for ransom by armed men since December last year. UNICEF has raised concerns that these violent activities will increase in West and Central Africa due to the redirection of non-state armed groups who will opt for kidnap-for-ransom in the coming weeks ahead. But an interesting candidate has drawn the attention of the world as she announced her decision to run for Secretary General post via twitter. 34 year old Arora Akanksha is an auditor at the UN, and not only is she the youngest candidate to ever run for this post but she running to be the first ever woman in this position. CNBC Africa sat down with her to find out what she plans to do.</p>

<p>UNICEF says malnutrition costs the global economy $3.5 trillion annually. Unitlife, a United Nations initiative dedicated to this cause, is making a case for investment to reduce chronic malnutrition by one-third, globally. This, Unitlife says would generate about $417 billion in economic benefits. Assia Sidibe, Director of the Secretariat at Unitlife joins CNBC Africa for more.</p>

<p>According to a report by the United Nations, gold production in the Democratic Republic of Congo is underreported while tonnes of the precious metal is smuggled into global supply chains. The report further indicated that the government lost up to $1.88million in taxes through the smuggling of at least 1.1 tonnes out of Ituri Province alone in 2019. <p>BANGUI (Reuters) &#8211; Deposed former Central African Republic President Francois Bozize announced on Saturday his candidacy for the December presidential vote despite being under U.N. sanctions and subject to an arrest warrant for alleged crimes against humanity.</p>



<p>He made the expected announcement in a speech to a large crowd of supporters at a congress of his party Kwa na Kwa (Work, Nothing But Work) in the capital Bangui.</p>



<p>The 73-year-old former general and army chief was overthrown in a 2013 rebellion by a coalition of mainly Muslim rebels from the north, plunging the majority Christian nation into a violent civil war and an acute and ongoing humanitarian crisis.</p>



<p>“The country needs a man of experience, peace and conviction,” Bozize said in the speech that criticised the tenure of current president, Faustin-Archange Touadera.</p>



<p>Bozize first took power after a 2003 coup and served 10 years as president, before fleeing the country in 2013. The new administration sought his arrest for alleged crimes against humanity and incitement to genocide, but has not moved to detain him since he returned from exile late last year.</p>



<p>It is not clear how the warrant or foreign sanctions will affect his candidacy. In January, Bozize said he would ask the United Nations to lift the sanctions imposed in 2014 over his alleged support for ‘anti-balaka’ Christian militias.</p>



<p>Touadera, who was elected in 2016, is expected to seek a second term in the election but has not yet confirmed he will run. The first round of the race is scheduled for December 27.</p>



<p>Most of the diamond-rich country remains beyond government control as rival militias continue to clash. The violence has forced more than 1.5 million people to flee their homes.</p>

<p>Africa needs to spend 28.6 billion-a-year until 2030 to have any hope of to closing Africa’s yawning energy gap, but it is unclear where the money will come from.</p>



<p>Most Africans live without electricity as most nations struggle to generate the electricity the continent’s emerging economies need. South Africa’s national power generator Eskom – with a struggling national grid putting out 40,000 MW &#8211; generates half of the continent’s electricity. Even South Africa struggles to keep the lights on and countries with tiny electricity, like Malawi, struggle even more and find it an obstacle to growth. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>Nigerian Damilola Ogunbiyi, the special representative for sustainable energy foraAll and Co-Chair of United Nations-Energy, confirmed that the energy gap in Africa was huge and would need at least $28.6 billion-a-year, until 2030, to close it. She told CNBC Africa that the question was how to gather the money.</p>



<p>“We need everything on the table. We need public sector support and also private money to come in. There can’t be one source of money. We need to convince private investors that putting power into Africa it is an investment,” says Ogunbiyi. &nbsp;</p>



<p>“I think what this pandemic has taught us is that if we don’t work together, then everyone is going to suffer. &nbsp;</p>



<p>Ogunbiyi was encouraged greatly by the electrification programme in the country of her birth. She said five million Nigerians, in rural areas, had been connected to solar power.</p>



<p>“In a large scale oil energy producing nation, that is not bad,” she says</p>
