Lindiwe Zulu outlines SA’s plans to help the vulnerable during COVID-19 crisis

South Africa has been hit hard by the COVID-19 crisis, especially impacting the most vulnerable in the country. In response to this, the government has increased the amount it pays in social grants to provide some relief to those in need. Additionally, a special COVID-19 relief grant of 350 rand a month was introduced for individuals who are currently unemployed and do not receive any other form of social grant benefits. The Minister of Social Development, Lindiwe Zulu, shared insights into the country's plans for social development during these challenging times. Zulu highlighted the continued pressure on the Department of Social Development to assist those who are struggling to make ends meet. As South Africa transitions to level three of lockdown, the demand for support is expected to persist, particularly for individuals who rely on day-to-day income. Minister Zulu disclosed that 6 million people applied for the 350 rand relief grant, out of which 3.1 million have been approved after thorough checks to ensure they are not receiving any other form of financial assistance. The distribution of funds is underway through banks and post offices to reach the approved beneficiaries. Despite the efforts to provide aid, Minister Zulu emphasized that the challenges are far from over, especially as the economic environment remains bleak. She acknowledged the financial constraints faced by the government and indicated that additional budget allocations might be difficult given the fiscal strain. However, Zulu remains committed to ensuring that those in need receive the support they deserve. She highlighted the importance of revitalizing the economy to create more job opportunities and alleviate the burden on social welfare programs. Zulu also stressed the significance of individual responsibility in curbing the spread of COVID-19 to facilitate the reopening of economic activities.
