This initiative looks to empower Rwandans with skills to become world-class engineers

In a bid to empower Rwandans with the necessary skills to become world-class engineers, the Ministry of ICT in Rwanda, in partnership with Andela, has launched a Technical Leadership Program. This program aims to train and guide 100 individuals over the course of a year, providing them with the tools to achieve their career ambitions and become successful engineers. CNBC Africa had the opportunity to speak with Mike Ndimurukundo, the Managing Director of Andela Rwanda, to shed light on this groundbreaking initiative. The Technical Leadership Program commenced with the learning and training phase in July of this year. Despite the challenges posed by the global pandemic and the lockdown, the program has successfully moved forward with the launch of the apprenticeship component. Companies are now being informed about the availability of trained individuals who are ready to join their workforce, offering them the chance to apply and potentially onboard these skilled engineers. This initiative is a continuation and expansion of Andela's existing partnership with the Ministry of ICT and RDB since 2018, solidifying efforts to drive technological advancement in Rwanda. Unlike before, this new phase of collaboration focuses on connecting trained engineers directly with companies within the ecosystem, allowing for seamless integration and employment opportunities. The transition to a remote work model due to the COVID-19 pandemic has been a significant adjustment for organizations worldwide, and Andela Rwanda is no exception. While the physical office space at the University of Rwanda remains closed, Ndimurukundo highlighted that Andela was already structured as a remote-first company. From utilizing communication tools like Zoom and Slack to implementing agile methodologies, the engineers at Andela were well-prepared for remote work. However, challenges such as internet connectivity and access to suitable devices were addressed by providing stipends for internet services and distributing laptops to those in need. Despite the transition, the team is looking forward to gradually reopening the physical office space to facilitate in-person interactions. Regarding the Apprenticeship program, Ndimurukundo expressed optimism about the retention rate of engineers within partner companies. With a target of engaging 50 local organizations, the response has been overwhelmingly positive, with 42 to 43 companies already onboard. The goal is to achieve a 50% retention rate, ensuring that companies retain and absorb trained engineers into their workforce, thus fostering a sustainable talent pipeline within the ecosystem. The demand for entry-level engineers in Rwanda is soaring, with the Technical Leadership Program oversubscribed with 118 participants, surpassing the initial target of 100 individuals. Despite the challenges presented by the pandemic, the enthusiasm and dedication of aspiring engineers remain unwavering. Ndimurukundo noted that the program has received an influx of applications and interest, indicating a strong desire among young Rwandans to pursue a career in the tech sector. As Andela Rwanda continues to nurture and empower the next generation of engineers through its Technical Leadership Program, the ripple effect of this initiative is poised to revolutionize the tech ecosystem in Rwanda and equip individuals with the skills needed to thrive in the global marketplace.
