Saudi Tourism Minister: Time has come to share great Saudi culture & hospitality with the rest of the world

Saudi Arabia is set to boost its tourism potential and strengthen ties with Africa as part of its efforts to diversify the economy. In a recent interview on CNBC Africa, His Excellency Ahmed Al-Khateeb, the Minister of Tourism for Saudi Arabia, discussed the Kingdom's vision to share its rich culture and hospitality with the world. Al-Khateeb highlighted that tourism is a vital pillar of the Saudi economy and a key focus of Vision 2030, the country's ambitious development plan. Currently, tourism contributes about 3% to the Saudi GDP and 4% to job creation, with the goal of increasing these figures to 10% by 2030. The Minister emphasized the importance of Africa as a key market for tourism, with the region experiencing significant growth in this sector. He outlined plans to invest $500 billion in developing 15 new tourist destinations across Saudi Arabia, including sites at the Red Sea, historical sites, and entertainment cities. Al-Khateeb also confirmed that the Kingdom is prioritizing vaccination efforts to ensure the safety of visitors and plans to open its borders soon. Additionally, he mentioned the recent launch of the first UNWTO regional office for the Middle East to support tourism development in the region. The Minister highlighted that while oil and gas will remain essential to the Saudi economy, diversification is crucial, with tourism being a key sector for growth. He emphasized the country's strategic location and resources that can support industries beyond oil and gas. Al-Khateeb addressed the issue of women's rights and tourism in Saudi Arabia, stating that the Kingdom is open to visitors and has previously welcomed tourists who experienced the country's hospitality and culture. He reiterated Saudi Arabia's commitment to sharing its culture and attractions with the world. The interview also touched upon the Saudi Fund for Development, a key player in providing grants and loans to countries, particularly in Africa. The Fund has supported over 600 projects in Africa, contributing to infrastructure development and job creation. Al-Khateeb emphasized Africa's importance as a strategic partner for Saudi Arabia, highlighting the mutual benefits of collaboration in economic diversification and tourism promotion. The Minister attended the G20 summit in Nairobi to share knowledge and lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic and to strengthen ties with African countries. Overall, Saudi Arabia's vision for tourism development and partnership with Africa reflects its commitment to economic growth and cultural exchange on a global scale.
