South African mines minister may extend talks over empowerment rules

South Africa’s mines minister said on Friday he was willing to extend the 30 day period of consultation with industry players over a new draft of the Mining Charter which states firms need to keep black ownership at 26 percent.

Mining companies have opposed the proposed rules published last Friday by the mining ministry.

“If there are issues that need us to go beyond that time we will do so,” Mosebenzi Zwane told a business briefing.
