<p>There is little denying that there is a new breeze flowing through South Africa with a matching optimism found in business confidence and that the new order will arrest the drain of fund we have seen flowing from state owned institutions.</p>


BLSA welcomes probe into state capture

<p>(DAVOS) Leaden skies sent forth a blizzard over the 48th gathering of the World Economic Forum in the ski-resort of Davos in Switzerland, the highest and surely the coldest spot in Europe, where South African delegates hope to shed light on the future of their national power generator Eskom.</p>
<p>Delegates arriving at the gathering of thousands of top world business names plus heads of state and ministers from 70 countries said it was the worst weather they had seen for years and snowdrifts saw traffic into Davos held up for hours.</p>
<p>A large and strong South African delegation will be at Davos &#8211; at least seven ministers including Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba. They will be led by President-elect Cyril Ramaphosa who is on a mission to clean up and beef up the country&#8217;s wavering economy. Other South African names including billionaire Patrice Motsepe and Bonang Mohale the head of Business Leadership South Africa are also there.</p>
<p>&#8220;Eskom is teetering on the brink.The delegation wants to talk to its investors in Davos to try to persuade them not to pull their money out so the government has time to fix it,&#8221; says one South African insider on the road to Davos.</p>
		
				
		
<p>Ramaphosa will also be looking to convince investors, amid the snowflakes, that South Africa is open for business and that he is serious about cleaning up corruption. In a pre-Davos breakfast in Johannesburg on Thursday he said he wanted the National Prosecuting Authority to move faster in tackling cases. He applauded the freezing of assets of people under question, like the Gupta family, but wanted more.</p>
<p>&#8220;We want people doing wrong things to be dealt with,&#8221; Ramaphosa said.</p>
<p>One of the highlights of the week will be the visit of Donald Trump who is expected to fly in on Friday. It is likely to add spice to the gathering as Trump has long dismissed the well meaning economic globalists of Davos.</p>

<p>African delegates could also ponder giving Trump a cold welcome to a cold Swiss mountain side in response to the <a href="http://cnbc.africa/news/political/2018/01/13/africa-response-to-shithole/">US president&#8217;s recent disparaging remarks about Africa</a>.</p>
<p>&#8220;Many of us will be boycotting your address to delegates at Davos in protest against your divisive comments and continued failure to unequivocally apologise,&#8221;wrote Mohale angrily in the South African newspapers.</p>
<p>Many other members of the African delegations are likely to agree, but are equally unlikely to prise an apology out of Trump. .</p>

<p>In a bid to clear its image from being perceived as the enemy of government, Business Leadership South Africa released a Quantec Report today telling of businesses contribution to South Africa.</p>


BLSA’s Mohale answers Zuma’s question, what is state capture?

<p>Business is the most significant direct contributor to the South African economy. These were among the findings in a report by Quantec Research, a South African economic consultancy, commissioned by Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA).</p>

<p>Other findings include:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Business is the most significant direct contributor to the South African economy</strong>. The direct output created* by BLSA members** alone was R1.9 trillion in 2016. That’s 1.2 times the value of total budgeted expenditure by government in 2016 and even that only represents a portion of the total impact of business.</li>
<li><strong>Big business support small enterprises in the supply chain</strong>. Nearly R1 trillion, or 66.7% of BLSA member expenditure was paid to suppliers, enabling them to employ people, pay taxes, purchase supplies and make investments. BLSA collectively received 34.4 points out of 40 for black enterprise development as prescribed by BEE Codes.</li>
<li><strong>Business employs 6.9 times the number of public sector employees. </strong>BLSA members themselves employ 1.29 million people, with another 1.97 million jobs supported in the supply chain. 596,719 people are dependent on BLSA employees. The 57 member companies in the study contribute 23.5% of total private sector employment, and pay full-time and part-time employees just under R2 trillion. A further R8.7 billion was devoted to training and skills development for BLSA’s employees.</li>
<li><strong>Business contributes to the public sector and supports the most important institutions of state through taxation.</strong> Taxation to government from BLSA members alone amounted to over R431 billion in 2016, 35.9% of total taxes collected. That’s the equivalent of more than one million teacher’s salaries, or almost two million police officers, or almost 1.5 million low-cost housing units.</li>
<li><strong>The direct positive impact of business on the economy and the lives of South Africans is significant, but the knock-on effects are often even greater.</strong> For every 1 rand of economic activity that BLSA members generate directly, a further 64c is added to the country’s GDP with an economy-wide impact of R2.59. And for every 100 people that were directly employed by BLSA members, another 153 indirect job opportunities were supported.</li>
<li><strong>Business is a key contributor to South Africa’s GDP. </strong>BLSA members contributed roughly 36% of the total South African domestic economy’s output in 2016, compared to government’s 11.7%, while contributing 34% of the country’s GDP.</li>
</ul>
<p>Bonang Mohale, Chief Executive of BLSA, says the report &#8220;confirms that business is a vibrant part of South African economy and society and a significant national asset. The footprint of BLSA’s members alone is notable – often bigger than that of Government itself. It’s a reminder that business touches every part of South African life and has a positive role and voice to play in the success of the nation.”</p>
<p>He added: “Despite its already outsized contribution, Business is committed to doing more to encourage inclusive economic growth and transformation. That is why earlier this year we launched our #Business Believes campaign where business made various commitments to society. Government must create the economic and policy conditions necessary for growth to occur, and then together business, government and civil society can work to put the South African economy back on track.”</p>
