The Afrimat Construction Index for the first quarter of 2020 has shown significantly depressed figures with the index itself falling by more than 27 per cent. Roelof Botha, Economist and Head of the Afrimat Construction Index, urges that these figures prove how important the recovery plan is for the construction sector.
South Africa’s construction sector is under pressure after declining by 2.9 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2019, this is according to the Afrimat Construction Index. However economist Dr Roelof Botha remains optimistic about an increase in construction activity in 2020 due to the commitments that have been set out in the State of the Nation address and budget commitments for infrastructure development. The Afrimat Construction Index for the third quarter of 2019 showed an increase of 5.1 per cent quarter on quarter, with the belief that there is still some life in the construction sector due to improved levels of activity since the first quarter. The Afrimat Construction Index for the second quarter of 2019 has reflected the same performance of the GDP for the second quarter, with an increase of 3.1 per cent. Although the industry saw a slight increase in activity it is still however behind on growth compared to the same period last year. The Afrimat Construction Index for the first quarter of 2019 has indicated the same trend as the bleak overall economic activity. However, on a positive note the first quarter ACI levels did increase on a year-on-year basis .According to Economist, Roelof Botha the issues with the activity in the construction sector has been the MPC refusing to implement an accommodating policy stance , the uncertainty of land expropriation without compensation and the run up to national elections . The Afrimat Construction Index for the 4th quarter of 2018 has been compiled by economist Dr Roelof Botha .The index has indicated that the Gross Domestic Product has increased by a mere 1.1 percent during the fourth quarter of 2018 , and the value added by the construction sector declined by the same margin.
