Mondia Pay expands new fintech opportunities to increase access to digital entertainment for Vodacom Tanzania customers

A cross-border data collaboration project involving 23 African countries above the Equator is proving to be a game-changer for the tracking and management of COVID-19 and other epidemic-prone diseases in the region &#8211; and is launching the first ever daily public COVID dashboard for countries in the Horn of Africa next month.

The USAID-funded Regional Action Through Data (RAD) programme is tackling COVID-19 in West and East Africa through two initiatives, respectively involving the sharing of real-time regional disease data online and tech-enabled cross-border immunisations. These initiatives are enabling governments to better collaborate to protect their roving pastoral populations from epidemics and to overcome the data issues of the Ebola era.
Game-changing COVID-19 dashboards enable daily regional epidemic tracking 
Ebola became a deadly disaster six years ago due to inadequate and irregular, at best weekly, information sharing among affected countries. But this scenario will soon be a thing of the past, with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) (https://bit.ly/3bT4wvX) trade bloc in Central and East Africa getting its own daily online disease outbreak dashboard (https://bit.ly/3fCWZ5C) before the end of June 2021. Currently the tracker shows monthly graphs, but soon new daily regional information will be available as well. The dashboard allows its eight member countries in the Horn of Africa, Nile Valley and African Great Lakes regions to share epidemic data on a daily basis for the first time.
The IGAD dashboard follows on RAD’s recently unveiled “disease outbreak dashboard” for the West African Health Organization (WAHO) (https://bit.ly/3bTNFcr). The WAHO COVID-19 Dashboard (https://bit.ly/3um5maW) is freely available on the WAHO website and offers information, maps and tables to reflect how COVID is manifesting daily in the region. It will soon also track other epidemic-prone diseases. WAHO is the health arm of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and serves 15 countries including Ghana, Nigeria and Mali.
The RAD programme was launched in 2016 in response to the Ebola pandemic to identify and co-create actionable solutions for pressing African health needs and pivoted to deal with COVID last year. It is a USAID collaboration with both WAHO and IGAD, with implementation led by BroadReach Health Development.
Implementation partner BroadReach’s health-tech experts are providing prime oversight and support, in collaboration with Duke University and Jembi Health Systems NPC, who provide policy and technical support.
“These publicly accessible online dashboards are an absolute game-changer for all partnering countries, especially in jointly managing the health of migratory populations in real-time,” says Geoffrey Arunga, Regional Analyst for the RAD project in BroadReach, who manages the data functionality of the dashboards. 
Dr. Andrew Kitua, BroadReach’s Regional Programme Director of RAD, who manages the implementation of the programme, says: “The emergence of COVID-19 has again highlighted how diseases can emerge from anywhere and spread rapidly across continents in this globalised era, but now through our RAD work we are able to use real-time data sharing to empower health authorities to respond immediately to outbreaks &#8211; outbreaks that have no respect for borders.”
“This kind of data-sharing could future-proof Africa against the next pandemic, by driving the supply of data, sharing and policy, and managing actual demand for health products and production,” said Kitua. It also motivates health workers who can now see the fruits of their labour and “helps defeat COVID denialism” in political leaders who are now confronted with robust regional data.
Ground-breaking cross-border childhood immunisation programme
IGAD which comprises Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda, has also launched a ground-breaking cross-border childhood immunisation programme, called the “Journey Solution”, which uses credit card technology to ensure that nomadic populations stay on track with essential childhood vaccinations across borders.
The Journey Solution gives parents custodianship of their children’s electronic health data through electronic immunisation cards that health workers can swipe to see the child’s immunisation history, which is also stored in the Cloud.
“This card technology helps us run ahead of diseases. It can follow in the footsteps of the yellow cards issued for citizens of countries with a high prevalence of Yellow Fever, and can be the forerunner to a type of COVID passport for the region that will become necessary once immunisations become the norm and require tracking,” says Arunga.
The RAD project wraps up in September 2021, but was designed to enable governments, regions and their health partners to sustainably continue tracking and managing epidemic-prone diseases into the future.

Public-private data project a COVID game-changer in West and East Africa

This month, Botswana became the first country in Southern Africa, and the third in Africa, to pilot drone technology for health-care delivery. The Drones for Health pilot project aims to reduce preventable maternal deaths by delivering maternal health supplies and commodities – including essential obstetric care drugs, blood, blood products and laboratory specimens – particularly in hard-to-reach communities and health facilities.

UNFPA is partnering on the initiative, along with Botswana’s Ministry of Health and Wellness, the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology, and Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST).
“Women experience massive blood loss due to haemorrhage during childbirth, with many of them requiring a blood transfusion,” said Beatrice Mutali, the UNFPA country director in Botswana, at the launch of the initiative. “Blood and blood-based products are therefore critical.”
Life-saving medicines
Botswana has a maternal mortality ratio that is almost double the average for upper-middle income countries – 144 per 100,000 live births according to 2017 UN data, or at 166 deaths per 100,000 live births according to 2019 government data. The main causes of maternal deaths in Botswana are postpartum haemorrhage, complications after abortion and hypertensive disorders during pregnancy.
To provide life-saving emergency obstetric care, health facilities must be equipped with the supplies and skills needed to handle such emergencies. Medication can effectively treat post-partum haemorrhageand hypertensive issues like eclampsia, for instance, but in this large and sparsely populated country, delivery of such medical supplies is often a challenge.
“The need to invest in innovative options to bridge the long distances, reduce current transportation costs, overcome road infrastructure challenges, and improve timely availability of essential emergency obstetric care drugs, commodities and supplies is therefore urgent,” said Dr. Edwin Gorataone Dikoloti, Botswana’s Minister of Health and Wellness.
“The sustainable reduction of maternal, newborn and child deaths and overall improvement of health care in general, including sexual, reproductive and adolescent health, remains a high priority for the Government of Botswana,” said Dr. Dikoloti.
Slashing delivery times
The use of drones to deliver essential medical supplies is expected to reduce the delivery time from hours to minutes, meaning that obstetric emergency supplies could arrive in time to save lives, according to BIUST Vice Chancellor, Professor Otlogetswe Totolo.
Each battery-powered drone has a delivery distance of 100 km and can carry cargo with a weight of up to 2kg at a time.
Four villages were involved in the pilot project: Lecheng, 32 km from Palapye by road and 11 km via drone; Mokgware, with a distance of 55 km by road and 32 km by drone; Mogapi, 108 km away by road and 75 km via drone; and Moremi, 75 km away by road and 36 km via drone.
Community members in the pilot areas have supported the project by building landing pads at designated health posts. UNFPA provided seed funding for the project. Successful test runs have been carried out in all four targeted villages, with the drones delivering dummy specimens.
Transforming health care
The Drones for Health initiative, which was conceived in 2018, is being implemented in three phases. Phases I and II are dedicated to proof-of-concept and viability testing.
Following a successful rollout, Phase III will involve the development of the business model, identify sustainable partnerships, and the scale up and transfer of innovation solutions to the Ministry of Wellness and Health.
“Technology and digitally driven solutions have the potential to transform health care, particularly for women and girls in underserved communities, often left behind due to geographical proximity…as they live in hard-to-reach areas,” said Ms. Mutali.

(Reuters) &#8211; The S&amp;P 500 rose on Friday, extending a six-day rally led by technology stocks as the prospect of super-low interest rates for a prolonged period and bets on a medical solution to the COVID-19 pandemic spurred risk appetite.

The tech sector’s 0.7% rise provided the biggest boost to the benchmark index. Energy stocks advanced 0.6% as hurricane Laura passed the heart of the U.S. oil industry in Louisiana and Texas without causing any widespread damage to refineries.



The Federal Reserve on Thursday unveiled a plan to support inflation and restore the U.S. economy from its biggest downturn since the Great Depression.



Data on Friday showed U.S. consumer spending increased more than expected in July, though momentum is likely to ebb as the COVID-19 pandemic lingers and fiscal stimulus dries up with no sight of the next round of coronavirus relief package.

“There’s no question consumer spending is going to be under some stress until we get additional fiscal support,” said Albert Brenner, director of asset allocation strategy at People’s United Advisors in Bridgeport, Connecticut.



The S&amp;P 500 and the Nasdaq have scaled record highs and the benchmark is on track for its best August in 34 years, partly powered by a rally in technology stocks, while the blue-chip Dow traded above the break-even level for 2020.



“We’d like to see a sort of a broadening of (stocks in the rally); that would indicate to us some greater confidence of market participants in the economic recovery,” Brenner said.



Progress in the race to develop treatments and vaccines for COVID-19 have also added to the cheer. Johnson &amp; Johnson’s Janssen unit said it would expand testing for its experimental coronavirus vaccine to Spain, the Netherlands and Germany next week.



Meanwhile, the U.S. election campaign entered its final stretch with U.S. President Donald Trump’s Republican nomination for a second term. Analysts expect market volatility to increase again ahead of voting in November.



At 9:57 a.m. ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 77.58 points, or 0.27%, at 28,569.85, the S&amp;P 500 was up 8.77 points, or 0.25%, at 3,493.32. The Nasdaq Composite was up 63.60 points, or 0.55%, at 11,688.94.



United Airlines rose 1.9% as it prepared for the biggest pilot furloughs of its history, a day after announcing the need to cut 21% jobs this year.



Coca-Cola Co gained 0.8% as it announced plans to nearly halve its operating units and offer voluntary separation to 4,000 workers.



In the latest sign that technology companies are booming in the pandemic, business software provider Workday Inc jumped 13.2% after raising its annual subscription forecast and Dell Technologies Inc gained 6.9% after reporting a quarterly profit beat.



Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 2.19-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and by a 1.65-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq.



The S&amp;P index recorded 12 new 52-week highs and no new low, while the Nasdaq recorded 43 new highs and nine new lows.

Tech stocks extend S&P 500’s rally to seventh straight session

There is no shortage of technological innovations designed to boost animal agriculture in Africa. These range from&nbsp;<a href="https://cgspace.cgiar.org/handle/10568/57322">GPS tracking systems</a>&nbsp;which identify and trace pastoralists’ herds to livestock vaccine&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cowtribe.com/">SMS services</a>&nbsp;that alert farmers to disease outbreaks.



But to unlock the economic potential of the sector as&nbsp;<a href="http://www.fao.org/3/a-i3706e.pdf">demand for meat and milk</a>&nbsp;swells threefold towards 2050, countries must invest in the critical areas that will improve quality across the whole value chain. That is increasing productivity and quality from the breeding of the animal throughout the production process to the end product. This includes safe storage, handling and sale.



My native Uganda offers some useful lessons from its use of smart investments in technology and farmer organisation. These have made it the only East African country that is&nbsp;<a href="http://pure.au.dk/portal/files/71178513/mwebaze_and_kjaer_article.pdf">self-sufficient in milk</a>.



In recent years, some private sector players in Uganda have invested in testing systems to detect aflatoxin in animal feeds. The goal is to prevent milk and meat contamination. Others have developed refrigeration units that are powered with&nbsp;<a href="https://energypedia.info/wiki/Biogas-Powered_Evaporative_Cooling_for_Uganda%E2%80%99s_Dairy_Industry">biogas</a>&nbsp;from manure. Both are among the innovations that improve the quality of the final product.



As highlighted by a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mamopanel.org/resources/reports-and-briefings/meat-milk-more-policy-innovations-shepherd-inclusi/">new report</a>&nbsp;from the Malabo Montpellier Panel on which I sit, the same can be achieved elsewhere. It can also benefit other livestock commodities, to give Africa food sovereignty across animal-sourced foods and greater access to international markets.



The report makes 11 recommendations for Africa’s livestock sector. These range from technological innovations and supportive policies to addressing trade barriers and challenges specific to each commodity.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Priority areas</h2>



African nations must be strategic in prioritising the infrastructure that will make the most difference to quality and productivity. The first priority is to increase consumer awareness around food safety, nutrition and sustainability to kickstart demand for better quality products.



Partly as a response to European consumer expectations around quality and safety, for example, Morocco developed a new system for&nbsp;<a href="http://www.onssa.gov.ma/fr/sante-animale/identification-animale">animal identification and traceability</a>&nbsp;in 2015.



Livestock can be identified using electronic tags that communicate with the national database via mobile phone networks. This increases transparency and traceability. It also promotes Moroccan animal products on international markets such as the European Union.



The second priority is then to direct technology towards opportunities to open up market access.



To unlock trade means investing in improved animal health, processing operations, storage and distribution. Meeting regional and international standards for food safety and quality is a vital goal. Africa currently contributes 2.8% of the global meat market, which translates to 14 million tons. The continent produces just over 10% of the world’s milk.



There are a number of barriers to increasing this production and gaining greater market share. They include limited availability of quality animal feed, access to affordable energy needed in producing and processing livestock, and limited infrastructure, particularly in the last mile.



With meat and milk being perishable goods, innovation in the cold chain and sustainable energy supplies will help strengthen the sector.



For example, an East African&nbsp;<a href="https://www.heifer.org/our-work/flagship-projects/east-africa-dairy-development-project.html">initiative</a>&nbsp;which centralised milk quality testing and storage in chillers prior to sale increased yields sixfold within five years.



The volume of milk supplied to the 30km catchment area rose to three million litres a month. This increased income per smallholder household by more than 160% in Uganda, 120% in Kenya, and almost 65% in Rwanda.



The success of such projects in turn drives demand for continued innovation, such as solar-powered cold chains or interventions that protect other resources like water and grasslands.



Finally, countries also need to prioritise policies that support new technologies across the livestock sector.



To&nbsp;<a href="https://www.dda.or.ug/profile.html">transform</a>&nbsp;its milk production sector, Uganda privatised the state-owned processing company Dairy Corporation as well as creating a Dairy Development Authority.



The Dairy Industry Act of 1998 empowered the authority to enforce milk hygiene standards and quality controls. As a result, traders were licensed to meet public health and milk quality standards. This encouraged the modernisation of the sector through the expansion of pasteurisation plants and processing infrastructure as well as processing of high value products.



Certainly, the gains have trickled down to the farmers in better farm gate prices.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Conclusion</h2>



As the Malabo Montpellier Panel points out, many of the tools needed to tap into the potential of Africa’s livestock sector exist already. But with limited resources, they must be deployed smartly to improve the entire value chain.



Scaling up innovation at critical points will unlock new opportunities and help ensure animal agriculture keeps pace with a rising demand from a growing population.

Consumer demands for a frictionless, personalised experience which caters for their lifestyle needs are set to drive online retail trends in 2020.&nbsp; The result is a focus on creating a customised experience that supports and enhances shopping in the virtual environment, facilitating the buying journey.



Derek Cikes, Commercial Director at payment fintech Payflex,
shares the top 8 online retail trends for the year ahead.



<ol><li>Omnichannel retailing</li></ol>



As shoppers expand their touchpoints with a brand, the online and bricks-and-mortar channels will increasingly merge into a seamless omnichannel experience within the brand ecosystem.&nbsp; In order to facilitate this, merchants need to provide shoppers with an integrated shopping experience across all channels that allows shoppers to browse, shop and return items across in-store and online channels. 



 2. Pop-up Shops



2020 will see pop-up shops expanding beyond
brand awareness to provide shoppers with a curated shopping
experience.&nbsp;&nbsp; Leveraging the scarcity and exclusivity principles
associated with these temporary storefronts, shoppers will have access to novel
or limited brand items.&nbsp; Brands in turn will have the opportunity to
engage one-on-one with their customers while collecting shopper data.



This intimate connection will also enable
pop-up stores to take on a new position of facilitating brand experiences
rather than only focussing on the commercial aspect of a retail pop-up store.



“By providing a compelling pop-up experience, brands are able to differentiate themselves and establish a unique relationship with their target market,” says Cikes.



 3. User experience



User experience will be optimised by levering online
channels. Simplicity is the key, enabling the user to effortlessly navigate the
website and find and acquire the desired items.



This includes reducing the number of
steps to complete a payment transaction such as the seamless single click
checkout process which can dramatically increase sales conversions.&nbsp; 



“Our experience has shown that the Payflex 1-click checkout process can reduce cart abandonment by a whopping 40% &#8211;&nbsp; a huge benefit for ecommerce merchants,” says Cikes.



 4. Online security



Concerns about online security and privacy are one of the key challenges to growing online sales in South Africa.&nbsp; To provide comfort to shoppers, 2020 will see a focus on creating a secure online infrastructure and being transparent about the use of data, so that shoppers feel comfortable sharing their financial information.&nbsp; 



 5. The customer journey



The year ahead will see online stores
optimizing the customer journey through each touchpoint with the brand.&nbsp;
This will translate into establishing a strong online communications infrastructure,
supporting customers through a variety of online and social media platforms
throughout their purchasing journey.



This optimizes the shopper’s online experience, allowing the next steps to follow naturally &#8211; increasing conversions, customer retention and eventually brand advocacy.



 6. Payment choices



Consumers are increasingly wary of incurring
debt to purchase lifestyle goods, which has opened the door to alterative
non-credit pay later solutions, such as Payflex.&nbsp;&nbsp; 



“Customers want more control of their spending, encouraging the online retail industry to incorporate payment experiences which meet their needs, such as the free spending solution from Payflex which can boost sales by 20-30%,” says Cikes.

The year ahead will leverage the
capabilities of artificial intelligence and machine learning to provide more
personalised shopping experiences.&nbsp; By using data and search history,
merchants can curate products and services specific to the shopper’s needs and
likes.&nbsp;&nbsp; This results in being able to customize each shopping
experience such as with sites like Amazon, where automatic suggestions are made
in addition to the purchase or music sites such as Spotify or Deeza which
leverage machine learning to provide a personal playlist based on a user’s data
and online search and listening history.

The
inter-relatedness of consumer demands and technological innovations creates one
of the central themes of online retail in 2020 – a symbiotic relationship
between shopper and technology.



“This will play out in new
avenues of innovation which meet consumer demands while leveraging technology
to create a meaningful online experience, moving shoppers further along the
customer journey to facilitate successful conversions,” concludes Cikes.

The 2010s kicked off a decade of uncertainty within the job market. Many sectors were still dealing with the aftermath of the Great Recession, the national&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bls.gov/opub/ted/2010/ted_20100217.htm" class="" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">unemployment rate</a>&nbsp;sat at 9.7%, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.epi.org/press/class_of_2010_faces_worst_job_market_in_a_generation_says_epi_report/" class="" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">class of 2010</a>&nbsp;graduated into the worst job market in a generation, and by the summer of 2010, more than a million job seekers&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/id/37554163" class="">quit looking for employment</a>.



However, now at the close of the decade, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/12/06/us-nonfarm-payrolls-november-2019.html" class="">job market has markedly improved</a>&nbsp;for most workers. That’s especially true for those in the technology space.



While developing tech has&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/12/05/map-the-us-cities-where-robots-are-impacting-jobs-the-most.html" class="">eliminated some job functions</a>, it’s also&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/11/27/high-paid-well-educated-white-collar-jobs-heavily-affected-by-ai-new-report.html" class="">redefined</a>&nbsp;and created completely new roles in the past 10 years — many that pay well, thanks in part to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/11/06/how-switching-careers-to-tech-could-solve-the-us-talent-shortage.html" class="">a short supply of workers</a>&nbsp;with the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/11/19/these-will-be-the-top-10-most-popular-tech-skills-of-2020.html" class="">right skill sets</a>&nbsp;to fill emerging jobs that are crucial to keeping businesses competitive.



<a class="" href="https://www.cnbc.com/make-it/">CNBC Make It</a> spoke with Glassdoor senior economic research analyst Amanda Stansell about the jobs that barely existed at the turn of the decade, but that have exploded in growth and median base pay through the 2010s.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Data scientist: $107,697 per year</h2>



In 2012, Harvard Business Review named data scientist&nbsp;<a href="https://hbr.org/2012/10/data-scientist-the-sexiest-job-of-the-21st-century" class="" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">“the sexiest job of the 21st century</a>.” And for the past four years, Glassdoor has recognized it as the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/01/22/glassdoor-the-20-best-jobs-in-america-in-2019.html" class="">No. 1 job in the U.S.</a>&nbsp;based on job satisfaction, pay and opportunities.



Stansell says demand for data scientists is still most concentrated within the tech industry, but that it’s growing across every sector: health care, finance, business, retail, media and beyond.



“All these companies have a need for a data scientist who can make use of the growing amount of data they have and turn it into something valuable,” Stansell says.



While the term “data science” was first coined as an independent discipline (separate from traditional statistics) in 2001 by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.stat.purdue.edu/~wsc/" class="" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">William S. Cleveland</a>, jobs in data science have grown most rapidly since 2010. That’s because as more companies are investing in technology to collect user data, the need for professionals to interpret said data has skyrocketed.



Because it’s still a relatively new field, many of today’s data scientists have varied backgrounds in computer science, math, statistics and engineering. However, <a class="" rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.insidehighered.com/digital-learning/article/2017/03/15/data-analytics-programs-taking-colleges" target="_blank">more universities</a> have begun offering specific degrees, courses and even bootcamps in data science within the past decade.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Information security engineer: $100,553 per year</h2>



Since 2010, data breaches have&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/12/23/the-10-biggest-data-hacks-of-the-decade.html" class="">compromised over 38 billion accounts,</a>&nbsp;according to the cybersecurity firm Risk Based Security.



These breaches, and the need to protect user data, has resulted in information security being one of the fastest-growing fields. Information security engineers work to safeguard an organization’s computer network systems, and plan and carry out security measures to protect sensitive information from infiltration and cyber attacks.



“As there have been more and more high-profile data breaches in recent years, this has translated to companies seeing the need for having people who can help them protect their data,” Stansell says.



The field is projected to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bls.gov/ooh/computer-and-information-technology/information-security-analysts.htm" class="" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">grow by 32% through 2028</a>, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. (The average growth rate for all occupations is 5%.)



However, the need for information security engineers has far eclipsed the number of people with the skills to do the job. The U.S. Department of Commerce&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/08/09/cybersecurity-jobs-non-technical-workers.html" class="">recently estimated</a>&nbsp;there are 350,000 unfilled cybersecurity jobs in the country. Cybersecurity Ventures, an analytics and research company, estimates 3.5 million jobs in cybersecurity around the world are likely to go unfilled by 2021.



This talent shortage means workers in the field are paid handsomely. While Glassdoor data says information security engineers earn a median base salary of just over $100,000 per year, top-level jobs in the field, like chief information security officer, can yield <a class="" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/08/09/cybersecurity-jobs-non-technical-workers.html">pay above $300,000 in top metro areas</a>, according to cybersecurity recruiting firm SilverBull.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Director of diversity and inclusion: $98,154 per year</h2>



The only top-paying emerging job of the decade that doesn’t fall into the tech space is one that focuses on workplace culture, particularly within diversity and inclusion. The position of D&amp;I director is so new, Glassdoor doesn’t have adequate pay data for the specific role, but uses Human Resources Director salaries with an average pay of $98,154 per year as a guide.



According to a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.glassdoor.com/about-us/diversity-inclusion-2019/" class="" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">2019 Glassdoor survey</a>, 61% of U.S. employees have witnessed or experienced discrimination in the workplace based on age, race, gender or LGBTQ identity. Meanwhile, the career site saw a 30% increase in the past year of diversity and inclusion job openings, such as D&amp;I director, program manager, diversity recruiter and D&amp;I consultant.



“This signals that these are issues employees are facing, and employers are catching up and trying to make an impact in this field,” Stansell says, “which is really an encouraging sign that employers are making the investment towards an inclusive workplace.”



Larger companies with 5,000 or more employees are the ones making the biggest investment in growing their D&amp;I departments, likely because they have the financial resources to do so.



Stansell predicts progress in these types of roles will continue into the next decade. According to a&nbsp;<a href="https://www2.deloitte.com/us/en/pages/about-deloitte/articles/press-releases/inclusion-survey.html" class="" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">2017 survey from Deloitte</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2017/07/26/75-percent-of-execs-would-leave-their-company-for-one-that-values-diversity.html" class="">72% of employees</a>&nbsp;said they would consider leaving their company to join another with better diversity initiatives and programs.



“In the next few years, we’ll continue to see medium-sized companies invest in diversity and inclusion, especially as it is such an important thing to job seekers,” Stansell says.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Sales engineer: $90,000 per year</h2>



Sales engineers work for tech companies to sell customized software and products to other businesses looking to expand their IT efforts.



“As tech companies are offering really high-value products to potential customers, they need to have the ability to adapt to each individual [client],” Stansell says. “Having a sales engineer, who is a communicator between the sales and engineering aspects, is really important make sure that the needs of the potential customer are met.”



Because workers must have extensive knowledge of these products and understand the scientific processes behind their operations, sales engineers tend to have technical backgrounds (for example, a degree in computer science or engineering). However, Stansell adds they also need solid interpersonal skills such as communication, negotiation and marketing know-how in order to provide customized solutions to clients during the sales process.



Those with a marketing background may also be able to learn more about tech products and software in order to transition into this type of role.



While Glassdoor puts the annual median salary of a sales engineer at $90,000 per year, pay can vary based on what they’re selling. For example, the <a class="" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/04/23/glassdoor-the-7-highest-paying-sales-jobs-in-the-us.html">Bureau of Labor Statistics says</a> those operating in the telecommunications industry tend to earn the most, about <a class="" rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.bls.gov/ooh/sales/sales-engineers.htm#tab-5" target="_blank">$118,000 a year</a>, followed by sales engineers in computer systems design and wholesale electronic markets, who also command six-figure salaries.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Salesforce developer: $80,357 per year</h2>



While Salesforce, the cloud-based software company that specializes in customer relationship management, was founded in 1999, its influence in U.S. workplaces expanded vastly in the past 10 years, so much so that the role of Salesforce developer became a sought-after position at companies such as&nbsp;<a href="https://www.glassdoor.com/Job/jobs.htm?sc.keyword=salesforce%20developer&amp;amp;locT=&amp;amp;locId=0&amp;amp;locKeyword=&amp;amp;jobType=all&amp;amp;fromAge=-1&amp;amp;minSalary=0&amp;amp;includeNoSalaryJobs=true&amp;amp;radius=25&amp;amp;cityId=-1&amp;amp;minRating=0.0&amp;amp;industryId=-1&amp;amp;sgocId=-1&amp;amp;seniorityType=all&amp;amp;companyId=-1&amp;amp;employerSizes=5&amp;amp;applicationType=0&amp;amp;remoteWorkType=0" class="" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Google, Amazon, PwC and Uber</a>.



As a Salesforce developer, workers use the Salesforce platform or cloud technology to code software or application solutions for their company to better connect with customers, partners and potential customers.



“It’s a job completely born out of successful technology product that’s changed the ways companies function and organize data,” Stansell says.



Developers generally have a background in computer science and may&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/11/19/these-will-be-the-top-10-most-popular-tech-skills-of-2020.html" class="">pursue certification</a>&nbsp;in specific&nbsp;<a href="https://trailhead.salesforce.com/credentials/developeroverview" class="" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Salesforce applications</a>&nbsp;or processes. That said, these developers also need&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/11/21/10-top-soft-skills-to-master-for-2020-if-you-want-a-raise-promotion-or-new-job.html" class="">soft skills</a>, such as communication, in order to interpret data and workflows for a non-technical audience.



“I think we’ll continue to see this trend in the future with really successful tech products,” Stansell says, adding, “people who are able to learn those skills and apply them for different companies can have really great career paths.”

 entrepreneur/founder aged 29 or younger on 31 March 2020</li><li>Should have a legitimate
 REGISTERED business on the continent</li><li>Business/businesses
 should be two years or older</li><li>Nominees must have risked
 own money and have a social impact</li><li>Must be profit generating</li><li>Must employ people in
 Africa</li><li>All applications must be
 in English</li><li>Should be available and
 prepared to participate in the Under 30 Meet-Up</li></ol>



Sports
category



<ol><li>Must be a sports person
 aged 29 or younger on 31 March 2020</li><li>Must be representing an
 African team</li><li>Should have a proven
 track record of no less than two years</li><li>Should be making
 significant earnings</li><li>Should have some
 endorsement deals</li><li>Entrepreneurship and
 social impact is a plus</li><li>All applications must be
 in English</li><li>Should be available and
 prepared to participate in the Under 30 Meet-Up</li></ol>



Creatives
category



<ol><li>Must be a creative aged 29
 or younger on 31 March 2020</li><li>Must be from or based in
 Africa</li><li>Should be making significant
 earnings</li><li>Should have a proven
 creative record of no less than two years</li><li>Must have social
 influence</li><li>Entrepreneurship and
 social impact is a plus</li><li>All applications must be
