For the first time in the near 170-year history of World Expos, all countries in Africa will participate at Expo 202o Dubai, set to unfold as the planet’s biggest show, for six months from October 20 this year.

For the first time, the African Union (AU) will also host a pavilion at the expo, to increase the decibel on the continent’s policies for potential and progress to millions of visitors expected to descend from around the world to the glistening city of Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).&nbsp;&nbsp;



To strengthen the almost 50-year partnership with Africa, recently, a UAE Consortium for Africa was launched, with the UAE committing to invest $500 million– in a consolidation of government and private resources– into the continent. A primary focus of the consortium will be digitization and developing the youth on the continent.



Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, the&nbsp;UAE’s Minister for International Cooperation and Director General, Expo 2020 Dubai Bureau,&nbsp;elaborates on taking the Africa partnership to the next level.



&nbsp;“The expo will further catalyze the relationship with Africa developed over the last few decades. Last year, we had 24 heads of government from the African continent in the UAE. The continent sees us as a partner,” she says in an interview with FORBES AFRICA.



Minister Al Hashimy, who has also been a regular attendee at the AU summit in Ethiopia for several years now, says the UAE&nbsp;recognizes that the real value lies in the long-term building of human capital, which is&nbsp;plans to deepen trade ties with South Africa and the rest of the continent.



“Now – at the start of the third decade of the millennium – we need to step it up and help underpin Africa’s potential<a href="https://www.cnbcafrica.com/news/2020/02/16/powering-africas-bright-future-how-digitising-a-continents-youth-will-drive-global-progress/"> through its people</a>, because how Africa develops, how it ensures its stability, builds on its successes and overcomes its challenges, will have enormous implications, not just for the continent itself, but for every country on the planet.”



Expo 2020, themed ‘Connecting Minds, Creating The Future’, is expected to bring together 192 participating nations to Dubai.



The AU will&nbsp;focus its participation on the expo’s sub-theme, ‘Opportunity’, aiming&nbsp;to utilize the platform to tell the African story and position the continent for hosting a World Expo in the future.

Applications Open for FORBES AFRICA 30 Under 30 class of 2020

The leading business talk show on the number one business magazine platform, Forbes Africa My Worst Day with Peace Hyde, is set to launch its third instalment and this time, the program has a lineup of powerhouse business tycoons from the global business world. The show which is renowned for interviewing the African continent&#8217;s billionaires and millionaires on their most challenging day ever in business has raised the bar by venturing into global business world to assemble a league of some of the richest and most successful African American moguls.

Forbes Africa Under 30 opens nominations for 2019

From November 7-9, Africa Inc. will convene in South Africa’s Gauteng Province, the continent’s seventh largest economy, for the inaugural Africa Investment Forum (AIF).
An initiative of the African Development Bank (AfDB), it was announced in May in Johannesburg by AfDB President Akinwumi Adesina with Gauteng premier David Makhura.
“It will be the continent’s first-ever investment market place,” said Adesina, formerly Nigeria’s minister of agriculture.
“South Africa is open for business again, and as Gauteng, we are ready to host the forum on behalf of not only South Africa, but for Africa,” said Makhura, calling the forum “the Davos of Africa”.
A platform to close the investment gap, Adesina called it a game-changing initiative.

“It cannot be business as usual, it must be business unusual,” he said.
With Africa’s population set to be two billion by 2050, its development needs will require an estimated $600-$700 billion per annum. So accelerated development will be the forum’s focus.
“The forum will be 100% transactional. There will be no political speeches. The only thing allowed will be transactions, transactions and transactions,” said Adesina. In attendance in November will also be African heads of state who will be present as the CEOs of their countries.
In a sit-down interview with FORBES AFRICA, the AfDB president shared more about new investments, and the bread baskets and Silicon Valleys of Africa:
How will AIF take Afro-optimism and the African growth story further? 
African economies have been growing relatively well in a very difficult global environment. Despite the global economic downturn, in 2016, they grew at roughly 2.2%; in 2017, they grew at 3.6%. In 2018, they are projected to grow at 4.1%. And that’s still above the global average.
So Africa’s head is above the water. But it’s more than about keeping your head above the water that matters, it is about how fast you can swim. I think Africa needs to swim fast and needs a lot of oxygen to do that. And that means a lot of firepower in terms of capital to close the infrastructure gap. To be able to drive millions of people out of poverty, Africa should be growing at double digits.
To be able to do that we have to deal with the problem of lack of electricity, make sure there is a lot more investment to allow trade to happen. Africa could contribute a lot more be it is rail, ports, national highways or aviation. It has to change lives on the ground and quiet honestly when people ask if I am an Afro-optimist, I am a very proud African. Africa is a beautiful place and has tremendous potential so we shouldn’t always just talk about the potential because nobody eats potential. We have to unlock that potential. So that is what the Africa Investment Forum is all about. Be it oil, gas, minerals or agricultural commodities, Africa is awash with rich resources.
The question is how to turn them into real dividends with significant amounts of revenue that allows a better quality of life for the people. For that, you need to deal with the infrastructure deficit. We used to say it is about $15 billion. But that has changed. The AfDB recently released the African Economic Outlook report and the deficit is anywhere between $67 billion to $107 billion every year, so which means we must do a faster job pulling capital together because the rest of the world is not waiting.
How long will it take to close that gap? 
I think within the next decade. But it’s going to take a lot of work…
What about the youth dividend; what are the future industries? 
Africa is at the very top in fintech and mobile money… but as we look at new types of industries, we have to look at them in the context of the fourth industrial revolution… I get excited when I see the youth in Africa well-educated, they are all on social media, know how to use apps, which means they already have a leg up. So the key is how to re-tool them to operate in that kind of a new economy. The AfDB is doing that in three ways already. First is we signed up a joint program with Google and Microsoft to help develop young talented Africans in computer technology. We as a bank are already investing in technology parks in Cape Verde, Angola, Kenya, Senegal, Rwanda. These are technology parks where you can have the ICT industries emerge; almost like trying to create the Silicon Valleys of Africa.
When it comes to the new economy, you have to start early. We have a program trying to create 250 coding centers in Africa where you get people with computational knowledge to do coding services that can help in this new world we are moving towards. We are also investing in universities for science and technology across Africa to create this new scientific human capital…We need to give African youth the skills they need for the jobs of the future, not for the jobs of yesterday.
What then are the new wealth generators? 
If you look at where the money is going in Africa, it’s not actually going into oil, gas and natural resources. Most of the foreign direct investment (FDI) is going into the service industry, at least 64%, and also the financial services sector; maybe about 27% goes into the manufacturing sector. So these are the big sectors where you see a lot of FDI. But there are two sectors very important for me. 
One is ICT, because this is going to be the driver of the economy. It’s very important for countries to invest heavily in the ICT industry to give their countries the platforms they need in the knowledge economy.
The second is the food and agriculture industry. Africa has a lot of oil and gas, but nobody drinks oil, nobody smokes the gas. Food is the future. The size of the food and agriculture industry in Africa is going to be $1 trillion by 2030 in Africa. This is where the wealth is supposed to come from. Unfortunately, in Africa, we always walk past gold. Just imagine you are seeing gold, and you see it as dirt and don’t recognize it. That’s the power agriculture has… The food business is the biggest business. Agriculture is not a development sector, it’s not a social sector, it’s a wealth-creating sector. Agriculture is a business and Africa needs to fully unlock that potential. If you look at the amount of arable land left to feed nine billion people in the world by 2050, it is not in Europe, Latin America, Asia, or the US, it’s in Africa – 65% is right here. What Africa does with agriculture will determine the future of food for the world.
How will Africa’s billionaires and capitalists help achieve these goals? 
If you look at the high-networth-individuals in Africa, the majority of them make their money on this continent, and that’s already a strong signal. Aliko Dangote makes his money in Africa. 
So we are going to get them involved on the Africa Investment Forum because it is trying to send a message to the world that we have African businesses that are viable businesses making money and doing well on the continent; so putting capital to help them expand can help them become global multi-national companies…
And investing in African entrepreneurs? 
The issue for entrepreneurs is finding them, nurturing them and then putting the financial backing behind them to thrive. Africa has a lot of young people. Every day, I wake up I read about a young person doing so well. So the best investment that Africa can make is to put its capital at risk on behalf of its young people. Because when you see a young person walk into a financial institution, all you see is risk, risk, risk. We have to change that and try and see creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship. So that way we can put your money at risk to make them more creative, more innovative and unleash their entrepreneurship capacity. That is why at AfDB, we have a program helping to invest in the early-stage businesses of young people. Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates didn’t just get there, somebody had to believe in them.
We have a program set up with the European Union called Boost Africa to invest in young people. The other thing we are doing is helping unleash entrepreneurship in the food and agriculture industry. The bank has a program targeted at getting young graduates, medical doctors, engineers… who are all going to agriculture as a business. Last year, AfDB invested over $860 million in that program for about eight countries. Going forward, we expect to invest $1.5 billion dollars every year in that program for the next 10 years. 
I really think unless we change the mindset, the labor composition of the agricultural sector and create a new dynamic group of entrepreneurs in the food industry, we only will have old people left. Every university in Africa has to make entrepreneurship compulsory.

#AfricaInvestmentForum: A Marketplace Coming To Africa

Gautam Duggal is a man who has his work cut out for him – as the Regional Head of Wealth Management for Africa, the Middle East and Europe at Standard Chartered Bank it is his job to oversee strategy, business and product development for the bank across three territories. Residing in Dubai, the melting pot and commercial hub of the Middle East, Duggal also looks after advisory services offered by the bank for its investments, treasury and insurance products in the retail, private and business segments. This means he has to be exceptionally well versed in who his client base is and what their attitudes are towards investment.

Africa is home to some of the fastest growing economies in the world and the stats show how moneyed its populations are; high-net-worth individuals, according to the World Wealth Report, grew by 8.1% in Africa last year, with overall affluence increasing by 10.7% – faster than anywhere else in the world.
“We definitely see this trend continuing far beyond 2018. There is an entrepreneurial spirit sweeping the region. As we see technology permeate all areas of the economy, individuals are using this access to start new businesses and expand beyond city centers and geographies. It’s these entrepreneurs who are creating wealth for themselves and their families,” says Duggal.
The wealth needs of Africa’s diverse, growing middle class population, estimated at 300 million people, are intricate, with most countries being emerging economies and wealth being a relatively new notion for many. The African Lions report defines the continent’s middle class as “not in poverty” and having “disposable income and discretion”. The African middle class, says the report, also has a tertiary education that has been completed or is underway; they have money to fall back on in times of emergencies and access to a computer with email and internet.
“This particular growing middle class is looking for means to save for their first home, pay for their children’s education and set money aside for retirement. In many cases, they are the first ones in their families to attain surplus wealth, so often, there is a need to care for their aging parents or other relatives,” notes Duggal.
Saving early and doing so prudentially is key, however there is a need to dispel the sentiment that a considerable amount of cash is required to start investing. Many banks cater for basic savings plans that allow for a fixed amount to be put away each month. Standard Chartered, for example, offers a vehicle where money can be invested in a diversified portfolio of globally-recognised mutual funds. In South Africa, tax-free savings plans that are comprised of unit trusts and other investment vehicles intended to bolster savings are also gaining popularity, with the likes of Allan Gray and Old Mutual offering similarly structured products.

The best place for one to start creating wealth, Duggal tells us, is to become financially literate and to understand the options available as an investor. “Of course, every investor is unique and their investing is solely dependent on their individual client risk profile and personal preferences.”
On the trends in Africa, Standard Chartered sees real estate as a favored asset class for many with developers turning to mixed-use projects as a means to boost their bottom lines. There is also a marked increase in technology start-ups with the rise of mobile devises – an IDC report shows that the African smartphone market reached an estimated 95.37 million units in 2016; although feature phones still rank number one, homegrown manufacturers such as Mint Mobile in South Africa are coming to the fore with a ‘Made in Africa’ solution to meet local smartphone and tablet demand. And while asset classes invested in Africa’s natural resources and commodities are popular, a portion of their money can also be found in offshore investments.
From the bank’s perspective, diversification across both asset classes and geographies is vital to reducing overall risk, which is unique to the individual with investment power dependent on their existing risk profile as well as personal preference. But generating wealth substantial enough to be able to invest it is not without its challenges, which includes high inflation, illiquid markets, a lack of information and credible research data however, Duggal is confident the pros outweigh the cons.

“We are optimistic that many African economies will continue to grow in the long run amidst certain shocks here and there. There are challenges which need to be addressed but I would say there are far more opportunities than challenges,” he says.
<h3>MILLENNIAL MENTALITY</h3>
There is a growing consensus that the millennial generation currently has the greatest buying power – projections put this number at between 80-90 million in America alone and thus, millennials are at the core of the majority of industries today. Wealth management is no exception.
The millennial generation, in particular, has been exposed to significant global, social and economic change in relation to previous generations. Millennials are distinguished by their impatient nature and have different attitudes towards how to manage their assets. It is for this reason that Duggal believes that it is crucial to have a conversation with the bank’s younger private banking and investment clients to explain their investment profiling and look at how they can invest their money, saying that “a millennial investor has no issue with understanding the math behind a solution, yet, we lose them over a traditional paper and pencil explanation. Millennials want to understand how the advisor thinks and analyses through a screen and a dynamic tech solution. It is important to get them to see how the right kind of advisory platform can help them make an informed decision in terms of their investment.”
A key driving factor amongst millennials in their decision making is their need to change the world. According to EY, a millennial is twice as likely to invest their money in a company that is focused on social or environmental issues. This bodes well for sustainable investments, which currently represent 18% of assets under management in wealth and asset management classes.
“They need to know where their money is put, and they want to make sure that this it serves their purposes. This would require vast research and a restructuring of product offerings,” explains Duggal.
<h3>HOW DO THEY DO IT?</h3>
So what qualifies Standard Chartered to advise its clients on where to put their money?
“We have strong advisory capabilities and a specialist model, which makes us unique in the market. We also leverage on our local market knowledge. From within, Duggal believes in the importance of nurturing the bank’s young talent. Standard Chartered has programmes to invest in its talent across all levels of seniority – a leadership programme aimed at its senior managers and heads of business helps them grow within the business. Similar programmes are in place for junior employees with the objective of upskilling them, where they can travel on short-term assignments for up to a year to more established markets to help them to gain a better understanding of how these markets work.

Not many would have imagined that what happened in Zimbabwe this week would ever happen. President Robert Mugabe on Wednesday was placed under house arrest after 37 years in power. For the first time in years people inside Zanu-PF have openly expressed their views on the crisis in the country. Today the masses took to the streets to protest against Mugabe, the scenes below were shared by award winning Forbes Africa and Forbes Woman Africa Journalist Ancillar Mangena

Forbes Africa Editor Chris Bishop took a sneak preview of the new Hollywood blockbuster Dunkirk as it lands in the continent and emerged more than a little disappointed.
Sometimes art pales when it tries to imitate life and gritty human history. This was what I felt when I left the cinema after two hours of the slick new Hollywood effort Dunkirk.
This is one of the reasons why. When I was a young, aspiring, reporter on a small provincial weekly newspaper I had to carry out “district calls” every Monday morning; for the new generation of journalists this means travelling around actually talking to people to find out what is going on at street level. It was the best foundation for a career in journalism.  It was a lot more reliable than social media and frankly a lot more fun (Youngsters, don’t forget to look back at your phone and say : ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah’ at this juncture.).
I always looked forward to my first call of the day, at a small semi-detached house in Wilden Lane, the most. As my car drew up the florid face of Reg Abbotts would beam through the window. He was a town councillor and former mayor who used to like talking to journalists and was always full of stories. I can shut my eyes and hear his throaty laugh, country burr and eyes bright with mirth; I always liked Reg no matter what his political party was doing. He was man of substance and a man of the world even though he’d lived nowhere but his tiny village; war had made him a socialist.
I always wondered why he used to offer me a whiskey on a Monday morning before pouring a large one for himself; back then you didn’t say no to elders, so I accepted. In those days we also hadn’t heard about post-traumatic stress.
One day I noticed his war medals. He told me he was at Dunkirk &#8211; the French beach where British and French troops fled the advancing Germans in May 1940. It proved a miracle in anyone’s book. The British hoped to rescue about 30,000 troops; a brave operation that included scores of small ships from ferries to rickety pleasure boats to save more than 300,000 troops and arguably changed the course of the war.
Reg was a cavalry man in the Queen’s Own Worcestershire Hussars, a regiment that served in Africa in the Anglo-Boer War, one of the regiments of folklore where I grew up. There were no horses in World War Two and Reg told me, between sips of whiskey, he was in an anti-tank battery forming the rear guard against the advancing Germans to buy time for the troops to be picked off the beach at Dunkirk.
“Remember Dame Barbara Cartland the romantic novelist?” he asked between sips. Yes, I said.
“Her brother had his head blown off right next to me.”
Sure enough, years later I checked the history books and saw Major Ronald Cartland of the Hussars was indeed killed as Reg’s battery retreated rapidly after destroying 40 German tanks and buying hours of time. He told me of the retreat on foot though the chaos, the fear, the dive bombers, the confusion on the beach and the ugly scramble to get on the last boats. It was a vivid story full of drama and humour.
A leg wound meant Reg had to hop most of the way, in agony. When he arrived home in England he was on crutches. I will carry the stories to my grave.
This is one of the reasons I had been waiting to see Dunkirk and one of the many reasons I was disappointed.
For a start there were no names and little context in the film. Everyone seemed to flit across the screen like extras, with little depth or background to their characters.
I thought the film did capture the terror and the fear of the thunderbolts of violence from dive bombers and submarines. Thumbs up to the director for not using CGI, but I thought some of the big battle scenes looked a bit thin on action.
There was drama and tension in the escape through the bullets and bombs of the Germans, but I felt there were better stories that were overlooked. For instance, among the little boats to the rescue was a paddle steamer that made multiple trips under fire and rescued 7,000 troops. Another little boat was holed below the water line and only made it back to England because soldiers held a mattress against the breach.
On top of this there was another historical clanger in that the rescued troops were seen reading of the evacuation in the following morning’s papers which was the “fight them on the beaches” speech by Winston Churchill. It was delivered a month after Dunkirk.
Overall I thought it was an unworthy tribute to the ordinary men who risked life and limb at Dunkirk. As I write this I am wearing the regimental tie of the Queen’s Own Worcestershire Hussars in memory of the remarkable man-of-the-people that was Reg. I think it is a better tribute and he would have appreciated it. Cheers Reg.

Review: Hollywood blockbuster Dunkirk: A retreat from reality

Could it happen in this age of greed? A leading international musician pays his own way to travel thousands of miles to celebrate the independence of an African nation. He spends a night in a run-down hotel; smokes marijuana with farmers; survives teargas and writes a song that goes down in history. This was Bob Marley 35 years ago at the birth of Zimbabwe – an African story told by those who were there.
It all started with the impossible dream in Harare. Two Zimbabwean businessmen, nightclub owner, Job Kadengu and Gordon Muchanyuka, wanted a big name to serenade the new Zimbabwe at independence at midnight on April 17, 1980. Kadengu and Muchanyuka agreed Bob Marley was their man.
They flew to Kingston, Jamaica, to invite Marley, just weeks before independence day.
“Chris Blackwell, his manager at the time, was against this tour, but Marley, who had been following events in Zimbabwe, decided he would go. He hired a PA system in London and paid for his freight to Zimbabwe at his own expense,” says Fred Zindi, now a professor at the University of Zimbabwe, then, one of the Marley dreamers.
Marley had inspired Zimbabwe.
“During the years of Chimurenga (chiShona for uprising), Bob Marley’s music had been adopted by the guerrilla forces of the Patriotic Front; indeed, there were stories of ZANLA troops playing Marley cassettes in the bush. Certainly, Marley’s music has potency and a commitment which goes far beyond simple entertainment. He now enjoys a special place in Third World culture; an artist who directly identifies with the black African struggle. Thus, he was the only outside artist asked to participate in Zimbabwe’s independence celebrations,” says Zindi.
“His songs were the food that people in liberation movements, particularly the armed wings, were swallowing. From that point of view… to be able to see that music was an important aspect of the liberation of this continent. Bob Marley, like Amilcar Cabral (the first president of Angola), articulated so well the importance of the role of culture and music in the liberation struggle,” says Shadrack Gutto, a Unisa professor and constitutional law expert in South Africa, who was to teach law in Zimbabwe for 12 years.
So, it was set for a strange arrival at Salisbury Airport (now Harare International) on a Wednesday afternoon, on April 16. A bemused contingent of police in stiff green uniforms and peaked caps struggled to control a swarming crowd who came to see the arrival of the Jamaican dreadlocked band. The airport had not seen so many people for years as sanctions kept the world away.
“By the time the band arrived, a chartered Boeing 707 was on its way from London to Salisbury with 21 tons of equipment; a full 35,000-watt PA system plus backline equipment. It was one of the most extraordinary logistics operations. Mick Cater, from Alec Leslie Entertainment, flew down with the equipment and then set himself the problem of building a stage in time for the celebrations. By Wednesday, when the 12-strong road crew arrived in Zimbabwe, he had six hours in which to construct the stage and find sufficient power for the PA system,” says Zindi.
Marley and his crew spent the night, socializing with many former guerrilla fighters, at the run-down Skyline Hotel on the outskirts of Harare as foreign journalists had booked all the big hotels. The next day, Marley traveled to spend time with marijuana farmers in Mutoko, a town 143 kilometers outside Harare, where he sampled the herb.
In the last hours of Rhodesia, on April 17, thousands flocked to Rufaro stadium in Mbare, the Harare township that was the crucible of the struggle. There was a carnival atmosphere, people wore caps and t-shirts bearing the face of the new prime minister, Robert Mugabe.  At midnight, the green, gold and black flag of Zimbabwe, with the African fish eagle, replaced the Union flag.  A 32-year-old Prince Charles stood and saluted as the Union Flag came down for the last time in Africa.
People crushed into the stadium as Marley took to the stage. The police panicked and fired teargas into the crowd.
Back-up singers Marcia Griffiths and Rita Marley, the wife of the lead singer, were the first band members to get a whiff of teargas and they ran backstage. When it cleared, they went back.
“Bob was still in his element, he didn’t realize what was happening around him. So when we got back on stage, this is what Bob said to us: ‘Now I know who the true revolutionary is,’” says Rita in a documentary years later.
“It was a poignant moment; Bob Marley takes a celebratory stance at the front stage, calling out ‘Viva Zimbabwe!’ Each time eliciting a greater response from the audience. It is a moment pregnant with possibilities. Rastafari in our father’s land. A realization of the inherent unity in black culture, as emotional for the audience as it is for the band. Homecoming,” says Zindi.
“Bob Marley was at his height and that alone attracted a lot people’s attention to Zimbabwe. It was an historic moment of the liberation of Zimbabwe where the white arrogant people declared independence and so on. It was a moment when I and the other progressive intellectuals went to Zimbabwe. It was a special period. It captured the imagination of the world. You can’t hold Marley responsible for what Robert Mugabe did after that,” says Gutto.
One of the things that Mugabe did was to declare Gutto persona non grata, on unspecified national security grounds, in 1988 and deported him.
One of the many Zimbabweans turned away on independence night by police outside Rufaro stadium was 21-year-old Enos Nyarenda, an activist who had just returned from exile.
“When the war ended in Zimbabwe, in January, I went home in Harare with many other activists to witness our independence. My mother cried so much. It was after two years of my absence. My father was still in detention then, detained by the Ian Smith government, but he was released just a few days before independence day. I can’t describe the feeling, it was so emotional. We hugged. He had been detained for five years,” says Nyarenda, now a businessman in Kwekwe, in central Zimbabwe.
Luckily, for thousands like Nyarenda, Marley agreed to play again at Rufaro the following day. Nyarenda went with his new girlfriend, Susan, who is now his wife and mother of his three children.
“Oh man, we had this international outfit for the first time in Zimbabwe, these guys with long dreadlocks. Some of these things were not familiar at that time. I have never attended a music show bigger than that one. Having been from the bush, I was not the real reggae person. But the people were so excited and screaming. It was a free show. We instead had love for the music. Everyone couldn’t believe we were actually free, I never felt like that in my life. We are still talking about that day,” says Nyarenda.
So will Africa as long as people talk.
