UK seeks to expand trade links with Durban

<p style="font-weight: 400;">Over 45 people from business and government – the biggest combined regional delegation ever to travel on an investment roadshow –spent their last Mission day in London on Friday 8th June to share the facts that Durban is Africa&#8217;s ‘premier investment destination’.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Delegates were responding to a request from Her Worship, eThekwini Mayor, Cllr. Zandile Gumede to promote the city and the province that houses it – KwaZulu-Natal, to the UK markets. Her Worship The Mayor said, &#8220;Durban is geared for growth and we came in force to the U.K., with our Business Leaders, to confirm in person that we are ready for significant new investments.&#8221;</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">The Durban Mayor and MEC Finance, Mrs Belinda Scott, had several detailed engagements beginning in Newcastle, and County Durham before progressing on to London. These engagements with the UK&#8217;s &#8220;Northern Powerhouse&#8221; were with the Mayors, Councillors and Business Leaders in Newcastle, Tees Port, and County Durham to advance mutually beneficial partnerships. Newcastle is a formal &#8220;Partner City&#8221; with Durban, and our Durban Chamber of Commerce has an active Partnership Agreement with the N.E. England Chamber of Commerce.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Mrs Katie Friedman, a British Citizen now resident in Durban, and a Founding Director of Urban Lime (Urban regeneration Investors who&#8217;ve invested GBP100 million into Durban already) gave reasons why they have chosen Africa&#8217;s &#8220;premier investment destination. She said, &#8220;As a British originated company, we came to Durban over 3 years ago because there are not only great business opportunities, offering globally attractive returns, but also because it has Africa&#8217;s best quality of life. It is a truly African city, alive with possibilities for all who come to work in partnership with South Africans. It&#8217;s now our family and friends new home for life!&#8221;</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">When planning the London leg, only about 25 B2B (business to business) meetings with investors, financiers and those interested in the region&#8217;s offerings were expected to take place, but due to high demand, more than 65 B2B meetings were concluded. These were with the likes of UK companies Nex Rubica, Invest Trade SA, Fieldstone, Abalon Capital and Titanium Capital.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Those with capital to invest came to hear about Durban, KwaZulu-Natal&#8217;s key catalytic projects, local businesses and the region’s competitive advantages. Catalytic projects discussed included Dube Tradeport, the province’s flagship infrastructural development, Keystone Park, a logistics, warehousing and light industrial precinct, the Cornubia mixed-use development, Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone, a prime industrial and trade hub; the Beachwood high-security premium residential location and 5-star resort, the Oceans Mall Development, and others like the Durban Point Waterfront. Sporting business investments were also on offer via Amazulu Football Club, a Premier Soccer League club based in Durban, South Africa which is reaching out to the world.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Cllr Sipho Kaunda, eThekwini Municipality’s Economic Development and Planning Committee Chairperson attributed the interest, &#8220;to the opportunities the region has for both small and large investors. The 65+ B2B meetings concluded <span data-term="goog_2006503861">on Friday</span> alone set a new record from which additional investments will flow into our economy.&#8221;</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Martin Orji, Managing Principal and Board Member of NR Capital, one of the investors at the London B2B meetings described these engagements as, &#8220;timely, in terms of the selection of projects &#8211; it is the type investors need to see&#8221;, he said.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">This was confirmed by Mr Batanayi Katongera, a Head at MacFarlanes LLC in London who remarked, &#8220;The quality of the projects, and the packaging plus presentation of the Durban investment materials is truly world class; better than most I&#8217;ve seen in London to date.&#8221;</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">In closing, Mr Phillip Sithole, eThekwini Metro&#8217;s Deputy City Manager advised, &#8220;We are pleased to have brought 45 top Executives to the U.K. with a combined total value of projects open for investment which exceed 10 billion Pounds. We are proud to have brought in big business leaders from Durban who are looking for international partners, and many of them had more than 5 Business meetings on this 1 day in London alone. So indeed, we took Durban to the world&#8221;, Sithole confirmed.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Invest Durban will now be assisting these businesses, and others from both the U.K. &amp; Durban who couldn&#8217;t come, to make follow ups in the coming weeks. <p>Nov 15 (Reuters) &#8211; The UK and US governments on Wednesday advised their citizens currently in Harare, Zimbabwe, to remain indoors until political situation becomes clearer in the African country.</p>
<p>“Due to the uncertain political situation in Harare, including reports of unusual military activity, we recommend British nationals currently in Harare to remain safely at home or in their accommodation until the situation becomes clearer,” the Foreign &#038; Commonwealth Office said in a statement.</p>

IMF forecast for SSA too gloomy – Expert

<p>Britain said it will maintain duty-free access to its markets once it has left the European Union for goods from nearly 50 developing countries including Bangladesh, Sierra Leone and Haiti.</p>
<p>The government said around 48 countries would continue to benefit from tariff-free exports on all goods other than arms and ammunition to the UK and that once it had left the EU in 2019 it would explore options to expand trade relations further.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our departure from the EU is an opportunity to step up to our commitments to the rest of the world, not step away from them,&#8221; International Trade Secretary Liam Fox said in a statement.</p>
<p>&#8220;Free and fair trade has been the greatest liberator of the world&#8217;s poor, and today&#8217;s announcement shows our commitment to helping developing countries grow their economies and reduce poverty through trade.&#8221;</p>
<p>Britain embarked on its negotiations to leave the EU earlier this week, agreeing to deal first with EU priorities such as a possible &#8220;Brexit bill&#8221; before discussing future trade deals with the bloc.</p>
<p>According to the government, around 20 billion pounds a year of goods were shipped to Britain from these developing countries, accounting for around half of its clothing, a quarter of its coffee and other goods such as cocoa, bananas and roses.</p>

<p>Britain has increased its security threat level to &#8220;critical&#8221; from &#8220;severe&#8221; following a suicide attack in Manchester that killed 22 people, including children, Prime Minister <a href="http://www.cnbc.com/theresa-may/" target="_self">Theresa May</a> said on Tuesday.</p>
<p>May also said members of the armed forces would boost security at key sites and military personnel might be deployed at public events such as concerts and sports events.</p>
<p>May said the independent body which sets the threat level had recommended it be raised after a man named by police as Salman Abedi set off an improvised bomb on Monday night as crowds streamed out of a concert.</p>
<p>&#8220;It is now concluded on the basis of today&#8217;s investigations that the threat level should be increased for the time being from severe to critical,&#8221; she said in a televised statement following a meeting of the government&#8217;s crisis response committee.</p>
<p>&#8220;This means that their assessment is not only that an attack remains highly likely but that a further attack may be imminent.&#8221;</p>


UK Prime Minister May raises threat level to critical

<p>British police have searched six addresses and made seven arrests in raids as part of an investigation into <a href="http://www.cnbc.com/2017/03/22/shots-reported-fired-outside-uk-parliament-building-in-lockdown-parliamentary-official.html" target="_self">Wednesday&#8217;s attack on the Houses of Parliament</a> which left four people dead and 40 injured, London&#8217;s Metropolitan Police has announced.</p>
<p>News of the police action, including one address in Birmingham, follows on from Wednesday when a suspected terrorist plowed a car into pedestrians on London&#8217;s Westminster Bridge and then fatally stabbed a police officer before being shot.</p>
<p>Mark Rowley, assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, said at a press conference Wednesday night that the dead attacker was believed to be the only suspect, but declined to comment on the assailant&#8217;s identity. The police&#8217;s working assumption is that the attacker was inspired by international Islamist terrorism.</p>
<p>Londoners can expect to see heavier police presence, both armed and unarmed, throughout the city for the next few days, Rowley said.</p>
<p>Speaking Thursday morning, U.K. Defense Secretary Michael Fallon said that Parliament is currently reviewing Parliament&#8217;s already stringent security measures.</p>
<p>Wednesday&#8217;s attack unfolded around 2.40 p.m. local time when the assailant drove a grey Hyundai i40 along a pavement on Westminster Bridge, before running to Parliament. There he was confronted by a police, including unarmed PC Keith Palmer, who later died from stab wounds.</p>
<p>Tobias Ellwood, a member of Parliament who was at the scene at the time, was praised for his efforts to provide mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to Palmer. The other victims are yet to be named.</p>
<p>Addressing the country outside 10 Downing Street Wednesday evening, Prime Minister Theresa May condemned the attack and applauded the heroism demonstrated by the police.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;The terrorist chose to strike at the heart of our capital city, where people of all nationalities, religions and cultures come together to celebrate the values of liberty, democracy and freedom of speech,&#8221; she said.</p>
<p>&#8220;But let me make it clear today, as I have had cause to do before, any attempt to defeat those values through violence and terror is doomed to failure.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Londoners and tourists will wake up on Thursday and go about their lives as normal, May said.</p>
<p>The city&#8217;s mayor, Sadiq Khan, echoed the prime ministers remarks, saying &#8220;Londoners will never be cowed by terrorism.&#8221;</p>
<p>The attack is the worst London has seen since 2005, when the capital was hit by a series of suicide bomb attacks on public transport during rush hour on July 7.</p>
<p>The city has been on &#8220;severe&#8221; alert since 2014, which indicates that an attack is &#8220;highly likely&#8221;, in response to conflicts in Iraq and Syria. This was an increase from a previous level of &#8220;substantial&#8221;, which implies a strong possibility of an attack.</p>
<p>Parliament is to hold a minute&#8217;s silence at 10 a.m. London time on Thursday to commemorate the victims of the attack.</p>
<p>Wednesday marked the one year anniversary of suicide attacks which took place in Brussels&#8217; Zaventem Airport. Memorial services were held around the country to remember the 32 people killed and 320 injured by the attack.</p>

<p>In a special address at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, Theresa May, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, said that Britain would stand up for free markets, free trade and globalization, and would work to ensure that they work for everyone.</p>
<p>“Forces that underpin the rules-based international system that is key to global security are somehow at risk of being undermined,” she warned. “The sense among the public is that mainstream political leaders have failed to hear their concerns for too long.” The Brexit, Britain’s decision by referendum last year to leave the European Union, was the outcome of this failure, May explained. The British “chose to build a truly global Britain,” she reckoned. “It means that Britain must face up to a period of momentous change. The UK will step up to a new leadership role.”<br />  <br /> Britain will become even more global and internationalist, May asserted. It is not turning its back on Europe. “We are a European country and proud of our European heritage, but we are also a country that has always looked beyond Europe. I want the UK to emerge from this period of change as a truly global Britain, a country that goes out into the world. We are going to be a confident country that is in control of its own destiny once again.” This new global role will not compromise Britain’s identity, May argued. “A global Britain is no less British because we are a hub for foreign investment.” Britain will continue to promote international cooperation wherever it can, she said, noting that she has convened a panel at the Annual Meeting this year to address slavery.<br />  <br /> In building this global Britain, “we have to take the people with us,” May said, recognizing that “talk of greater globalization can make people fearful.” She added: “We must never forget that our first responsibility as governments is to serve the people. We need to do more to respond to the concerns of people who feel that the modern world has left them behind.”<br />  <br /> To win the trust of the people will require new approaches by government and business, May explained. Businesses will have to show that they are playing by the same rules as everybody else. She said she welcomes <a href="http://weforum.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6308fe51b420dc9ff3834abc8&amp;id=eb5ae6bec6&amp;e=42980baa5c">The Compact for Responsive and Responsible Leadership</a>, sponsored by the International Business Council of the World Economic Forum. The compact aims to create a corporate governance framework with a focus on the long-term sustainability of corporations and the long-term goals of society.<br />  <br /> Governments may have to adopt industry strategies to make markets, trade and globalization more fair and inclusive, with the benefits widely shared, the prime minister stressed. “I am determined to stand up for free markets, free trade and globalization” and “to use this moment to provide responsive and responsible leadership to bring the benefits of free trade to every corner of the world.” She concluded: “We must step up and take control to make sure that free trade and globalization work for everyone.”<br /> ﻿</p>
