
<p>NAIROBI/ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) &#8211; More African nations confirmed their first cases of the coronavirus and shut borders amid fears of the disease’s impact on fragile health systems, as Chinese billionaire and Alibaba co-founder Jack Ma pledged to donate over 1 million testing kits to the continent.</p>



<p>Thirty African countries &#8211; more than half the continent &#8211; are now treating nearly 400 patients with coronavirus, after Tanzania, Liberia, Benin and Somalia said they registered their first cases. </p>



<p>Africa had until recently been spared the rapid spread of COVID-19, which has infected at least 180,000 people worldwide and caused over 7,000 deaths. But health experts are concerned the continent’s often dilapidated health infrastructure will struggle to cope as cases mount. </p>



<p>“We cannot ignore the potential risk to Africa and assume this continent of 1.3 billion people will blissfully escape the crisis. The world cannot afford the unthinkable consequences of a COVID-19 pandemic in Africa,” Ma’s foundation said in a statement. </p>



<p>The foundation will send 1.1	million testing kits, 6 million masks and 60,000 protective suits and face shields to Ethiopia for distribution to Africa’s 54 nations, it said. </p>



<p>Earlier on Monday, the World Bank said it had committed $60 million to Kenya to help the East African nation battle the outbreak. </p>



<p>Some countries on the continent, such as conflict-hit Somalia, depend on donors to support basic public health facilities. </p>



<p>Somalian Health Minister Fawziya Abikar Nur said the ministry had quarantined and tested four Somalis who came from China last week, and one had tested positive for the respiratory disease. International flights to Somalia were suspended for two weeks, the aviation minister said. </p>



<p>In West Africa, the small and impoverished nation of Liberia announced its first case. Liberia was devastated by a 2014 Ebola epidemic that killed 4,000 people, and its healthcare system has remained underfunded despite promises of investment. </p>



<p>Benin, considered a relatively stable democracy in the turbulent West African region, also announced its first case. The Health Ministry said the Beninois national was being held in an isolation ward in the capital after returning from Belgium and Burkina Faso on March 11. </p>



<p>The Health Ministry in the East African nation of Tanzania also confirmed its first case, a Tanzanian woman who had travelled to Denmark, Sweden and Belgium. She had her temperature taken at the airport but had no fever and was allowed to pass, but later felt unwell at her hotel, the ministry said. [L8N2B913C] </p>



<p>Also on Monday, Rwanda, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Senegal and Cameroon all reported more cases and South African Finance Minister Tito Mboweni said his nation, which has 62 cases so far, may need to raid other government departments for funds to fight the disease. He did not provide any figures. </p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">CRACKDOWN AS BORDERS CLOSE </h3>



<p>Many African nations, including some without reported cases, have ordered tougher control measures, including bans on public gatherings, halting flights and closing schools and universities. </p>



<p>In northern Africa, Tunisia said it would suspend international flights and close its land border in an effort to contain the spread of the virus. </p>



<p>Botswana, in southern Africa, said on Monday it would bar entry to travellers from 18 high-risk countries, including China, Britain, the United States, Iran, France and Italy.  </p>



<p>In West Africa, Senegal said it would suspend flights to and from France, Italy, Spain, Belgium and Portugal, as well as Tunisia and Algeria, for a period of 30 days. </p>



<p>Ivory Coast said it would bar entry to travellers from countries with over 100 cases, although Ivorian citizens and residents would be allowed to return if they went into quarantine for 14 days. It also closed schools, nightclubs and cinemas and banned gatherings of over 50 people, according to a national security council statement. </p>



<p>Ethiopia, Africa’s second-largest nation, joined the growing list of countries that closed schools for two weeks, suspended all large gatherings and cancelled all sports events, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s office said.  </p>



<p>Government buses will give people free rides to curb overcrowding in the public transport system, a statement said. </p>



<p>In Central Africa, Congo Republic said it would suspend all flights from high-risk countries from Thursday. Neighbouring Gabon reduced the number of flights from abroad to one a week per airline and ordered restaurants to close, barring takeout and delivery. </p>



<p>Nigeria’s Health Ministry said the country, Africa’s most populous, had strengthened contact tracing, stockpiled reagents used in test kits and increased testing capacity.  </p>



<p>Also on Monday, Kenyan police raided a clinic alleged to be selling fake coronavirus testing kits. Police detained staff and locked the facility, witnesses told Reuters journalists at the scene, after it had been advertising testing kits online. </p>

More African countries confirm first coronavirus cases as Jack Ma pledges aid


<p>JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) &#8211; South African hotel and casino operator Sun International is already handling cancellation of conference bookings and events by clients, CEO Anthony Leeming said on Monday, as companies rush to contain the spread of the coronavirus.  </p>



<p>Late on Sunday, South African president Cyril Ramaphosa declared a national state of disaster as he announced a range of measures to contain the outbreak that has so far infected 61 and showed the first signs of internal transmission. </p>



<p>Measures to be taken include travel bans from countries such as Italy, Germany, China and the United States. The government will also prohibit gatherings of more than 100 people and cancel large events and celebrations, Ramaphosa said. </p>



<p>Even before the declaration, Sun International had started seeing the impact of travel restrictions, Leeming told Reuters over the phone. </p>



<p>“With travel restrictions we’ve definitely lost all international business and conference group bookings are cancelling left right and centre,” he said. </p>



<p>“With the President’s announcement, we’re going to have all conferencing cancelled for the next couple of months. So that’s the real impact on the hospitality side.” </p>



<p>Events such as music concerts that are usually held at its Times Square arena and Sun City resort have also been called off. Leeming said this will not be a huge loss for the operator. </p>



<p>On the casino side, Sun International has not yet seen a significant slow down in foot traffic but Leeming expects “a little bit of slowdown” as people avoid going out. </p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">ONLINE SPORTS BETTING  </h3>



<p>In line with exploring new growth opportunities, Sun International will launch an online sports betting platform in the next month or two in Peru, Leeming told Reuters. </p>



<p>“Then that will quickly roll-out in Panama where we have an online sports betting license and then we can roll it out quite quickly if we can secure a license in Brazil and Argentina,” he said. </p>



<p>Sun International reported a 91% jump in adjusted headline earnings per share, the main profit measure in South Africa, for the year ended Dec. 31, to 605 cents per share from 316 cents per share a year ago due to lower interest and depreciation and a significantly lower tax rate. </p>



<p>Total income rose by 4% to 17.2 billion rand ($1.05 billion), primarily driven by above-market organic growth from key operations in South Africa and the impact of acquisitions made in Latin America during the prior year. </p>

<p>NAIROBI (Reuters) &#8211; Several African governments on Sunday closed borders, canceled flights and imposed strict entry and quarantine requirements to contain the spread of the new coronavirus, which has a foothold in at least 26 countries on the continent as cases keep rising.</p>



<p>South African President Cyril Ramaphosa declared a national state of disaster and warned the outbreak could have a “potentially lasting” impact on the continent’s most-developed economy, which is already in recession.  </p>



<p>Measures to be taken there include barring travel to and from countries such as Italy, Germany, China and the United States.  </p>



<p>“Any foreign national who has visited high-risk countries in the past 20 days will be denied a visa,” he said, adding that South Africans who visited targeted countries would be subjected to testing and quarantine when returning home. </p>



<p>South Africa, which has recorded 61 cases, will also prohibit gatherings of more than 100 people, Ramaphosa said. [nL8N2B8163] </p>



<p>Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta said his government was suspending travel from any country with reported COVID-19 cases.</p>



<p>“Only Kenyan citizens, and any foreigners with valid residence permits will be allowed to come in, provided they proceed on self-quarantine,” he told the nation in a televised address.  </p>



<p>The ban would take effect within 48 hours and remain in place for at least 30 days, he said.   </p>



<p>Schools should close immediately and universities by the end of the week, he added. Citizens would be encouraged to make cashless transactions to cut the risk of handling contaminated  money.  </p>



<p>Kenya and Ethiopia have now recorded three and four cases respectively, authorities in each nation said on Sunday, two days after they both reported their first cases.  </p>



<p>In West Africa, Ghana will ban entry from Tuesday to anyone who has been to a country with more than 200 coronavirus cases in the past 14 days, unless they are an official resident or Ghanaian national. Ghana has recorded six cases.     </p>



<p>President Nana Akufo-Addo said in a televised Sunday evening address that universities and schools will be closed from Monday until further notice. Public gatherings will be banned for four weeks, he said, though private burials are allowed for groups of less than 25 people.  </p>



<p>In southern Africa, Namibia ordered schools to close for a month after recording its first two cases on Saturday.  </p>



<p>Djibouti, which has no confirmed case of COVID-19, said on Sunday it was suspending all international flights. Tanzania, which also has no cases yet, canceled flights to India and suspended school games.  </p>



<p>Other nations have also shuttered schools, canceled religious festivals and sporting events to minimize the risk of transmission. Some 156,500 people worldwide have been infected and almost 6,000 have died. [nL4N2AY3AS] </p>

<p>Things
are getting pretty edgy here in the United States these days. The 2020 presidential
election is a year away and the storm clouds are forming on the horizon. They
are dark and foreboding for sure. The country is still reeling from an
emotionally unhinged and acrimonious election in 2016 that the majority of the
people, half the Congress and roughly 30,000 U.S. journalists have never quite gotten
over. </p>



<p>This
election though, will be one for the ages. There are 18 Democratic candidates,
all outraged at just about everything, and each fighting to be the one that
takes on the great orange cyclops, Donald Trump; a rabid and unfiltered army of
one, shooting Machiavellian twitter missiles at friend and foe alike. </p>



<p>So,
the question is, who will emerge for the Democrats as the nominie and face Trump
in the general election next November? That is, assuming he even ends up being
the Republican candidate to begin with. He might not. And that’s because the Democrats
have a few missiles of their own to help ensure victory in the election and
eliminate Trump entirely. One way or the other. </p>



<p>They’ve
launched a rancorous and partisan impeachment proceeding against the president intended
to crash head-on into the election and ensure that the Democrats win the White
House in 2020. And it’s going to blow the country to ideological smithereens. Anyone
who thinks that America is a polarised tinderbox now, “ain’t seen nothing yet.”
</p>



<p>Since he took office, Trump has been under constant
legal and political attacks from all sides. Most of his wounds though, are largely self-inflicted
thanks to his complete disregard for the rule of law and any sense of presidential
etiquette or protocol. Even Richard Nixon looked honorable by comparison. But Trump
has a large, impassioned base of supporters, not to mention 66 million Twitter
followers, that he is counting on to push him over the finish line in November.
</p>



<p>So,
is there a Democrat out there who can beat him? To be sure, they’ve assembled a questionable lineup of
candidates. First, there’s former Vice-President Joe Biden, a 77-year-old
“moderate” that I’m not sure would actually be able to stay awake for the full
four-year term. He’s got a solid resume as a statesman and is well respected in
corridors of Washington. But to the younger, more progressive Democrats who are
starting to define the party ideologically, he’s part of the problem and from a
political era gone by. </p>



<p>Then you have Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth
Warren. Two socialists that want to disassemble America piece by piece. Warren, for one, wants
to dismantle the U.S. free enterprise system in favor of something called
“accountable capitalism” which is essentially a fundamental reordering of
American business and a redistribution of most of the profits to everyone other
than the shareholders. </p>



<p>And,
finally, there are the other fifteen unimportant Democratic candidates who, if
you listen to them, seem to be on some kind of pilgrimage to save mankind from
itself. None of them will be in the conversation for long.</p>



<p>The
U.S. is in unchartered waters now and everything is riding on the impeachment
proceedings. The strategy of “weaponizing” them was not lost on the Democrats. They
were smartly timed to either destroy Trump completely or wound him badly enough
with the public that he simply can’t win. By their calculus, this is how the Democrats
believe they can retake the White House in 2020. </p>



<p>But
the prevailing wisdom says the Republican controlled Senate will hold party
lines and not impeach him. For all the pomp and circumstance, the votes just
aren’t there, and it is unlikely that enough Republicans would cross over and
vote to impeach the president. This would leave the Democrats reeling and
scrambling for answers. And on the heels of a stinging impeachment defeat, the party
would mostly assuredly move even further left. This would badly weaken the
moderate, Joe Biden, in the polls leaving Warren or Sanders as the presumptive nominee.
</p>



<p>The
Democrats remember all too well watching the hapless Republicans stand idly by as
Trump steamrolled their party in 2016. Now, many of them shudder as they
consider the specter of Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders doing the same thing
to them. The threat of a socialist taking the helm of the party is simply unthinkable
to many Democrats. </p>



<p>So,
if Warren or Sanders continue to surge in the polls, and it looks like either one
could become the Democratic nominee in July, then you can quite possibly expect
a dark horse to enter the race, a late entry by the name of Hillary Clinton. </p>



<p>That’s
right, Hillary Clinton. Round Three. Crazy? Not so much. She’s just waiting for
the opening. For the right moment. Her public statements of late certainly make
it sound like she’s ready to rumble again. And with Biden having likely faded by
that point, it will give her the opportunity she’s been looking for. </p>



<p>Hillary
to the rescue.</p>



<p>There
is a school of thought that believes that Clinton gives the Democrats someone
who is electable and a real alternative to Warren and Sanders, who many in the
party are terrified of. She would position herself as the sensible, moderate
choice who can beat Trump and restore America to respectability. </p>



<p>There’s
also another school of thought that says Clinton entering the race is
preposterous. Ridiculous. She’s old news. But, don’t be so sure. Because the
rules have changed, in large part, thanks to Trump himself. He turned
everything upside down in 2016 and now, anything can happen. </p>



<p>Clinton
still has a huge following among baby boomers, women, LGBT, African Americans, Jews,
Latinos, and many independent voters. And here’s the best part. Just like
Hillary herself, they’re all still fuming about losing the 2016 election. If
she runs, they will turn out in force. </p>



<p>Nothing
like four years of angst to bring out the voters.</p>



<p>Head
to head, Clinton would likely beat Trump in the General Election. Currently,
54% of the public disapproves of his job performance and it is slipping even further
among Republicans as the impeachment proceedings take a daily toll on his
electability. With 29% of the country registered as Democrats, 26% as
Republicans and 43% as Independents, Trump will need to capture a big chunk of
the independent vote to win, which would be difficult. Maybe even impossible. </p>



<p>Given
the bitter, wall-to-wall media coverage, and the soon to air live impeachment hearings
on television, public sentiment will continue to turn definitively against him.
And many of the Independents that he desperately needs to win the election, would
almost certainly back the safer, more moderate choice. </p>



<p>Even
if it is Hillary Clinton. </p>



<p>For
her, who knows, maybe the third time will be the charm. Or maybe, it’s just the
law of unintended consequences.</p>
