President Infantino addresses special event on safeguarding sport from corruption and crime; FIFA (www.FIFA.com) protecting “not just football and its institutions, but also the very people that practise the sport”. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has featured at the 14th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice to discuss the main threats to football and how the sport’s global governing body is tackling them. Invited to speak as part of a special event on safeguarding sport from corruption and crime, President Infantino said that, with a rock-solid commitment to good governance, the new FIFA has laid solid foundations to eliminate corruption from football: “Through the FIFA Forward Programme, we provide each of our 211 member associations worldwide with up to five times more investment than they received before 2016. But the key difference is that each and every dollar of this investment is tied to specific contracts, and external independent audits in each and every country. The new FIFA leaves no room for wrongdoing.” And, referring to FIFA’s ground-breaking financial support scheme devised and rolled out last year, he went on: “During the pandemic, we have again put this into practice with the FIFA COVID-19 Relief Plan, an unprecedented 1.5 billion dollar fund to support football through difficult times. In football’s hour of need, funding only goes where it is needed.” Vigilance and compliance On other threats to the integrity of football, the FIFA President raised the issue of match manipulation, saying that, “with the financial strains of the recent pandemic, we will have to remain even more vigilant than ever to ensure that those involved in matches are not susceptible to match-fixing”. And, through FIFA’s work to reform the transfer system, the organisation is striving to ensure the fair and correct distribution of money “in compliance with national and international financial regulations, including applicable anti-money laundering laws”. FIFA (www.FIFA.com), the French Development Agency (AFD) and the NGO Plan International France are joining forces to launch the Championnes programme in Togo, Guinea and Benin. The goal? To empower girls and promote gender equality through football. To empower women and girls and fight against the discriminatory practices and attitudes that they face, FIFA and the AFD are financing the Championnes programme, which is being run by the NGO Plan International France. Its objective is to promote leadership among girls and promote gender equality through football in a safe environment, namely at school. The various projects under the Championnes programme are being developed in Benin, Togo and Guinea. The expected outcomes include capacity-building and bolstering confidence in 5,390 girls by giving them the chance to work together towards a common goal. The girls and women, aged between 12 and 24, will be given the opportunity to play football in refurbished facilities that are properly equipped, enabling both genders to share the space harmoniously. Leaders from 180 community organisations will also receive support as part of the programme. On 23 March, Plan International France, together with Plan International Benin, Guinea and Togo, will bring together all the local stakeholders to officially launch the programme. The Guinean, Togolese and Beninese football associations will be invited to participate, enabling them to share experiences and skills and create synergies with existing activities. “Every day, football around the world shows us that it brings people together, motivates regardless of age and promotes team spirit. FIFA wishes to use the power of football to drive social change and address some of the greatest challenges we are currently facing at global level in order to tangibly contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals,” said Véron Mosengo-Omba, FIFA Chief Member Associations Officer. “The partnership between FIFA, the AFD and Plan International will allow the three organisations to combine their know-how and respective strengths to promote the role of women in society and reduce inequalities,” he added. The Championnes programme comes under the umbrella of FIFA’s strategy for the promotion of women’s football, which has been in place since October 2018. The potential for personal empowerment and development through football did not go unnoticed by the AFD. Both FIFA and the AFD share the conviction that sport can and should be a vector in sustainable development, social cohesion and equality in Africa. Matthieu Discour, AFD Regional Director in the Gulf of Guinea said, “Football is an inspiring universal language that unites and unifies. It is capable of transcending borders, cultures, beliefs and physical differences. The pitch becomes a space where everyone can be free, excel, share and connect. In addition to the remarkable and unprecedented nature of this partnership, the Championnes programme is fully aligned with the ADF’s strategic focus in terms of gender equality and social cohesion.” This ambitious project is also fully in line with Plan International France’s mission to promote the rights of the child, especially of girls, and gender equality through education. Plan International France Director Yvan Savy notes that “by playing football, girls in the Championnes programme are going to change the way their skills, ability and roles are perceived. They will become the role models, the champions of change, capable of making their own decisions and contributing to reducing harmful practices that are still preventing their communities from developing. ” In West Africa, 30% of girls between 15 and 19 are married, divorced or widowed. More specifically, in Benin, child marriage affects 30% of girls, in Guinea 54% and in Togo 32%. The consequences are dramatic: 29% of girls in Guinea are not enrolled in school and more than 3,000 pregnancies were recorded in school settings in Togo in 2017. Moreover, discriminatory practices against and attitudes towards women and girls continue to exist. In many communities, social norms dictate that girls should become mothers, which is considered to be incompatible with education. Child marriage, sexual violence, female genital mutilation and early childbearing, in addition to unequal access to land and financial services, constitute significant obstacles to the economic and social empowerment of women. Against this backdrop, the Championnes programme can clearly contribute to changing mentalities. Cumulative tests so far conducted are 1,340,657. 113 patients have recovered from the disease, 65 from the Home Based and Isolation Care while 48 are from various health facilities. Total recoveries now stand at 87,736. 7 patients have succumbed to the disease. Springbok Women’s captain Nolusindiso Booi said her team have shifted their mind-set from disappointment to drawing the positives from the hand they have been dealt following World Rugby’s confirmation on Tuesday that the Rugby World Cup has been postponed to 2022. World Rugby recommended last week that the extravaganza, which was set to be hosted between 18 September and 16 October in New Zealand, be postponed due to the pandemic, which was endorsed by the Rugby World Cup Board and World Rugby Executive Committee on Tuesday. World Rugby will announce the revised tournament dates in due course. Booi admitted that after the initial disappointment following the recommendation last week, the team’s focus has switched to capitalising on the additional time to prepare for the competition so that they are able to take the field fitter, stronger and sharper. “We were disappointed initially because we have been working very hard to ensure that we could give a good account of ourselves in New Zealand,” said Booi. “But this difficult decision was taken with the safety of all involved in mind, and that has to be the top priority. “The postponement of the tournament will hopefully allow the hosting of this massive world sporting event free from any risks associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, and where the teams are free to enjoy the experience fully.” The hard-working lock added: “The positive aspect is that it will give us more time to prepare for the tournament with a focus on game time, conditioning and mastering our structures and game plan, so that we are even better prepared when we run onto the field next year.” Booi was pleased with the strides made by the Springbok Women’s training group in Stellenbosch since they assembled early in January, and she looked forward to welcoming several other team-mates for the last two weeks of the camp from Sunday. Download logoThe 8th of March marks the celebration of the International Women’s Day which is the day to raise awareness on what still needs to be done to achieve gender equality internationally. This year’s theme is geared to look at women in leadership and the role of equality when recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic. While governments and international organizations worldwide called for concerted efforts by all to stop the spread of the pandemic, it is paramount to include the most vulnerable and marginalized in our society in the response mechanisms and protect their rights, in the spirit of social justice. This year’s theme resonates also with the International Day of Social Justice which was celebrated on the 20th of February; under the theme “Closing the Inequalities Gap to Achieve Social Justice”. With social justice being an underlying principle to achieve a peaceful and prosperous Africa driven by its people, the African Union upholds this principle when promoting gender equality or the rights of marginalized people, such as women migrants’ worker in cross-border trading domain. The AU’s agenda 2063 (https://bit.ly/3cvssVZ) is calling for an Africa that is people-driven and relies on the potential of its people. Aspiration 6 of Agenda 2063 specifically focuses on African women and children. The Global Compact on Migration (http://bit.ly/3t7Fz63) calls on all signatory Member States to adopt and strengthen legislation relevant to women migrant workers such as the extension of coverage in national labour law in the formal and informal sectors, prohibition of sexual, gender and disability-based violence, discrimination and harassment in employment and occupation. The informal economy forms a large part of Africa’s job market with the share in Sub-Saharan Africa being amongst the highest globally. Congruently, the informal economy plays a significant role in most African countries and employs a significant share of women workers &#8211; including female migrant workers. Informal cross-border trade has been significant to African economies as it represents approximately 40% of regional trade. Informal trading is primarily dominated by women, who represent as much as 70% to 80% percent of such traders in some African countries. The traders play an unprecedented and economically important role in the continent, which includes alleviating poverty and supporting food security. However, with countries implementing regulations that limit cross-border trade, allowing only the movement of goods and services by large companies, cross border traders are alienated to their livelihoods leading to their socio-economic status put to precarious situation. COVID-19 has had significant impacts on global health and economies due to the measures implemented to contain the virus. Such measures have profoundly affected the most vulnerable social groups, particularly those in the informal economy, who lack secure employment and protections &#8211; the case in point is cross-border women group. The Revised AU Migration Policy Framework for Africa (https://bit.ly/3bxhgbK) recognizes gender and migration as a cross-cutting issue. Download logo“Take the COVID-19 Vaccines, they are safe and will not harm you!” This was the resounding call during today`s inaugural session on COVID-19 vaccine strategies in Africa. The African Union’s Economic Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC) Secretariat, ECOSOCC in collaboration with the African Development Bank and the Africa CDC, has embarked on a continental COVID-19 Vaccination Sensitization campaign aimed at ensuring that the wider African public has access to verified information on the COVID-19 vaccine from authoritative sources in the African public health community. Given the transmissibility of the virus combined with its capacity to mutate into different and more resistant strains, public health experts agree that vaccination remains the only realistic path to finally halting the spread of the virus. Opening the webinar series, ECOSOCC Acting Presiding Officer, Mr. Denise Kodhe said the various vaccines that recently underwent clinical and regulatory tests, proven to be safe and effective by the world’s leading drug regulatory authorities had renewed Africa’s hopes of ending the pandemic and getting back to normal. He commended the African Union for safeguarding lives in Africa through Africa CDC by procuring 1.27 billion doses of vaccines estimated to be enough to vaccinate about 60% of Africa’s population. The webinar had a high level panel that included Dr. John Nkengasong, Africa CDC Director, Dr. Moumini Niaone, Executive Director, Pull For Progress and Dr. Serge Kodom, Founder-President, AIMES Afrique. Dr. Nkengasong gave an overview of the COVID-19 situation in Africa, including the Africa CDC`s COVID 19 response and the current distribution of the vaccines. He stated that over 105,000 people in Africa had died of COVID-19 since February 2020. He emphasized that for Africa to beat the pandemic, there was need for a multilateral approach in addition to getting vaccinated. The panelists assured the continent that the COVID-19 vaccines are safe and should be taken without fear as they had gone through rigourous safety procedures and testing. Further, giving perspectives from the CSOs Dr. Niaone and Dr. Kodom, highlighted interventions their organisations were carrying out to halt the pandemic. “A lot of us have had our doubts about the vaccine but it is through consultations, and tough discussions with the health professionals that we can get reassuring answers“ said ECOSOCC Secretariat Principal Coordinator, William Carew in his closing remarks. “I want to commend the Africa CDC on its leadership in acquiring a high quota of vaccines for Africa. “ The webinar series on COVID-19 Vaccines, an initiative of ECOSOCC, in collaboration with Africa CDC and AfDB will run through to June 2021, as the roll out of vaccines begins this month across Africa. During his long and exemplary career, Ambassador Bwakira took on senior roles and responsibilities at various institutions, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the University of South Africa (UNISA), the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and the Crisis Management Initiative (CMI). Ambassador Bwakira fought the good fight as a pan Africanist, international civil servant in the service of Africa and its people, especially for those in Namibia, Angola, Somalia and, more recently, the Lake Chad Basin. The quest for peace was his lifelong passion. The Chairperson offers his sincere condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the people of Burundi on the passing of this illustrious son of Africa. The Chairperson extends his sincere condolences to the bereaved families and the Government of the Federal Republic of Somalia, and wishes a quick recovery to the injured. The Chairperson reaffirms that the AU remains committed to working with the Government and peoples of Somalia to further consolidate peace and security in the country.
