A yellow fever vaccination campaign targeting 700 000 people in Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples (SNNP) and Oromia regions was conducted in November 2020, achieving 93% of the target.  The campaign aimed to stop the spread of an outbreak that was first reported in Enor-Ener Woreda in Gurage Zone of SNNPR by vaccinating eligible age groups in 12 woredas (districts), one of them in Oromia, that were identified as potential epicenters of the outbreak. A first reactive campaign was conducted in 17 kebeles (sub-districts) of Enor-Ener in March 2020 when the outbreak occurred, bringing the outbreak quickly under control. 

“As we all work together to respond to the global COVID-19 pandemic, WHO works with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health, the Ethiopian Public Health Institute and regional health bureaus to support continuation of essential health services like immunization and strengthen response to other health emergencies such as this yellow fever outbreak,” WHO Representative Dr Boureima Hama Sambo said during the response. “We must address all health issues and emergencies to protect the health of the Ethiopian people.”

Following reports of the first cases in March 2020, WHO surveillance officers and regional health bureau teams strengthened surveillance, including active case search. A total of 86 cases and 4 deaths were reported in this outbreak. WHO teams worked with regional, zonal and woreda health authorities to coordinate the response and train frontline workers. Job aids and case definitions were provided to health facilities and staff were coached onsite on case definition and management.   
Health extension workers (HEWs) and woreda-level rapid response teams trained by WHO and the respective health bureaus went door-to-door in Enor-Ener and adjacent woredas to identify persons that meet the case definition for yellow fever and report to the next reporting level. Informed by the surveillance reports, the Ministry of Health’s Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) collaborated with WHO and other immunization partners to launch the campaign in the 12 high risk woredas in the two regions targeting populations aged 6 months to 50 years.  
Health extension workers and volunteer vaccinators wore masks and maintained hand hygiene throughout the campaign, and reminded community members to wear masks and keep a safe distance from others to prevent the spread of COVID-19 during the campaign. 
With a hesitant smile, Woinshet Bereda, a resident of Enor-Ener Woreda, commented, “When I first heard about the vaccination campaign, I wasn’t sure it would happen because I thought health workers wouldn’t want to work with us as they did in the past – you know, because of corona,” adding, “I am relieved that my family is now protected from this other disease. God bless the health workers for serving us with care at this risky time.” 
WHO teams contributed to the campaign through planning, coordination, community outreach and supervision. Daily morning and evening meetings were held to evaluate progress and propose improvements, aiming at achieving high campaign quality. 
The vaccines were provided by the Gavi the Vaccine Alliance, and the campaign was led by the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) and regional health bureaus in collaboration with WHO, UNICEF and JSI’s Ethiopia Transform: Primary Health Care (USAID) project.

More than 100 European and African actors have signed a charter of commitment to the development of the agro-pastoral sectors in Africa, particularly in the Sahel; The original initiative aims to resize and strengthen agricultural cooperation between Europe and Africa while ensuring the protection of biodiversity, a global common good.

The recent health crisis has revealed the resilient capacities of African agriculture. Faced with the closing of borders, the drop of the purchasing power in urban areas, the major disruptions in the international market of raw materials and the availability of agricultural labor generally unaffected both by the virus and the traffic restrictions, the high demand for food products in cities has been a powerful incentive to the increase and the flow of local productions.
Under these conditions, more than ever, agriculture should be one of the main levers of development on the continent. In this respect, a paradigm shift appears indispensable. Thus, the modernization of this sector, particularly through agro-ecology, digital agriculture, and social business, must once again become a priority. It is an economic, social, environmental, security and democratic issue.
To meet these multidimensional challenges, more than hundred operators from all parts of the agricultural value chain, launched on the sidelines of the One Planet Summit 2021, IAM Africa.
A coalition of private and public actors have committed to the sanctuarization of biodiversity, a global common good, and to the development of sustainable agricultural sectors.
The multilateral initiative was formalized in the presence of the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, the President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazaouani, and HRH Prince of Wales.
Creating a community of values and actions
Knowing that Africa represents an exceptional lever of growth, companies, employers&#39; organizations, African and European institutions in the agricultural and livestock sectors have decided to join forces to form a team with multiple expertises that are driven by the common desire to provide an appropriate response to this major issue.
With this shared ambition, the signatories of the present charter (the &#8220;Charter&#8221;) intend to jointly prospect and develop value chains that meet precisely to African issues.
Since co-development is at the heart of the ethics shared by all the signatories, a significant part of these activities will be the responsibility of local actors, wich is promoting technology transfers and the appropriation of the know-how necessary to the sustainable implementation of the agricultural and livestock production sectors envisaged by IAM Africa.
&#8220;The objective of the signatories, through their commitment to deploying this approach in most Africa, is to participate in the promotion of a strategy combining social, environmental and economic development in the service of prosperity but also the preservation of biodiversity and more generally the stability of the continent&#8221;, mentions Karim Ait Talb, co-founder of the initiative and Deputy Managing Director of the Advens/Géocoton Group.
Structuring and boosting agricultural value chains in the Sahel
The signatory partners of this coalition specifically commit themselves to participate in the achievement of the 2030 objectives of “the Great Green Wall”. The Sahelian strip is identified as one of the global &#8220;hotspots&#8221; of climate change. In this region, it is essential to provide answers to the tensions on natural resources to meet the objectives of sustainable development and preserve biodiversity. The structuring of agro-livestock value chains that encourage the deployment of agro-ecological practices and the creation of decent and sustainable jobs will be an important response to the adaptation of the region&#39;s populations and to the mitigation of the effects of climate change, particularly in terms of migration flows and security challenges.
&#8220;The Presidential Council for Africa has been mobilized since 2018 for the structuring of the agricultural value chains in the Sahel and has conducted several missions to meet field actors in order to work on concrete solutions that have an impact on nutrition, on the creation of decent jobs and on the inclusion of vulnerable populations. IAM Africa is a new scheme where French, African and international companies who commit and are ready to invest in the agro-ecological sectors of the future. The Sahel region&#39;s Great Green Wall Initiative received a major boost from the African Development Bank (www.AfDB.org) on Monday. During a forum hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, the Bank pledged to assist in mobilising up to $6.5 billion over five years, to advance the landmark initiative.

The resources will be made available through a range of programmes in support of the Great Green Wall by drawing on internal as well as external sources of funding, such as the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF), among others.
Multilateral development partners joined the Bank in pledging funding for the African-led initiative that aims to rejuvenate life in Africa’s current desert landscapes, providing food security, jobs and a reason for millions of Africans from Senegal to Djibouti to stay in the Sahel region. The forum took place in the margins of the One Planet Summit.
According to Bank President Akinwumi Adesina, “As we rebuild from the coronavirus and its impacts on our world, we must recalibrate growth. We must prioritise growth that protects the environment and biodiversity, and we must de-prioritise growth that compromises our common goals.”
Addressing the summit virtually from Abidjan, Adesina informed delegates that, “The Great Green Wall is part of Africa’s environmental defence system &#8211; A shield against the onslaughts of desertification and degradation. The future of the Sahel region depends on the Great Green Wall. Without the Great Green Wall, the Sahel region as we know it may disappear.”
Climate change has led to extreme temperatures, fluctuating rainfall and drought in the Sahel, a region that is home to 250 million people living in ten countries. Millions of livelihoods and hard-won development progress are threatened.
The Great Green Wall’s plan is to plant an 8,000 km long and 15 km wide mosaic of trees, grasslands, vegetation and plants across the Sahara and Sahel that can restore the degraded lands and help the region&#39;s inhabitants produce adequate food, create jobs and promote peace in the region.
“The Great Green Wall is a wall worth building. A wall that brings people together, not one that pulls them apart. A wall that insulates, not one that isolates. A wall that protects our collective existence. A wall for the environment—a wall for the planet,” Adesina said.
A lack of finance has been the project’s major constraint to realising its goal of creating 10 million jobs, sequestering 250 million tonnes of carbon and restoring 100 million hectares of degraded land in the 11 countries of the Sahel-Sahara region.
The Bank has made the Sahel region a top priority for investment and mobilising new sources of finance to advance Africa’s climate opportunities. One example is the African Development Bank’s Desert-to-Power programme to build the largest solar zone power in the world.
The programme will provide electricity to 250 million people in 11 Sahel countries and help protect the Great Green Wall. Over the next five years, Desert-to-Power aims to make available $2 billion for identified project opportunities for the Great Green Wall Initiative.
A lack of resources to adapt economies to the consequences of climate change is also one of the main constraints on the Sahel region’s development. The Global Center on Adaptation (GCA), hosted by the African Development Bank, aims to address this by mobilising resources and brokering solutions that boost progress in adapting to climate change.
&#8220;The establishment of GCA Africa marks a critical step in our endeavour to accelerate and strengthen our efforts to address the triple challenge of biodiversity loss, land degradation and climate change adaptation on the continent. We will develop and implement joint programs that will mobilise resources at scale to support the Great Green Wall,” said Kevin Kariuki, Bank Vice-President President, Power, Energy, Climate and Green Growth.
Another Bank initiative key to transforming the Sahel into a land of opportunities and inclusive green growth is Technologies for African Transformation (TAAT). The initiative aims to raise food output in Africa by 100 million tonnes and lift 40 million people out of poverty by 2025 by harnessing high-impact, proven technologies to raise productivity, mitigate risks and promote diversification and processing. TAAT, for example, has provided Sudanese farmers access to heat tolerant maize.
In a major announcement, President Macron named President Adesina a Great Green Wall Champion. Adesina was recognised for his personal commitment to addressing climate change in Africa. The position will see the Bank President play a significant role in mobilising political and economic support for the Initiative.
Pledges from others during the meeting, included EUR 1 billion of new financial and technical support to back sustainable agriculture, clean energy, water, infrastructure and private sector financing in 11 Sahel countries from the European Investment Bank and EUR 600 million from the Agence française de dévelopment (AFD).

&#8220;The first thing we do,&#8221; said the character in Shakespeare&#39;s Henry VI, is &#8220;kill all the lawyers.&#8221; Contrary to popular belief, the proposal was not designed to restore sanity to commercial life. Rather, it was intended to eliminate those who might stand in the way of a contemplated revolution &#8212; thus underscoring the important role that lawyers can play in society. Most scholars agree that Shakespeare’s actual intent was “to portray lawyers as the guardians of the rule of law who stand in the way of a fanatical mob.” There is now more than ever a continuous need to be a new trend of attacking lawyers for whom their clients are deserve justice, and to courageously stand on issues even in difficult cases.

Reports by disgraced and corrupt Spanish police commissioner, Jose Villajero, Delfin Mocache Massoko and OCCRP that Equatorial Guinea’s Minister of Hydrocarbons, Gabriel Mbaga Obiang Lima benefited from a construction contract are false.
The claims of any such investigations are false. The documents used to make these claims do not even exist. This is a classic Jose Villarejo and Delfin Massoko tactic. The American Oil Companies will not pay any funds to a government official and before hiring a company to do a construction project, the company has to go through extreme vetting and an enhanced due diligence process where third party risk mitigation is also considered. Sounds like common sense to anyone who reads. The fantasy of Jose Villajero, OCCRP and Mr. Delfin Mocache Massoko comes from the same group that made headlines on January 6, 2015 with another salacious accusation (http://bit.ly/3btEOio) of “Mbega Obiang Lima tenia previsto enviar dos contenedores de dinero a Santo Tomé y Príncipe”. We will not fall for this con game twice.
Five years ago, the same group accused the Minister of having containers of money stored in the port of Malabo. Sounds familiar? Here they go again. Always in January. This time they are more desperate. They have to comply with a contractual agreement with Jose Villajero whom according to the Spanish government was paid 5.3 million euros to spy and smear Gabriel Mbaga Obiang Lima and anyone associated with him.
This redundant and vindictive smear campaign by Jose Villajero, OCCRP and Mr Delfin Mocache Massoko is nothing more than a desperate attempt to make headlines and walk away from their collaboration and corruption. They took Jose Villajero’s money, they spent it and now they have to lie and fabricate stories in a brazen attempt to fulfil their contractual obligations.
After 10 years of an aggressive campaign against H.E. Gabriel Obiang Lima, if they had something that was illegal, they would already have turned it over to the judiciary.
Centurion is a firm built on strong values. We are Pro-African and Pan-African and we do not apologize for defending liberty and pursuing justice. Corporations and governments in Europe, the United States and across Africa hire law firms like the Centurion Law Group to get a job done. We do not breach any ethical lines. We would rather walk away. Just like in Europe and the United States, we should be commended for having trained so many African lawyers on how to negotiate complex agreements and deliver results in a global industry where Africans never had a chance to compete. We make no apologies for that. We have trained and opened doors to more African in oil &#038; gas lawyer than any other law firm that operates in the African continent has. No firm knows the energy industry better than we do. Yet the perception remains that if you are Western firm, you are savvy and if you are an African firm, you are crooked. Oh well.  Who would you hire to do your negotiations, bartenders? Snarky tweeters? Idealistic pundits? Or well-trained lawyers who got your back no matter what?
We will not stop our advocacy and litigation on this matter until these criminals are brough to justice. OCCRP and Delfin Mocache Massoko should explain the reason behind payments by Jose Villarejo for Delfin Mocache Massoko’s mental health treatment, website upgrades and various eye lenses replacements. If these were gifts by Mr. Jose Villarejo, it should have been disclosed and reported. What about the cash payments to Delfin Mocache Massoko?
For OCCRP, Jose Villarejo and Delfin Mocache Massoko, the term “lawyer” has a negative connotation. For them, the public should hate lawyers. Well, Centurion lawyers are hired guns who use legal skills, connections and free market idea to get better outcomes for the special interest corporate groups they represent. We have showed African lawyers that they can dream without making dreams their master and like Rudyard Kipling, that they can walk with Kings without losing the common touch. We will continue doing just that.
Meanwhile, their plan is clear. They attack an effective Minister who fights hard for local content empowerment, poverty alleviation, economic growth and job creation in the energy sector. We must not be fooled. In a move to get out of Covid 19, if they succeed in destroying the economic lifeblood of many African countries, to what will citizens turn to? All of the productive sectors are contributing and are in build back mode but we cannot and must not destroy what we have now, in the hope of finding something better down the road.
Delfin Mocache Massoko, OCCRP and Jose Villarejo are not activist as far as we are concerned. They are pretenders, charlatans, con men and opportunist who are looking for any organization they can find to legitimize their views of extortion, profiteering, racial and religious bigotry and intolerance. We repudiate them and their views and we are taking steps to see that they are disenfranchised and brought to justice.
This generation of Africans continue to let their voices known and are being heard in the right corridors of influence and stand strong condemnation of acts that only seek to undermined us for who we are.

The awards were announced by Merck Foundation CEO in partnership with the First Ladies of Zimbabwe, Zambia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Niger, Namibia, Mozambique, Malawi, Liberia, Guinea Conakry, Ghana, The Gambia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Congo Brazzaville, Chad, Central African Republic, Burundi, and Botswana, who are also the Ambassadors of ‘Merck Foundation More Than a Mother’.

Merck Foundation received a great response from African journalists in the form of several excellent entries. The ‘Merck Foundation More Than A Mother’ Awards Committee decided to create three Groups of Awards from English speaking countries. Hence, the six groups are: 1) Southern African Countries, 2) East African Countries, 3) West African Countries, 4) African French Speaking Countries, 5) Ghana, and 6) Zambia. We did not receive any entries from Portuguese speaking countries this year for this specific award.   
The ‘Merck Foundation More Than A Mother’ Awards Committee further introduced a second and a third position and selected more than one winner in some categories. This was due to the high quality of work received and to encourage more talented and passionate media representatives across all media formats to reach their potential and be a beneficial instrument to address health, cultural and sensitive issues in the country.

Your Excellency, President Emmanuel Macron, His Royal Highness Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, Your Excellency President Ghazouani of Mauritania, Excellencies, distinguished ladies and gentlemen.

I wish to thank President Macron for inviting me to this One Planet Summit’s Great Green Wall Investment Summit. In a complex world that requires strong leadership, you are providing amazing leadership on the climate agenda.

As we rebuild from the coronavirus and its impacts on our world, we must recalibrate growth. We must prioritize growth that protects the environment and biodiversity, and we must de-prioritize growth that compromises our global commons. 

The Great Green Wall is part of Africa’s environmental defense system — a shield against the onslaughts of desertification and degradation. The future of the Sahel region of Africa depends on the Great Green Wall. Without the Great Green Wall, in the face of climate change and desertification, the Sahel may disappear.

The Great Green Wall is a wall worth building. A wall that brings people together, not one that pulls them apart. A wall that insulates, not one that isolates. A wall that protects our collective existence. A wall for the environment &#8212; a wall for the planet.

By building the Great Green Wall, we will secure the Sahel, reduce climate change, reduce migration and improve the lives of people.

The African Development Bank has launched a $20 billion Desert-to-Power program to build the largest solar zone in the world in the Sahel. This will provide electricity for 250 million people and help to protect the Great Green Wall. If there is no access to energy, the Great Green Wall will be no more than trees waiting to be turned into charcoal.

I applaud the efforts of President Macron and HRH Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, and of African Heads of State, on the Great Green Wall. You can be assured of my very strong support and that of the African Development Bank.

I am therefore pleased to announce that the African Development Bank will mobilize $6.5 billion in support of the Great Green Wall over the next five years.

Together we will secure the future of the Sahel. Together we will save our continent. Together we will save our planet.  Thank you.
