2018 NSFAS applications now open

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has opened its doors for 2018 applications, providing an opportunity for students in need of funding for their studies. Kagisho Mamabolo, spokesperson for NSFAS, recently shared in an interview with CNBC Africa that the scheme has increased its capacity this year to accommodate as many students as possible. Mamabolo mentioned that since the opening of applications on the first of August, they have received over 4,000 completed applications with a seamless online experience, interacting with more than 10,000 users per second. NSFAS is confident that the number of applications will continue to increase as the deadline approaches. The partnership between NSFAS and the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) was established to address the challenge of reaching rural areas in the country. Mamabolo explained that utilizing NYDA's existing infrastructure, which includes over 100 youth centers with connectivity, has facilitated the application process in these underserved areas by providing assistance with both manual and online applications. In terms of eligibility, Mamabolo highlighted that anyone with a combined household income of up to 120,000 per annum qualifies for NSFAS funding. This includes current university students without funding for 2018, grade 12 students planning to study in the upcoming year, and individuals who had previously dropped out and wish to reenter the education system. With a budget of over 15 billion for the year and having already funded over 500,000 students, NSFAS anticipates an increase in demand and aims to assist more students with their tertiary education costs. Applicants have until the 30th of November to submit their applications, with an online deadline at midnight and a 5 o'clock cutoff for manual submissions at NYDA offices. Mamabolo emphasized the importance of NSFAS in providing financial assistance to those who cannot afford tertiary education, underscoring the scheme's commitment to supporting students from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. The ongoing efforts to enhance accessibility and streamline the application process reflect NSFAS's dedication to ensuring equal opportunities for learning and growth among South African youth.
