Bharti Airtel acquires Tigo Rwanda

In a move that is set to shake up the telecommunications sector in Rwanda, India-based telecom giant Bharti Airtel recently announced its acquisition of Tigo Rwanda from Millicom International Cellular. The deal, which will see Tigo Rwanda become a part of Airtel's expanding network across the region, is poised to bring about significant changes in the market landscape. Tigo Rwanda CEO Philip Amoateng sat down for an exclusive interview with CNBC Africa to shed light on the implications of the acquisition. Amoateng revealed that the agreement between TEO and ETL shareholders or management has already been signed, with Millicom selling its assets in Rwanda to ETL in a 100% sale. While the deal awaits regulatory approval, Amoateng highlighted that the process is underway and is expected to be completed in due course, paving the way for the transfer of assets to ETL. Until the transaction is finalized and regulatory approval is obtained, both companies will operate independently, with plans for system integration and other changes to take place post-approval. The integration of Tigo Rwanda into Airtel's network is expected to bring about benefits for customers, with a seamless transition anticipated in terms of branding and technology. Amoateng assured that customers will not be impacted negatively by the acquisition, and in fact, stand to benefit from a larger and more robust network. The combination of ETL and Tigo networks is set to enhance call rates and connectivity, offering customers a wider reach and improved service. One key aspect of the acquisition highlighted by Amoateng is the opportunity it presents for customers and the country as a whole. With Airtel's extensive presence in the region, including operations in Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda, Tigo Rwanda customers will now be part of a much larger family with access to a vast customer base and network. Addressing concerns about ongoing projects and initiatives by Tigo Rwanda, Amoateng explained that while there may be changes in certain programs due to the difference in corporate cultures, ETL has similar initiatives that are likely to replace them. Corporate responsibility projects such as the digital change makers program may see a shift in branding and execution, but the ethos of giving back to the community is expected to continue under the new ownership.
