This initiative seeks to educate Rwandan youth on green entrepreneurship

In a bid to tackle the challenges posed by climate change, the Global Green Growth Institute has introduced the Greenpreneurs program aimed at supporting young entrepreneurs with innovative solutions for a sustainable environment, a secure climate, and a flourishing clean economy. Alia Ntanzi sat down with Inhee Chung, the Country Representative for the Global Green Growth Institute in Rwanda, to delve deeper into the initiative's impact on the youth and the continent as a whole. The discussion also touched on the program's role in addressing the economic repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic and its alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). COVID-19 has cast a long shadow over various sectors of the economy, and the green growth dialogue is no exception. Chung highlighted the institute's efforts to ensure that discussions around green growth include marginalized and vulnerable groups, especially those who have lost their livelihoods due to the pandemic. By structuring their programs to address both the challenges of climate change and the economic fallout of COVID-19, the Global Green Growth Institute aims to be part of the solution to the current crisis. One of the key initiatives driving this agenda is the Greenpreneurs Program, which was launched in 2018 and is now in its third year. This collaborative effort between the Global Green Growth Institute, Student Energy, and Use Climate Lab seeks to empower young people to transform their sustainable ideas into viable business ventures that have a positive impact on their communities. With a strong focus on mentorship and support, the program attracts a wide pool of applicants, demonstrating a keen interest from youth in driving environmental solutions. The program has witnessed a surge in innovative ideas from African youth, particularly in tackling pressing issues such as waste management. Young entrepreneurs from Rwanda have showcased promising solutions like turning organic waste into pesticides, recycling plastic waste into construction materials, and repurposing banana and plantain waste into eco-friendly paper bags. These creative endeavors not only address environmental challenges but also contribute to the continent's economic growth. Chung emphasized the immense potential for green solutions to make a significant impact on the African continent if governments adopt sustainable practices. Preserving Africa's rich biodiversity and resources in a sustainable manner could give the continent a competitive edge in global markets where sustainability is increasingly valued. By aligning with the principles of the Paris Agreement and emphasizing renewable energy sources, the Greenpreneurs Program aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote circular economies, and drive economic growth that benefits both Africa and the world. In terms of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Greenpreneurs Program plays a crucial role in advancing the agenda for inclusive and sustainable development. By empowering vulnerable groups, promoting gender equality, and fostering environmental stewardship, the program directly contributes to several key SDGs. Through a community-centered approach, the initiative not only supports environmental conservation but also encourages social and economic empowerment for the continent's youth. As African youth continue to demonstrate their passion for green entrepreneurship and innovative solutions, the Greenpreneurs Program stands as a beacon of hope for a greener, more sustainable future.
