#AGRF2020: How the agriculture sector can leverage big data & AI to improve food security

Microsoft, through its 4Afrika initiative, has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa to support the improvement of food security for 30 million farming households across 21 countries by 2021. Amrote Abdella, the Regional Director of Microsoft 4Afrika initiative, joined CNBC Africa to discuss how the agriculture sector can leverage big data and artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance food security. The interview shed light on the pressing need to address food security as a crucial part of development programs, especially in the wake of digital transformations taking place in various sectors such as education and health. One of the major challenges discussed was the need for financing to support agricultural transformation effectively. While the $30 million agreement with the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa is a step forward, more substantial investments are required. Abdella highlighted the importance of public and private investments, as well as leveraging international organizations to secure funding for agriculture.
