Global Citizen’s Vax Live initiative aims to drive equitable vaccine distribution

Global Citizen's Vax Live initiative is at the forefront of a global concert aimed at urging world leaders to commit to equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines. The initiative is advocating for governments, companies, and philanthropists to pledge $21.1 billion to secure two billion vaccine doses, tests, and treatments for countries in need by the end of 2021. Maimuna Maibe, Global Citizen's Country Director for Nigeria, shared insights on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the organization's mission to end extreme poverty and the importance of equitable vaccine distribution. She highlighted the challenges faced by low-income countries in obtaining sufficient vaccines to achieve herd immunity and emphasized the critical role of the Vax Live campaign in supporting access to COVID-19 vaccines through initiatives like the ACT-Accelerator and COVAX facility. The initiative seeks to mobilize funding to enable lower-income countries to vaccinate their citizens and provide essential healthcare support. Maibe also underscored the significance of addressing vaccine hesitancy and promoting informed decision-making through platforms like Vax Because, which facilitates candid discussions and provides fact-based information on vaccines and public health. With a goal of vaccinating 50% of the global population by the end of the year to attain herd immunity, Global Citizen aims to secure the necessary funding and support from stakeholders to achieve this ambitious target. The initiative has received positive responses and commitments from governments like Spain, which pledged vaccine donations to Latin American and Caribbean countries, demonstrating early support for equitable vaccine distribution. By advocating for increased global cooperation and engagement, Global Citizen is striving to ensure that frontline healthcare workers and vulnerable populations receive the necessary vaccination and care.
