How Nigerian agri-food companies can better access EU markets

In a bid to enhance the technical and managerial capabilities of Nigerian agri-food companies and facilitate their entry into European markets, the Italian Trade Agency (ITA) and the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) have joined forces in a strategic partnership. Alessandro Gerbino, the Director for West Africa at ITA, shed light on the collaborative efforts during an exclusive interview with CNBC Africa. The primary objective of this alliance is to assist Nigerian businesses in rebalancing their trade dynamics by reducing imports and maximizing the value of locally produced goods. Italy, renowned for its competitiveness in the food industry and agribusiness value chain, aims to leverage its expertise and advanced technology to support Nigerian companies in excelling in global markets, particularly in Europe. Gerbino emphasized the significance of empowering Nigerian firms to effectively navigate the European market, encompassing technological advancements, managerial proficiency, certification awareness, and commercial opportunities. The partnership seeks to equip Nigerian entities with the requisite capabilities to meet the stringent quality and quantity standards demanded by European industries. Through an ongoing series of engagements, including networking sessions and participation in trade platforms like Mac Fruit in Italy, the collaboration aims to foster productive ties between Nigerian and Italian companies.
