Qatar Airways remains bullish on Africa’s avition outlook despite COVID-19

In recent years, the aviation industry in Africa has been poised for significant growth, with projections indicating that the region could become one of the fastest-growing for aviation. However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges to the sector, causing airlines to ground flights and borders to close. Despite these obstacles, Qatar Airways has remained resilient, focusing on repatriation flights and maintaining connectivity with 33 destinations even at the lowest point of the crisis. Hendrik du Preez, Vice-President Africa Qatar Airways, shared insights on the airline's operations during the pandemic and its outlook for the future. As global and regional economies gradually recover, Qatar Airways is well-positioned to support the resurgence of key industries such as mining, oil and gas, and energy sectors, which continue to demand essential air transport services. Additionally, the airline is keen on tapping into the informal trade sector in Africa, facilitating smoother trade flows and enabling businesses to access source markets more efficiently. Qatar Airways' cargo division plays a crucial role in supporting the export of African produce, including fresh fruits, flowers, and other goods, by providing reliable air freight services to global destinations. As travel restrictions ease and economic activities resume, Qatar Airways remains dedicated to fostering partnerships and driving growth in Africa's aviation industry, signaling its long-term commitment to the continent's air transport sector.
