Dimension Data CEO on how the pandemic has accelerated digital adoption in the workplace

The past year has been a whirlwind of digital transformation and adaptation for companies worldwide. Werner Kapp, CEO of Dimension Data, recently sat down for an interview with CNBC Africa to discuss the accelerated digital adoption in the workplace amidst the ongoing pandemic. Previously, about 80% of CEOs prioritized digital investment, but this figure has now surged to around 95%. While some companies initially expressed reluctance towards hybrid working, Kapp noted that the momentum of digital adoption has continued even after the easing of lockdown restrictions. The digital shift has been broad-based across various industries, except for sectors where remote working is not feasible. Kapp emphasized the flexibility that remote work offers employees, allowing them to choose where they work and even move to tax-beneficial jurisdictions. While digital adoption has not significantly impacted overall headcount, companies are now focusing on improving productivity while addressing mental health concerns arising from remote work. Kapp acknowledged the 'great resignation' phenomenon, noting that technology skills are highly mobile, leading to increased movement within the industry. Despite challenges such as industry declines due to the pandemic, the focus remains on combining productivity with employee well-being. In response to governance concerns raised prior to his appointment, Kapp refrained from discussing specific details but assured that the matter is progressing towards resolution. He emphasized the importance of distinguishing between external market competitiveness and internal governance issues, hinting at potential developments in the future.
