Volvo unveils Africa’s EV truck

In a groundbreaking move, Volvo Trucks has recently unveiled its first heavy electric truck in Africa. The pioneering vehicle was delivered to Morocco, marking the debut of electric trucks on the African continent. Per-Erik Lindström, Senior Vice President at Volvo Trucks International, shared insights in an exclusive interview with CNBC Africa. Lindström expressed gratitude for the opportunity to discuss Volvo's venture into the African market and highlighted the company's success in Europe and North America in the realm of zero-emission trucks. Volvo Trucks initiated serious production of heavy-duty electric trucks in 2019, subsequently becoming the market leader in Europe and North America for such vehicles. Notably, Volvo is the sole manufacturer globally with significant production of heavy-duty zero-emission trucks. Although the electric truck delivered to Morocco has yet to cover extensive mileage, Volvo is eager to assess its performance on African roads. Lindström emphasized the efficiency of electric trucks, citing higher energy utilization compared to diesel counterparts. The electric trucks promise enhanced environmental sustainability and reduced pollution levels, positioning them as a frontrunner in the future of transportation. One of the key advantages highlighted by Lindström is the operational flexibility of electric trucks, which can run 24/7 while maintaining minimal noise levels. In urban settings where noise restrictions are in place, electric trucks offer a silent alternative for round-the-clock operation. Charging requirements for electric trucks vary based on power availability, with a full charge enabling a range of approximately 300 kilometers. Volvo Trucks envisions seamless integration of electric trucks into Southern Africa, with preparations underway for their introduction in the region. Lindström teased that trucks are already stationed in the area, hinting at imminent deployments in locations like Johannesburg and Pretoria. Prospective customers can anticipate test drives and firsthand experience with Volvo's cutting-edge electric trucks, marking a new era in sustainable transportation for the African continent.
