Rwanda, Zimbabwe to deepen cooperation ties

Rwanda and Zimbabwe are set to deepen their cooperation ties and explore economic opportunities between the two countries. The Runders Zimbabwe business forum, which is wrapping up today, has been a platform for discussions on how the two African giants can work together for mutual benefit. CNBC Africa's Abbey Agena sat down with Sheillah Chikomo, Zimbabwe’s Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister, to delve into the details of the existing bilateral agreements and the future prospects of collaboration between Rwanda and Zimbabwe. Chikomo underscored the significance of the forum, emphasizing the strong relationship and solidarity between the two countries. The goal is to leverage each nation's strengths and comparative advantages to accelerate economic growth. Both countries are looking to learn from each other and capitalize on the expertise present in their respective economies. This emphasis on economic diplomacy was initiated by the presidents of Rwanda and Zimbabwe, who recognized the potential for mutual benefit through collaboration in both the private and public sectors. One of the key outcomes of the forum is the focus on signing new bilateral agreements to further enhance the relationship between Rwanda and Zimbabwe. Chikomo highlighted the sectors of agriculture and tourism as key areas of cooperation. With Zimbabwe boasting four million acres of arable land and Rwanda having nearly two million acres, there is a clear opportunity for collaboration in the agricultural sector. Additionally, the memorandum of understanding (MOUs) being discussed cover a wide range of areas, including joint ventures and commissions, demonstrating the commitment to deepening economic ties. The implementation of the MOUs is a top priority for both countries, with an emphasis on execution and follow-through. The forum has brought together over 80 participants from Zimbabwe to ensure that there is a concerted effort to translate agreements into action. The involvement of both the private and public sectors is vital in solidifying the commitments made through the MOUs. Currently, there are 12 specific MOUs targeted for implementation, signaling a strong start to the collaborative efforts between Rwanda and Zimbabwe. The ongoing dialogue and cooperation between Rwanda and Zimbabwe represent a positive step towards fostering economic growth and development in both nations. By working together and leveraging their respective resources and strengths, these two African countries are paving the way for a more prosperous future. As the bilateral relations continue to strengthen, the potential for further collaboration and mutual benefit expands, creating opportunities for both countries to thrive in a shared economic landscape.
