<p>Democracy has come a long way in Africa, but the continent is still trying to find the best form that entrenches its realities. Recent developments in Zimbabwe has made many wonder if the country will be better or worse off.</p>

<p>In Rwanda, Paul Kagame was recently re-elected for a third 7-year term clinching over 98 per cent of the votes. While the situation in Kenya is unfolding quite differently despite the victory of the incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta &#8211; his opposition candidate Raila Odinga has defied calls to concede the elections and has pledged to continue his campaign to overturn the results. This begs the question; has the state of democracy in Africa improved in the past decade? CNBC Africa discussed this with Steven Gruzd, Head of Governance and Foreign Policy Program at the South African Institute of International Affairs and Gary Van Staden, Senior Political Analyst at NKC African Economics.</p>
