<p>Concerns about the overall state of Eskom’s ageing fleet of coal-fired power plants and the ability of Eskom to meet demand in the next five years are deepening. Already, Eskom is operating its emergency open-cycle gas turbines in the Western Cape almost daily to meet demand and avoid load shedding. Unplanned plant breakdowns, as measured by the unplanned capability loss factor, are significantly higher than expected, while planned maintenance outages remain high, as measured by the planned capability loss factor. <p>After over a month of disturbances on power supply caused by the Eskom wage negotiations deadlock, the two parties have finally signed a three-year wage agreement of of 7.5 per cent .The agreement follows Eskom’s decision to declare a dispute of mutual interest at the Commission for Conciliation‚ Mediation and Arbitration after the unions refused to sign the deal‚ demanding that the company drops its disciplinary charges against employees. <p>According to a report, the management of cash-strapped Eskom is set to lay off 15 000 workers as they look to recover unpaid bills and increase tariffs to boost revenues by about 50 per cent in four years. Eskom which depends on government support to service its 368 billion rand debt is looking into what it calls a liability management exercise to implement a turnaround plan, according to the report. <p>South African power utility Eskom plans to sell foreign debt in around two months following an improvement in investor sentiment. The utility has kept its pay offer to workers unchanged in a second round of wage talks.</p>

<p>It looks as though Eskom executive Matshela Koko&#8217;s defiance has paid off. The Labour Court in Johannesburg ruled in his favour and issued an interim order which prevents Eskom from unlawfully terminating Koko&#8217;s contract of employment.</p>
