NAIROBI, Nov 30 (Reuters) – Kenya’s East African Breweries has opened a 1.2 billion shilling ($7.84 million) microbrewery for cider production, it said on Thursday.

The company, which is controlled by Britain’s Diageo , has a commanding lead in Kenya in premium, mainstream and budget brands like Tusker beer and Johnnie Walker whiskey, but it is diversifying products to cater to evolving tastes in the country.

“We move at pace with the latest trends,” said Jane Karuku, EABL’s chief executive, in a statement.

The new facility, located next to EABL’s main brewery in the capital Nairobi, will produce three flavours of the cider to offer consumers the flexibility they desire, the company said.

EABL also operates in neighbouring Uganda and Tanzania. ($1 = 153.1500 Kenyan shillings) (Reporting by Duncan Miriri. Editing by Jane Merriman)
