<p>Electricity company EDF, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Republic of Cameroon have signed &#8220;final and binding&#8221; agreements for the construction of a 420-megawatt hydropower project on the Sanaga River.   The Nachtigal hydropower plant will be located close to the Nachtigal falls, 65 kilometers northeast of Cameroon&#8217;s capital, Yaounde.</p>
<p>The expected cost of the development is 1.2 billion euros ($1.36 billion), EDF said in a statement Thursday.   A quarter of the project&#8217;s cost will be funded by shareholder&#8217;s equity, with the remainder funded by lenders. EDF said that the IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, had coordinated a lender group that included 11 development finance institutions and four local, commercial banks.   The International Energy Agency has described hydropower as the &#8220;largest source of renewable electricity in the world.&#8221; It adds that hydropower generates roughly 16 percent of the planet&#8217;s electricity from more than 1,200 gigawatts of installed capacity.   The project in Cameroon will involve the design, construction and operation of the facility for 35 years, EDF said. A 50-kilometer power transmission line will also be built. It will be owned and operated by the Nachtigal Hydro Power Company, which is 40 percent owned by EDF. The IFC and Republic of Cameroon own 30 percent each.   EDF added that Nachtigal&#8217;s expected power generation would meet 30 percent of Cameroon&#8217;s electricity demand and amount to an annual power output of almost 3 terawatt hours. Construction is to start by the end of 2018, with the dam set to be commissioned in 2023.</p>

<p>An airport in Kenya is set to have a ground-mounted, 500-kilowatt solar system installed.   In an announcement earlier this week solar business Solarcentury said it had signed a contract with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to undertake the work at Moi International Airport, in Mombasa.   Solarcentury said the photovoltaic system would produce 820,000 kilowatt hours of energy per year and offset 1,300 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually. </p>
<p>The firm added that the installation would make Moi International Airport the first in East Africa to have a solar photovoltaic system installed. Photovoltaic cells directly convert the light of the sun into electricity.  Construction is expected to take 10 months, with the systems set to produce solar electricity by 2019.   The work is part of a 6.5 million euro ($7.4 million) initiative funded by the European Union and implemented by the ICAO. The program is targeting 14 countries with the aim of cutting CO2 emissions in the aviation sector.</p>
<p> In a statement Tuesday, Jonny Andersen, managing director for the Kenya Airports Authority, said that &#8220;the expected savings on electricity as well as reduction in carbon emissions&#8221; would &#8220;contribute towards the efficient operations of Moi International Airport.&#8221;   Moi International Airport is the latest airport to turn to solar power. In July, for example, Hawaii&#8217;s Department of Transportation said it would install 4,260 new solar modules at Honolulu&#8217;s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.   At the time, the Department of Transportation said solar energy produced by the panels would be used at the airport and help to cut the overall electricity bill by almost half. </p>
<p>Elsewhere, India&#8217;s Cochin International Airport, in the state of Kerala, claims to be the first in the world to be &#8220;fully powered by solar energy.&#8221; Its system has more than 46,100 solar panels.</p>

<p>Even though countries in Africa  have been hit by external headwinds, the continent is well on the path to becoming more resilient with infrastructure projects and sound government policies in place, said the president and CEO of a development finance institution on Thursday.</p>
<p>&#8220;South Africa, Nigeria, Angola have dragged the continent behind,&#8221; Samaila Zubairu, president and CEO of Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), told CNBC at the International Monetary Fund and World Bank meetings in Bali, Indonesia.</p>
</p>
<p>Those three economies — the largest in Africa — have performed below expectations, according to the IMF which said the continent as a whole would stand to benefit if the three countries were performing up to their potential.</p>
<p>The larger economies in Africa are &#8220;heavily dependent on commodity prices&#8221; and face more serious challenges compared to smaller countries such as Rwanda, Ethiopia, Kenya, Ghana and Tanzania that have fared better in terms of growth, Zubairu added.</p>

<p>Another challenge Africa faces is rising United States interest rates which affect the level of investments in businesses, he said.</p>
<p>However, as African governments increase spending in infrastructure, agriculture and move away from being overly import-dependent, the outlook for growth is positive, Zubairu added.</p>
<p>&#8220;The continent itself has resilience now. You know with the adjustment by governments away from, I would say, import dependent growth,&#8221; Zubairu explained. &#8220;There is a lot of emphasis on driving agricultural spending. There&#8217;s a lot of investment in infrastructure, all of which would &#8230; accelerate the shared growth in the continent.&#8221;</p>
</p>
<p>China&#8217;s 300 million funding to AFC</p>
<p>&#8220;Infrastructure spending &#8230; I think is one of the things that are required to lift the continent,&#8221; Zubairu said.</p>
<p>AFC has reportedly acquired a $300 million loan facility from a Chinese state-funded and state-owned policy bank, the Export-Import Bank of China, for development projects in the continent.</p>
<p> Some experts have raised questions about whether Chinese investments in Africa come with<br />
strings attached<br />
.</p>
<p>Zubairu said that the $300 million investment does not mean that AFC has to buy more Chinese exports in return.</p>
<p>However, he added: &#8220;There are certain projects that &#8230; can be tied to Chinese export(s) and we would consider those. But the one we have for now is &#8230; not tied to a specific Chinese export(s),&#8221; he said.</p>
