An estimated 3,636 babies will be born in Uganda on New Year’s Day, according to UNICEF.

This is a 7.26 per cent decrease from 2020, when an estimated 3,900 were born the first day of the year.
As the calendar turns to 2021, UNICEF is again celebrating the new lives being brought into the world. Due to its geographical location, Fiji in the Pacific will welcome 2021’s first baby. Globally, over half of the babies born on 1 January are estimated to take place in 10 countries: India (59,995), China (35,615), Nigeria (21,439), Pakistan (14,161), Indonesia (12,336), Ethiopia (12,006), the United States (10,312), Egypt (9,455), Bangladesh (9,236), and Democratic Republic of the Congo (8,640).
Ugandan babies will account for 0.9 per cent of the estimated 371,504 babies to be born on New Year’s Day. Their average life expectancy is 74.4 years.
“The past year has been difficult for all of us, and there is perhaps no better way to turn the page than to welcome new young lives into the world,” said Laura Siegrist Fouché, the interim UNICEF Representative in Uganda. “With the challenges of 2020 behind us and the opportunities of 2021 before us, now is the time to begin the task of building a better world, starting today.”
In its 2021-2025 Country Programme, UNICEF in Uganda will continue to prioritize services and care for the country’s most vulnerable children.
The year 2021 marks the 75th anniversary of UNICEF’s founding. Over the course of the year, UNICEF and its partners will be commemorating the anniversary with events and announcements celebrating three-quarters of a century of protecting children from conflict, disease, while exclusion, and championing their right to survival, health, and education.
Today, as the world faces unprecedented challenges caused by rising poverty and inequality—both made worse by the pandemic and economic slowdown—UNICEF’s work is needed now more than ever.
“There is no more appropriate year than this—the year of UNICEF’s 75th anniversary—to renew our commitment to each other, and to the young lives who will inherit the world we leave,” said Ms. Fouché. “2021 will be a critical year for children, but UNICEF’s three-quarters of a century of delivering results for children around the world are a testament to what we can accomplish together.”

207 people have tested positive for the virus, from a sample size of 4,988 tested in the last 24 hours, bringing to 96,458 the number of confirmed positive cases in the country. The cumulative tests are now 1,046,667.

3 patients have succumbed to the disease bringing the cumulative fatalities to 1,670.

Currently, there are 662 patients admitted in various health facilities countrywide and 3,024 on Home Based Isolation and Care. 28 patients are in Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 14 of whom are on ventilatory support, and 13 on supplemental oxygen. 1 is on observation.

Another 22 patients are separately on supplementary oxygen, out of whom 21 are in the general wards. 1 is in the High Dependency Unit (HDU).

As 2021 approaches, UNICEF is deeply concerned for the health and well-being of 10.4 million children projected to suffer from acute malnutrition next year in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), northeast Nigeria, the Central Sahel, South Sudan and Yemen. These are all countries or regions experiencing dire humanitarian crises while also grappling with intensifying food insecurity, a deadly pandemic and – with the exception of the Central Sahel – a looming famine. “For countries reeling from the consequences of conflicts, disasters and climate change, COVID-19 has turned a nutrition crisis into an imminent catastrophe,” said UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore. “Families already struggling to feed their children and themselves are now on the brink of famine. We can’t let them be the forgotten victims of 2020.” In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, an estimated 3.3 million children under five will suffer from acute malnutrition in 2021, including at least 1 million with severe acute malnutrition. These alarming figures are due to ongoing insecurity, the socioeconomic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, and limited access to essential services for vulnerable children and families. In northeast Nigeria, more than 800,000 children are expected to suffer from acute malnutrition in 2021, including nearly 300,000 with severe acute malnutrition who are at imminent risk of death.
In the northwest of the country, the nutrition situation is even more dire. Kebbi State is experiencing a chronic malnutrition rate of 66 per cent, more than 20 per cent higher than Borno State in the northeast. In Sokoto State, also in Nigeria’s northwest, close to 18 per cent of children suffer from wasting and 6.5 per cent suffer from severe wasting. In South Sudan, The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) update released earlier this month indicated a further deterioration of food security, with almost 7.3 million people – 60 per cent of the population – expected to be facing severe acute food insecurity in 2021. An estimated 1.4 million children are expected to suffer from acute malnutrition in 2021, the highest since 2013. Meanwhile, the number of children suffering from severe acute malnutrition is expected to increase from about 292,000 children this year to over 313,000 children in 2021. The increase in household food insecurity and acute malnutrition among children is attributed to ongoing conflict and insecurity, and limited access to essential nutrition, health care and water, sanitation and hygiene services. Flooding in some areas in 2020 has exacerbated the already high level of acute malnutrition among children. In the Central Sahel countries of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, intensifying conflict, displacement and climate shocks will leave an estimated 5.4 million people struggling to meet their daily food needs during the next lean season. Acute food insecurity has increased by 167 per cent in Burkina Faso, 34 per cent in Mali and 39 per cent in Niger, compared with the five-year average. The number of children suffering from acute malnutrition could rise by 21 per cent. This would bring the total number of malnourished children in the three countries to a staggering 2.9 million, including 890,000 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition. Across Yemen, over 2 million children under five years of age suffer from acute malnutrition, including nearly 358,000 with severe malnutrition – a number that is expected to rise. In 133 districts in southern Yemen, home to 1.4 million children under five, recent analysis reveals a near 10 per cent increase in children with acute malnutrition between January and October 2020. This includes a more than 15 per cent increase – nearly 100,000 children – in cases of severe acute malnutrition. A similar analysis is being finalized for northern Yemen and alarming results are expected there as well. In all these countries and beyond, UNICEF is urging humanitarian actors on the ground and the international community to urgently expand access to and support for nutrition, health and water and sanitation services for children and families. Despite challenges in the context of COVID-19, this year UNICEF and partners have continued to deliver lifesaving assistance to the most vulnerable children and their families in the hardest to reach areas through adjustments on the existing programmes to maintain and increase access. UNICEF has appealed for more than US$1 billion to support its lifesaving nutrition programmes for children in countries affected by humanitarian crises over 2021.

Schools in Ethiopia are reopening after nine months of closure following the confirmation of the first COVID-19 case in the country in March 2020. Since March, the disease has affected over 100 000 people, killed nearly two thousand, and disrupted normal life activities including education. However, in September 2020, the Government lifted the national state of emergency, which was in place since March of the same year, relaxing some preventive measures initially instituted to curb the spread, and paving the way to plan for safe school reopening. 

Melaku Admasu, a father of three, was concerned for the future of his children, including their psychological wellbeing, as they had been staying home following school closures with minimum contact with their peers. “Although I am worried about COVID-19 spreading through schools, I believe the government has done everything possible to protect our children,” he says, echoing the voices of many parents and caretakers. Melaku adds that despite the threats, he is happy that his children are back in school to learn and interact with their friends. 
Ethiopia has more than 39 000 schools, of which 7% are private, as well as several institutions of higher learning which have not been operational for over nine months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. ‘As schools reopen, it is important that strict precautionary measures are put in place to minimize exposure of students, teachers and non-teaching staff to COVID-19 within the school premises and in the community,’ said Dr Boureima Hama Sambo, the WHO Country Representative for Ethiopia. He emphasised that the school reopening is an opportunity to empower young people as agents of change to adopt the recommended positive behaviours to prevent the spread of COVID-19. So far 37 000 schools have reopened enrolling over 20 million students.
WHO is working closely with the Ministries and Bureaus of Health and Education as well as other partners, to support the interventions aimed at making school reopening safe. The WHO Ethiopia country office has supported development of infection prevention and control guidelines and protocols to be used in schools to prevent the introduction and spread of the virus in schools. Different WHO teams – also known as ‘pillars’ in the COVID-19 preparedness and response incident management system – have contributed to the development and implementation of these guidelines, working with their counterparts in the different government sectors. The WHO Ethiopia country office’s Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE), Surveillance and Case Management teams continue to engage with the government to ensure the guidelines are adhered to in the various institutions of learning. Through its regional teams in the ten regions and two city administrations of Ethiopia, the country office is able to support all regions in this process, including with regular assessments and spot checks.
A lot will depend on both teaching and non-teaching staff to ensure that students resume their education in a safe and healthy environment, and make up for the knowledge and skills that may have been lost over the period of closure. “Every morning, as I send my children to school, I am happy to see that sanitary materials are provided, staff checking temperatures at the entrance, and also stopping unauthorized visitors from entering the school compound to minimize the number of people in the school,” Melaku Admasu says. “My children are going to school in shifts, and have strict instructions from their school not to share items and food. If they obey these rules, continue to wear their masks, washing their hands, and not get too close with their friends, they will be safe.” 
In collaboration with partners, key messages on COVID-19 prevention have been developed and distributed to schools to motivate the school community to remain alert. To guarantee a supportive community, parents have also been oriented on their role in the prevention of the spread of the novel corona virus as their children resume school, including ensuring their children have access to face masks, and know how to wear them correctly and consistently. 
The care schools are taking to institute readiness and prevention measures is an important step in protecting the school community, and the wider community, from COVID-19. A strong monitoring mechanism must be instituted to ensure continued compliance by all schools and institutions and avoid future closures due to the spread of the virus in schools and higher institutions of learning.
