All eyes are on video-streaming giant Netflix, which faces new competition from&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/04/15/what-a-1000-dollar-investment-in-disney-10-years-ago-would-be-worth-now.html" class="">Disney’s highly anticipated streaming platform,</a><a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/04/11/disney-plus-will-be-available-starting-november-12-for-6point99-a-month.html" class="">Disney+,</a>&nbsp;as it reported its<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/04/16/netflix-reports-earnings-tuesday-after-the-bell.html" class="">&nbsp;first-quarter earnings</a>&nbsp;Tuesday.



Its stock fell more than 1% in after-hours trading, after closing with a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/?symbol=NFLX&amp;amp;qsearchterm=netfli" class="">share price around $360</a>.



Still, investing&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/16/technology/16netflix.html" class="">in early 2007</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://media.netflix.com/en/about-netflix" class="">when Netflix first began streaming</a>, would have proved to be a good bet. A $1,000 investment made on Jan. 15, 2007, would be worth more than $110,000 as of midday April 16, 2019, according to CNBC calculations, fora total return of about 10,000%. Over the same period, the S&amp;P 500 was up just over 100%.



While the company’s stock took a slight dip after hours Tuesday, following its earnings release, it reported quarterly revenue that beat estimates and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/04/16/netflix-reports-earnings-tuesday-after-the-bell.html" class="">shares are up more than 34 percent</a>&nbsp;as of Tuesday’s close.



Many investors relayed optimistic messages early this week. In a note, analysts at banking firm KeyBanc <a class="" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/04/16/netflix-reports-earnings-tuesday-after-the-bell.html">seemed skeptical that new streaming competition could pose a significant threat</a>.

“While other services may carve out valuable add-on positions, we do not expect the launch of new services from Apple, Disney, AT&amp;T, or others to meaningfully impact Netflix,” they said. “We continue to view Netflix’s strategic positioning very favorably.”



Investment banking company Deutsche Bank&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/04/16/deutsche-bank-buy-netflix-as-it-becomes-a-global-cultural-necessity.html" class="">raised its rating on Netflix shares from “hold” to “buy”</a>&nbsp;early Tuesday, saying the service is becoming more like a “platform” every day.



“Platform status brings network effects not available to peers and competitors,” analyst Bryan Kraft wrote in a note. “Specifically, this is making Netflix even more of a go-to destination when consumers want to watch something, and it means having Netflix is becoming more of a cultural necessity for people around the world. It also&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2017/10/16/netflix-earnings-how-much-is-netflix-spending-on-content.html" class="">makes Netflix a magnet for talent</a>. ”



That means “consumers stay captive within the Netflix walled garden for significant amounts of time,” Kraft added. “Aside from pay TV, which is losing audience share, there are no other competing platforms that approach Netflix’s reach.”



Netflix had a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/02/13/netflix-will-double-subscribers-in-10-years-to-335-million-credit-suisse.html" class="">whopping 148 million total subscribers as of February</a>, and some analysts predict that number will grow to 335 million by 2028. By comparison, Disney+, which will&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/04/11/disney-plus-will-be-available-starting-november-12-for-6point99-a-month.html" class="">officially start streaming mid-November</a>, expects&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/04/12/disney-shares-are-surging-but-some-analysts-are-not-sold-on-the-streaming-service.html" class="">to reach 60 million to 90 million subscribers</a>&nbsp;by 2024.



While Netflix’s stock has shot up recently and has mostly done well over the years, though, any individual stock can <a class="" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2017/11/30/how-amazon-became-one-of-warren-buffetts-biggest-investment-regrets.html">over- or underperform</a> and <a class="" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/04/03/avoid-these-4-investing-mistakes.html">past returns do not predict future results</a>.



Not everyone is sanguine about the company’s prospects. While many believe Netflix’s platform won’t see major disruption thanks to Disney+,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/04/15/netflix-shares-look-risky-ahead-of-earnings-warns-technician.html" class="">shares fell a little more than 1%</a>&nbsp;following Disney’s announcement.



The “action obviously has nothing to do with anything other than a big competitor joining the ring, but what’s important here about Netflix is how poorly it’s been acting over the past one, two, three months and more,” analyst Carter Worth said on&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/options-action/" class="">CNBC’s “Options Action.”</a>



Worth, chief market technician at market research company Cornerstone Macro, acknowledged that Netflix’s stock is “one of the great winners of all time,” but added, “I think it’s risky to go into earnings long, at least full long. I’d reduce or buy puts or some other strategy to protect oneself.”



Disney+ will also be more affordable to consumers than Netflix, which&nbsp;<a href="https://grow.acorns.com/netflix-subscription-price-increase/?gsi=611kqv" class="">recently raised its prices</a>. Disney+ will start at $6.99 a month or around $70 a year for popular content such as the “Star Wars” franchise, as well as the original content it is spending heavily to produce. Netflix, which aimed to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2017/10/16/netflix-earnings-how-much-is-netflix-spending-on-content.html" class="">spend up to $8 billion on content last year</a>&nbsp;— including on original content — is priced at $13 per month for its standard plan.



Netflix also faces competition from streaming services by Amazon and Apple. However, some analysts at bank-holding company SunTrust say more streaming options could be a positive,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/04/12/netflix-is-falling-on-concerns-of-competition-from-disney.html" class="">causing consumers to “accelerate cord-cutting”</a>&nbsp;and focus on their favorites.

In his&nbsp;<a href="https://books.google.com/books/about/Getting_There.html?id=SPDcoQEACAAJ" class="">essay</a>&nbsp;for&nbsp;<a href="https://play.google.com/store/audiobooks/details/GIllian_Zoe_Segal_Getting_There?id=AQAAAIAHlF0USM" class="">“Getting There,”</a>&nbsp;Buffett elaborates on a message that he thinks “is very important to get across to younger people”: Take care of your mind and body.



Sounds simple, right?



But Buffett takes it a step further by offering an analogy: “Let’s say that I offer to buy you the car of your dreams. You can pick out any car that you want, and then when you get out of class this afternoon, that car will be waiting for you at home.”



As with most things in life, Buffett says there’s just one catch: It’s the only car you’re ever going to get&#8230;in your entire life.



“Now, knowing that, how are you going to treat that car?” he asks.



“You’re probably going to read the owner’s manual four times before you drive it; you’re going to keep it in the garage, protect it at all times, change the oil twice as often as necessary,” says Buffett. “If there’s the least little bit of rust, you’re going to get that fixed immediately so it doesn’t spread — because you know it has to last you as long as you live.”



And then, like a bag of bricks, Buffett hits us with a brilliant realization: The position you’re in with your car is exactly the position you’re in concerning your mind and body.



In other words, the way you treat your car should be no different than the way you treat your body.



“You have only one mind and one body for the rest of your life,” Buffett says. “If you aren’t taking care of them when you’re young, it’s like leaving that car out in hailstorms and letting rust eat away at it. If you don’t take care of your mind and body now, by the time you’re 40 or 50, you’ll be like a car that can’t go anywhere.”



Now, you might be wondering whether Buffett practices what he preaches — considering how&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/04/18/warren-buffett-buys-breakfast-from-mcdonalds-for-under-3-point-17.html" class="">vocal</a>&nbsp;the billionaire has been about his love for Coca-Cola, hamburgers, steaks and hash browns.



For the most part, the answer is yes.



When a New Jersey nutritional dentist&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/id/32544241" class="">wrote Buffett a letter</a>&nbsp;encouraging him to eat more healthy foods, he responded by saying his diet isn’t as bad as most might think.



“I have a wonderful doctor who nudges me in your direction every time I see him. All in all, I’ve enjoyed remarkably good health — largely because of genes, of course — but also, I think, because I&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/04/05/amazon-billionaire-ceo-jeff-bezos-ask-yourself-these-12-questions-to-live-a-long-happy-life.html" class="">enjoy life</a>&nbsp;so much every day, ”&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/id/32544241" class="">he said in his response</a>.



And back in 2007, when he was in his late 70s,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/id/32544241" class="">he told CNBC</a>&nbsp;that his doctor told him two years before: “Either you eat better or you exercise.”



Buffett chose the latter, which he called “the lesser of two evils.”

“Business Adventures” is a compilation of 12 stories — previously published in The New Yorker, where Brooks was a staff writer — about some of the most important events in 20th Century corporate America. Each profile is a fascinating account of how a certain moment in history shaped an entire company.



But what truly makes the book so brilliant (apart from its wonderful prose) is that it can appeal to readers who aren’t even interested in the nature of finance. It offers a goldmine of lessons about people and life — our instinctive behaviors, what makes us excel and what troubles lie ahead if we give into our inherent savageries.



Here are most essential life lessons from “Business Adventures”:



1. When you become blind to change, you become obsolete.



In his book, Brooks writes about one of Ford Motor Company’s biggest failures: the 1958 <a class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ford-flop-bill-gates-favorite-case-studies-2014-7">Ford Edsel</a>, which the automaker had intended to be the “new and ultimate” car for middle-class Americans. Brooks notes that Ford wanted to make a car that fit the needs of the American public, so it polled the population to see what they wanted most.



Ford was dissatisfied with the poll results and ended up going its own way. Eager to create hype, it began marketing the car one year before it was even completed. And on launch day, the model was delivered with oil leaks and trunks that wouldn’t open. It was also mocked as being too expensive and using up too much gas.



When you stop paying attention to the evolving changes of society and human needs, you fall behind and become vulnerable to competitors.



2. Failure isn’t a bad thing — accept it, learn from it, and move on from it.



The big Edsel flop led to a $350 million loss. And yet, Ford’s executives took zero responsibility for their failures. In fact, they claimed to have done everything right.



While writing the story, Brooks said a marketing manager told him it was the customers who were at fault. “What they’d been buying for several years encouraged the industry to build exactly this kind of car,” the representative said. “We gave it to them, and they wouldn’t take it. Well, they shouldn’t have acted like that. And now the public wants these little beetles. I don’t get it!”



People often think,&nbsp;If I fail, I will lose something very important&nbsp;— like getting into a good college, working at (or starting) a great company, getting a promotion, making lots of money and so on. But learning from our mistakes is one of the greatest tools for learning; it gives us information on what we need to do differently to succeed in life.



3. Never underestimate the importance of company culture and values.



This is a powerful lesson for anyone — whether you’re a founder, manager, employee or job seeker.



Brooks describes Xerox founder Joseph C. Wilson as being ahead of his time in the ’60s because of how he prioritized building a compassionate work culture. He made it his duty to donate millions of dollars to charities and universities. He implemented progressive hiring policies during the civil rights movement.



“To set high goals, to have almost unattainable aspirations, to imbue people with the belief that they can be achieved&#8230;these are as important as the balance sheet, perhaps more so,”&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gatesnotes.com/media/features/books/Bill_Gates_John_Brooks_Business_Adventures_Xerox_Free_Chapter_eReader.pdf" class="">Wilson said once</a>&nbsp;according to Brooks.



Today, more than ever, employees value unity and purpose in a company — and they’re not afraid to quit or reject a job offer from a company with a bad reputation. Having good company culture will likely lead to higher productivity and motivation, fewer employee health issues and less turnover.



Keep this in mind as well if you’re a job seeker. Joining a company with poor culture won’t keep you happy in the long run.If you haven’t read the book&#8230;



Millennials weren’t born when Brooks’ classic first hit shelves in 1969. (Heck, their parents were barely out of grade school.) But every young and driven person should read “Business Adventures” if they want to deepen their expertise, excel in their ever-evolving careers and thrive in life.

Prince Harry isn’t a dad yet — he and Meghan Markle are&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/10/15/uks-duchess-of-sussex-meghan-is-pregnant-kensington-palace-says.html" class="">expecting their first child</a>&nbsp;this spring — in but it already sounds like he might put a limit on how much time his future children spend playing video games.



The Duke of Sussex isn’t a fan of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/01/04/ninja-blevins-from-a-fast-food-job-to-millionaire-fortnite-gamer.html" class="">massively popular</a>&nbsp;online game&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/05/25/fortnite-video-games-esports.html" class="">Fortnite</a>, with the British royal going as far as to call for a ban of the game at an event at a West London YMCA on Thursday.



“That game shouldn’t be allowed. Where is the benefit of having it in your household?” Prince Harry told reporters at the event,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-47813894" class="">according to the BBC</a>. Prince Harry added that he thinks Fortnite is too addictive, especially for young players.



“It’s created to addict, an addiction to keep you in front of a computer for as long as possible,” the prince said Thursday. “It’s so irresponsible.”



The free-to-play Fortnite, made by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/06/12/epic-games-company-behind-fortnite-was-founded-by-a-college-kid.html" class="">video game company Epic Games</a>, is a multi-player, “battle royale” survival game pitting 100 players against each other at a time. The players look for weapons and tools to try and build structures while killing each other in an effort to be the last person standing.



The game launched in 2017 and quickly became one of the world’s most popular video games, with more than <a class="" href="https://www.engadget.com/2019/03/20/fortnite-250-million-epic-games-sweeney-interview-gdc/">250 million registered players</a>around the world, as of last month. The game has had 10.8 million people playing at any given time, Epic Games said in March. And, while other games (<a class="" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/02/20/royale-video-game-rumble-apex-legends-smashing-fortnite-records.html">including Electronic Arts’ “Apex Legends”</a>) have recently seen a surge in popularity to challenge Fortnite, the latter is still potentially worth as much as $12 billion as a franchise for Epic Games, <a class="" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/02/21/eas-apex-is-crushing-fortnite-heres-what-that-means-for-its-stock.html">according to one estimate</a>.



But, the massive popularity of Fortnite has also come with&nbsp;<a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/fortnite-addiction-forcing-kids-video-172134823.html" class="">concerns</a>&nbsp;that the game is addictive, with such complaints coming from everyone from&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/how-fortnite-triggered-an-unwinnable-war-between-parents-and-their-boys-11545397200" class="">parents</a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/09/18/divorce-online-survey-couples-now-blaming-fortnite-for-divorce.html" class="">spouses</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/fortnite-addiction-becoming-problem-major-193558554.html" class="">employers</a>. Even the World Health Organization&nbsp;<a href="http://www.who.int/features/qa/gaming-disorder/en/" class="">weighed in</a>&nbsp;on the issue of addictive video games last summer, with WHO officially recognizing “gaming disorder” as a mental health condition afflicting gamers who can lack control over their playing habits for periods of months at a time.



Prince Harry previously expressed his Fortnite concerns in October, when he&nbsp;<a href="https://people.com/royals/prince-harry-fortnite-controversy/" class="">reportedly told</a>&nbsp;a group of 8-year-old UK students that they “shouldn’t really play Fortnite,” at their age.



In the past, the Duke of Sussex has talked openly about playing video games, and he even&nbsp;<a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/prince-harry/9818460/Prince-Harry-driving-wedge-between-forces-and-Afghan-locals.html" class="">drew some criticism</a>&nbsp;in 2013 for seemingly comparing his role in the military, as co-pilot of an Apache helicopter, to using a video-game controller.



“It’s a joy for me because I’m one of those people who loves playing PlayStation and Xbox, so with my thumbs I like to think I’m probably quite useful,”&nbsp;<a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/prince-harry/9818460/Prince-Harry-driving-wedge-between-forces-and-Afghan-locals.html" class="">he told The Telegraph</a>&nbsp;about manning a helicopter’s weapons in 2013.



Meanwhile, Prince Harry also has concerns about the addictive potential of social media, which the Duke of Sussex said on Thursday is “more addictive than alcohol and drugs.”



Despite the comment, Prince Harry and Markle recently launched their own official Instagram page for the House of Sussex on Tuesday.

I’ve had a long and exciting journey — full of failures and successes — since I first started working at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/09/12/ex-apple-engineer-ken-kocienda-what-it-was-like-to-pitch-steve-jobs.html" class="">Apple</a>&nbsp;in 1983. I was part of the original Macintosh team and had two stints at the company (one from 1983 to 1987, and then from 1995 to 1997).



Ask people who worked at Apple when&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/03/01/former-apple-employee-guy-kawasaki-once-stood-up-to-steve-jobs-here-is-the-amazing-response-he-received.html" class="">Steve Jobs</a>&nbsp;was around, and they’ll very bluntly tell you it wasn’t easy. There were days where he was impressed by my work, and there were days when I was certain he would fire me. But it was always exciting because we were on a mission to prevent totalitarianism. (You can read more about my adventures in my new book, “<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Wise-Guy-Lessons-Life-Kawasaki/dp/0525538615" class="">Wise Guy: Lessons from a Life</a>. ”)



I wouldn’t trade working for him for any job I’ve ever had — and I don’t know anyone in the Macintosh Division who would, either. My job as a software evangelist in the Macintosh Division defined my career.



Here are the top 11 life-changing lessons that I learned at Apple:



1. Only excellence matters



Jobs elevated women to positions of power long before it was cool or socially responsible to do so. He didn’t care about gender, sexual orientation, race, creed or color. He divided the world into two groups: “Insanely great people” and “crappy people.” It was that simple.



2. Customers can’t tell you what they need



In the early 1980s, Apple was selling Apple IIs. If you asked customers what they wanted, they would say a bigger, faster and cheaper Apple II. No one would have asked for a Mac.



3. Innovation happens on the next curve



Macintosh was the next curve in personal computing. It wasn’t merely an improvement to the Apple II or MS‑DOS curve. Innovation isn’t making a slightly better status quo. It’s about jumping to the next curve.



4. Design counts



It may not count for everyone, but design counts for many people. Jobs was obsessed with great design. He drove us nuts with his attention to detail, but that is what made Apple successful.



5. Less is more



One of the key tenets of Jobs’ obsession with design was the belief that less is more. He was the minimalist’s minimalist. You can even see this in his slides: They had dark blue or black backgrounds with 90 to 190 point text and no more than a handful of words.



6. Big challenges beget big accomplishments



The goal of the Macintosh Division was preventing totalitarianism and worldwide domination by <a class="" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/04/03/ibm-ai-can-predict-with-95-percent-accuracy-which-employees-will-quit.html">IBM</a>. Merely shipping yet another computer was never the goal.



7. Changing your mind is a sign of intelligence



When Jobs announced the iPhone, it was a closed programming system to ensure that it was safe and reliable. A year later, he opened it up to third-party apps, and iPhone sales skyrocketed. This was a 180 degree reversal and a sign of intelligence and courage.



8. Engineers are artists



Jobs treated engineers like artists. They weren’t cogs in a machine whose output was measured in lines of code. Macintosh was an artistic expression by engineers whose palette was software and hardware design.



9. Price and value are not the same thing



No one ever bought a Macintosh based on price. Its true value became evident only when you factored in the lower requirements for support and training. Jobs didn’t fight on price, but he won on value.



10. But value isn’t enough



Many products are valuable, but if your product isn’t also unique or differentiated in some way, you have to compete on price. You can succeed this way — as Dell did, for example. But if you truly want to “dent the universe,” your product needs to be both unique and valuable.



11. Some things need to be believed to be seen



Innovators ignore naysayers to get the job done. The “experts” told Jobs he was wrong many times — for example, Macintosh, iPod, iPhone and Apple retail stores. It’s not that Jobs was always right, but sometimes, you need to believe in something in order to see it.



I hope that everyone has at least one chance to work for someone as brilliant as Steve Jobs. It won’t be easy, but what doesn’t end your career makes it stronger.

What’s the secret to a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/02/21/95-year-old-billionaire-charlie-munger-says-the-secret-to-a-long-and-happy-life-is-so-simple.html" class="">long, happy and successful life</a>? That seems to be a question we ask ourselves over and over.



<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/03/12/amazon-billionaire-jeff-bezos-explains-why-the-smartest-people-change-their-minds-often.html" class="">Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos</a>&nbsp;has shared his thoughts on this very topic&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwG_qR6XmDQ" class="">many times</a>&nbsp;— and he might just be onto something.



“When you are 80-years-old, and in a quiet moment of reflection narrating for only yourself the most personal version of your life story, the telling that will be most compact and meaningful will be the series of choices you have made,” Bezos said in his 2010&nbsp;<a href="https://www.princeton.edu/news/2010/05/30/2010-baccalaureate-remarks" class="">commencement speech</a>&nbsp;at Princeton University.



The purpose of his speech, called “We Are What We Choose,” was to emphasize the difference between gifts and choices: “Cleverness is a gift, kindness is a choice. Gifts are easy — they’re given after all. Choices can be hard. You can seduce yourself with your gifts if you’re not careful, and if you do, it’ll probably be to the detriment of your choices.”



In other words, no matter how successful you become, what you’ll end up caring about the most in hindsight isn’t the number of zeroes in your bank account, but it’s the choices you made to get where you are.



But without the benefit of hindsight, how can we tell if we’re on a path that we’ll be proud of when we look back on our lives 10, 20 or 30 years from now?



The constant struggle of making choices



In his talk, Bezos recounted the period of time in which he first came up with the idea to start an online bookstore business (which would later become what the entire world now knows as Amazon).



At the time, he knew that moving forward with the idea would be a very risky move.



Bezos even asked his boss, who he said was “brilliant” and “much admired,” for advice. He was told that although it “sounded like a very good idea, it would be an even better idea” if Bezos didn’t already have a good job.



“It really was a difficult choice, but ultimately, I decided I had to give it a shot. I didn’t think I’d regret trying and failing. And I suspected I would always be haunted by a decision to not try at all,” Bezos said. “After much consideration, I took the less safe path to follow my passion, and I’m proud of that choice.”The ‘perfect’ choice doesn’t exist



The truth in life is that we’ll all make choices we end up regretting. It’s called&nbsp;failure, and failure can be a good thing because it teaches us how to be better. But as we grow older, our goal should be to minimize the number of failures that lead to regret.



“In the end, we are our choices. Build yourself a great story,” he said towards the end of his speech.



To build a great story, Bezos offered 12 questions and urged everyone to think deeply about them:



<ol class="wp-block-list"><li>How will you use your gifts?</li><li>What choices will you make?</li><li>Will inertia be your guide, or will you follow your passions?</li><li>Will you follow dogma, or will you be original?</li><li>Will you choose a life of ease, or a life of service and adventure?</li><li>Will you wilt under criticism, or will you follow your convictions?</li><li>Will you bluff it out when you’re wrong, or will you apologize?</li><li>Will you guard your heart against rejection, or will you act when you fall in love?</li><li>Will you play it safe, or will you be a little bit swashbuckling?</li><li>When it’s tough, will you give up, or will you be relentless?</li><li>Will you be a cynic, or will you be a builder?</li><li>Will you be clever at the expense of others, or will you be kind?</li></ol>



While these questions don’t provide a foolproof recipe for happiness, they can guide us in making choices that will ultimately help us live a life we’re proud of.



Not all of us will end up reaching the same height of success as Bezos, a self-made billionaire and the richest person in the world. But there’s no reason we can’t — or shouldn’t — challenge ourselves to build a story worth telling.

The price of bitcoin&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/04/02/bitcoin-rallies-14percent-to-its-highest-level-since-november-last-year.html" class="">surged more than 15 percent</a>&nbsp;on Tuesday and briefly crossed the $5,000 mark for the first time since mid-November. It’s still well below the all-time high it hit in December 2017 of near $20,000.



Other virtual currencies saw sudden price jumps, too: Ether and XRP both rose around 7 percent.



Before you start buying cryptocurrency, though, consider the advice of&nbsp;<a href="https://creativeplanning.com/peter-mallouk/" class="">Peter Mallouk</a>, certified financial planner and president of wealth management firm&nbsp;<a href="https://creativeplanning.com/" class="">Creative Planning</a>: “What we’re going to see, most likely, is, we’re going to see cryptocurrencies collapse.”



There are so many types of virtual currencies — like litecoin, ethereum, ripple and, of course, bitcoin — that “there’s no way that even a fraction of them can survive,” Mallouk, who is also author of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-5-mistakes-every-investor-makes-and-how-to-avoid-them-peter-mallouk/1119952320" class="">“The 5 Mistakes Every Investor Makes and How to Avoid Them,”</a>&nbsp;tells CNBC Make It.&nbsp;



“Is it possible that maybe one or two will work out in the future? Sure it is.” But, he says, “in the meantime,” if you buy cryptocurrency, “you get no income. It’s not a real investment. It’s speculation.”



Instead, invest in “things that are going to pay you to own them,” he says. “Own real estate, where you’re collecting rent. Own stocks, where you’re collecting dividends. Own bonds, where you’re collecting yield.”



As a general rule of thumb, “You don’t want to own something that’s not going to pay you,” says Mallouk.



If you’re excited by blockchain, the technology behind cryptocurrency, there are ways to invest in that besides buying crypto, he adds: “There are companies that are very heavily investing in blockchain and you can buy those companies — companies like IBM and Accenture.”



And “companies like Walmart are using it to develop ways to run their inventory,” he adds. “That’s the way to play blockchain technology — not by trying to buy cryptocurrency.”



Keep in mind, he continues, that while “blockchain technology is real and you’ve got big companies like IBM and Accenture and others investing in it, that doesn’t mean that bitcoin is going to work out or ripple is going to work out,” says Mallouk. “The TV worked out, but everything that comes out of it, we don’t want to watch. Palm and Blackberry were fantastic, but Apple came in and took them out. He’s not the only expert who has warned against buying into digital currency.



In 2017, CNBC’s Jim Cramer said that bitcoin is&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2017/12/06/cramer-bitcoin-like-monopoly-money-better-off-gambling-in-vegas.html" class="">a pure gamble</a>&nbsp;and “kind of like Monopoly money. Obviously, there’s people who use it. If you ever say anything bad about it, there’s like this bitcoin mafia that comes after you. But it is an oddity that has nothing to do with us” as investors.



“It’s just pure gambling at this point,” the market expert continued on<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/squawk-box-us/" class="">“Squawk Box.”</a>&nbsp;“I mean, if you want to gamble, go to Vegas. Vegas is fabulous.”



And JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon said that bitcoin&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2017/09/12/jpmorgan-ceo-jamie-dimon-raises-flag-on-trading-revenue-sees-20-percent-fall-for-the-third-quarter.html" class="">“is a fraud”</a>&nbsp;at the Delivering Alpha conference presented by CNBC and Institutional Investor in 2017. “It’s just not a real thing, eventually it will be closed.”



He added, at a separate conference organized by Barclay, “It’s worse than tulip bulbs. It won’t end well.”

&#8220;There&#8217;s a reason why you never heard of it,&#8221; Cuban says, laughing, in a Amazon developer blog&nbsp;<a href="https://developer.amazon.com/blogs/alexa/post/0902e3c5-9649-47e5-b705-984666b85125/mark-cuban-voice-ambient-computing-are-the-future-and-why-developers-should-get-in-now">video</a>&nbsp;published Monday. &#8220;It it was a great name. But, um, there was a time to quit.&#8221;



The same holds true in business, says the tech entrepreneur. So how do you know when your business isn&#8217;t working?



&#8220;When you don&#8217;t have any customers? That&#8217;s your answer,&#8221; Cuban says. That&#8217;s when you know what you are making is not going to become a successful business.



&#8220;One of the challenges of being an entrepreneur is that we all lie to ourselves. We are the best. We are the fastest. The greatest. The this-er, the that-est,&#8221; Cuban&nbsp;<a href="https://developer.amazon.com/blogs/alexa/post/0902e3c5-9649-47e5-b705-984666b85125/mark-cuban-voice-ambient-computing-are-the-future-and-why-developers-should-get-in-now">says in the video</a>. &#8220;If you find yourself always describing your company and how you are different in terms of &#8216;er-s&#8217; and &#8216;est-s,&#8217; you have got issues and you are probably lying to yourself.



&#8220;You have to be brutally honest. You have to ask yourself: If it wasn&#8217;t me, if I was on the outside looking in, what would I say about this company? And if you are not able to do that, that&#8217;s a bigger problem.&#8221;



Having customers is the difference between being an inventor or maker and a successful business owner.



&#8220;The reality is there are a lot of great products and services that are undiscovered&#8230;. Because it&#8217;s one thing to do something great. It is a whole other thing to &#8230; be able to market and sell it,&#8221; Cuban says.



But just because what you are working on is not going to be a successful business does not mean it is not worthwhile, Cuban says.



&#8220;Everybody defines success differently. I have always told people that if you can wake up in the morning with a smile on your face, excited about your day, knowing it is going to be a good day, you&#8217;re successful. And so in terms of your business, you have got to live at some level right, but if you love what you are doing&#8230; it is not work,&#8221; Cuban says.



For example, before Cuban co-founded his first company, AudioNet (which became Broadcast.net and sold to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/02/09/mark-cuban-reveals-3-secrets-for-growing-a-successful-business.html">Yahoo for $5.7 billion in April 2000)</a>, he learned how to code.



&#8220;Early on, I had to teach myself how to program&#8230;and I would start writing these applications for customers. And I would start working on it&#8230;and I would look up and I had been sitting there for 24 to 26 hours not realizing that you know, I hadn&#8217;t moved this whole time. I loved what i was doing&#8221; Cuban says.



&#8220;I was sleeping six guys, living six guys in a three-bedroom apartment &#8230;&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2017/07/05/how-mark-cuban-became-a-billionaire.html">I had a hole in the floorboard of my car</a>. But I knew that there was a light at the end of the tunnel as long as I just kept on getting better at what I did. But had I not had the financial success, I still would have loved it.&#8221;

overdue, but was important to put us back on track,” he noted. 



The 2018 Africa
Investment Forum attracted 1,943 participants representing 87 countries, and

So how does the billionaire book lover remember what he reads? The trick, he says, is context.



&#8220;If you read enough, there&#8217;s a similarity between things that make it easy, because this thing is like this other thing. If you have a broad framework, then you have a place to put everything,&#8221; Gates says in the Quartz video, &#8220;How Bill Gates remembers what he reads.&#8221;



When you come to a topic with a base layer of understanding, then fitting in new tidbits of information makes them easier to remember.



&#8220;So, incremental knowledge is so much easier to maintain in a rich way,&#8221; Gates says. &#8220;At first it is very daunting but then as you get the kind of scope, then all these pieces fit in.&#8221;



If you want to learn about science, for example, Gates says reading the history of scientists and reading about the progress they made can give you the context or framework to help you remember the details.



&#8220;So you have the timeline, or you have the map or you have the branches of science and what&#8217;s known and what&#8217;s not known,&#8221; Gates says in the Quartz interview.



Reading is more than a pastime for Gates. In 2017, Gates told Time that reading is &#8220;absolutely&#8221; essential to success.



&#8220;You don&#8217;t really start getting old until you stop learning,&#8221; Gates told Time. &#8220;Every book teaches me something new or helps me see things differently. I was lucky to have parents who encouraged me to read. Reading fuels a sense of curiosity about the world, which I think helped drive me forward in my career and in the work that I do now with my foundation.&#8221;



Gates is rather fastidious in his reading habits: He always finishes a book he starts, whether he agrees with it or not.



&#8220;I refuse to stop reading a book in the middle, even if I don&#8217;t like it,&#8221;&nbsp;<a href="http://time.com/4786837/bill-gates-books-reading/">Gates told Time</a>. &#8220;And the more I dislike a book, the more time I take to write margin notes. That means I sometimes spend more time reading a book that I can&#8217;t stand than a book that I love.&#8221;



And if material he is reading doesn&#8217;t make sense within his existing understanding of a topic, he will actively seek out an explanation.



&#8220;So it&#8217;s fun to say, okay, this is where this belongs and does this contradict something I knew before? And I better look that up, I better figure it out,&#8221; Gates tells Quartz.

I worked at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/09/12/ex-apple-engineer-ken-kocienda-what-it-was-like-to-pitch-steve-jobs.html">Apple</a>&nbsp;from 1983 to 1987, and then from 1995 to 1997. Although I refer to these stints as &#8220;two tours of duty,&#8221; it was a privilege and an honor to work there. In many ways, I am who I am and where I am because of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/10/02/steve-jobs-heres-what-most-people-get-wrong-about-focus.html">Steve Jobs</a>&nbsp;and Apple.



One day sometime in 1984, Jobs appeared in my cubicle with a man I didn&#8217;t know. He didn&#8217;t introduce him — Jobs wasn&#8217;t long on social niceties. Instead, he asked, &#8220;What do you think of a company called Knoware?&#8221;



Most people would have taken a long pause before giving an answer. Would I be punished for giving my true (and harsh) opinions? Or should I give a neutral and safe answer?



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">I went with the truth</h4>



I told Jobs that the company&#8217;s products were mediocre, boring, and simplistic and that the company was not strategic for us. After all, they didn&#8217;t take advantage of the Mac graphical user interface and other advanced features.

After my diatribe, Jobs said to me, &#8220;I want you to meet the CEO of Knoware, Archie McGill.&#8221; I shook his hand, and Steve said to him, &#8220;See? That&#8217;s what I told you.&#8221;



Thank you, Steve.



If I had said nice things about the crappy Knoware products, Jobs would have, at a minimum, decided that I was clueless, and that would have limited my career at Apple. At worst, he would have said that I was shit and fired me later that day, if not on the spot.



In the Macintosh Division, you had to prove yourself every day, or Jobs got rid of you. He demanded excellence and kept you at the top of your game. It wasn&#8217;t easy to work for him; it was sometimes unpleasant and always scary, but it drove many of us to do the finest work of our careers.



I wouldn&#8217;t trade working for him for any job I&#8217;ve ever had — and I don&#8217;t know anyone in the Macintosh Division who would.



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Lying won&#8217;t get you anywhere</h4>



Here&#8217;s what I learned from my experience at Apple and working with Jobs:



<ol class="wp-block-list"><li>Tell the truth. Honesty is a test of your competence and character. You need intelligence to recognize what is true, and you need strength to speak it.</li><li>The wiser the person, the more they yearn for the truth. Telling people that their product is good in order to be kind or positive doesn&#8217;t help them improve it — much less impress or fool people like Jobs.</li><li>Honesty is not only better, it&#8217;s also easier than lying. There&#8217;s only one truth, so being consistent is simple if you&#8217;re honest. If you are not honest, you have to concoct a lie and then keep track of what you said.</li></ol>

Guy Kawasaki: At Apple, ‘you had to prove yourself every day, or Steve Jobs got rid of you’

Albert Einstein didn&#8217;t speak until he was three, but by age 12, he was already studying calculus. So it comes as no surprise that he would go on to revolutionize the world of science. Yet the question still remains: How did he become such a genius?



For years, researchers have been trying to find the answer. A&nbsp;<a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(05)70592-4/fulltext">1999 study in the Lancet</a>&nbsp;that analyzed 14 photographs of Einstein&#8217;s brain found that one brain region was completely absent, allowing his parietal lobe (which holds several areas that are important in language processing) to take up more space. Other&nbsp;<a href="https://www.seattletimes.com/nation-world/einsteinrsquos-brain-really-was-bigger-than-most-peoplersquos/">studies of his brain</a>&nbsp;found that it was larger than most others.



But in a new book, &#8220;<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Formula-Unlocking-Secrets-Successful-Children/dp/1946885061">The Formula: Unlocking the Secrets to Raising Highly Successful Children</a>,&#8221; award-winning journalist Tatsha Robertson and Harvard economist Ronald F. Ferguson explore the how parents of successful children contributed to their achievements and the actionable insights we can glean about their child-rearing.



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">The &#8216;Formula&#8217; for successful parenting</h4>



Over the course of 15 years, Robertson and Ferguson analyzed 200 high-achieving adults and their parents. They also studied the childhoods of well-known figures, from Anne, Susan and Janet Wojcicki (who have been called the &#8220;Silicon Valley sisters&#8221;) to Albert Einstein.



In the research, a clear pattern emerged: &#8220;The approaches that parents of high achievers adopted, beginning in the earliest years of life, bore real and striking similarities, despite those parents&#8217; widely divergent backgrounds and life circumstances.



That pattern, which Robertson and Ferguson call the &#8220;Formula,&#8221; consists of eight roles: The Early Learning Partner, the Flight Engineer, the Fixer, the Revealer, the Philosopher, the Model, the Negotiator and the GPS Navigational Voice.



Einstein&#8217;s parents, Pauline and Hermann, were very supportive in all eight roles, Robertson tells <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/make-it/">CNBC Make It</a>, but they were particularly skilled at being Negotiators and Revealers.



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">The Negotiator</h4>



Negotiatorsnurture and encourage their children&#8217;s independence, but they also intervene when necessary.



For negotiators, quitting is never an option. &#8220;Once the choice is made, sticking with it for a while becomes a non-negotiable requirement. The child isn&#8217;t allowed to go back on the agreement,&#8221; writes Robertson and Ferguson. Pauline was very strict on this rule.



In 1884, a frisky young Einstein decided to throw a tantrum — and then a chair — at his violin tutor. Instead of scolding him or having him quit violin altogether, Pauline decided to hire a new tutor.



She had discovered early on that her son often struggled to concentrate, and as an accomplished pianist herself, she understood that instrumental learning was helpful in developing discipline and focus. The new tutor was effective, and Albert&#8217;s concentration improved.



&#8220;He mastered the violin and it ended up being a lifelong passion for him,&#8221; Ferguson tells&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/make-it/">CNBC Make It</a>. In fact, &#8220;[Einstein] said that some of his best theoretical physics ideas came during periods when he was playing the violin. We might not have had the theory of relativity if Pauline wasn&#8217;t persistent in making her son play the violin.&#8221;



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">The Revealer</h4>



Revealers introduce new ideas and possibilities to their children — things they can learn about, places they can go and people they can be. They encourage their children to be persistent in finding solutions to problems — and, when doing so, to be &#8220;curious, disciplined and and self-reliant.&#8221;



Even though Einstein hated school, his parents knew that it wasn&#8217;t because he had a learning disability — it was simply because he wasn&#8217;t learning muchat school. Their solution was to create a stimulating learning environment at home, where they provided him with books and toys that supplemented his interests.



As Einstein grew older, his curiosity was further fueled by Thursday lunches at home, where his parents allowed him to sit at the table with family members and scientist friends. &#8220;His uncle would be at the table, throwing tricky algebra questions to Einstein,&#8221; says Robertson. &#8220;Einstein would hoot every time he got a correct answer.&#8221;



These lunchtime seminars allowed him to interact with worldly adults who challenged him with new ideas and concepts in math, science and technology. &#8220;One young man, in particular, ended up becoming a math tutor for Albert,&#8221; says Ferguson. &#8220;And by the time [Albert] was 12 or 13, the tutor said that he was having a hard time keeping up because Albert&#8217;s skills had surpassed his own.&#8221;



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Child-rearing is an art</h4>



It isn&#8217;t easy to nurture a genius, let alone raise one. In their case studies, the authors found that every child who went on to be successful had unique stories about how their were raised, but their plots were all the same: They had parents who made very strategic parenting choices.



Einstein was raised to embrace humility and be accepting of his failures, and it motivated him to explore the things he was passionate about. &#8220;It&#8217;s not that I&#8217;m so smart,&#8221; he once said. &#8220;It&#8217;s just that I stay with problems longer.&#8221;

How do you raise a genius? Researchers say they’ve found the secret to successful parenting

The <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/03/11/tim-berners-lee-the-web-is-dysfunctional-with-perverse-incentives.html">World Wide Web</a> is 30 years old today.



Three decades ago — on March 12, 1989, to be exact — British computer scientist Sir Tim Berners-Lee submitted his proposal for what&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/02/09/10-ways-the-web-and-internet-have-transformed-our-lives.html">would become the World Wide Web</a>&nbsp;to his boss at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).



Today, Berners-Lee is considered an internet pioneer. However, the feedback that Berners-Lee received from his boss for the revolutionary idea in 1989 was not quite as exuberant as you might expect.



&#8220;Vague, but exciting…&#8221; was the simple, and somewhat understated,&nbsp;<a href="http://info.cern.ch/Proposal.html">hand-written reaction</a>&nbsp;scribbled on Berners-Lee&#8217;s proposal by his boss at CERN at the time, Mike Sendall.



Happily, Sendall approved Berners-Lee&#8217;s proposal and, a year later, Sendall gave Berners-Lee permission to buy a high-performance NeXT computer (built by Steve Jobs, after he left Apple, and designed for technical and scientific work) that would become<a href="http://collection.sciencemuseum.org.uk/objects/co8232360/next-cube-computer-1990-personal-computer">&nbsp;the world&#8217;s first web server</a>.



Berners-Lee had submitted his idea in <a href="https://www.w3.org/History/1989/proposal.html">a paper</a> titled &#8220;Information Management: A Proposal,&#8221; in which he argued for the creation of an information management system he described as &#8220;a large hypertext database with typed links.&#8221; The idea was to offer universal access to use the then-nascent internet, not just to communicate, but to store and access vast troves of online documents and data.



While the internet itself already existed in 1989 — in the form of large networks of connected computers — Berners-Lee&#8217;s proposal is now credited as the first step toward the World Wide Web as we know it today. The &#8220;web&#8221; (as it&#8217;s now commonly called) refers to the way we typically navigate the internet by clicking on hypertext to visit websites and access various types of data online.



Berners-Lee built the world&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href="http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html">first website</a>&nbsp;in 1991, using the same NeXT computer to create a page simply titled &#8220;World Wide Web,&#8221; featuring links to additional pages with information on himself, his team of scientists and the history of their project, among other things.



The website&#8217;s landing page described the World Wide Web as &#8220;a wide-area hypermedia information retrieval initiative aiming to give universal access to a large universe of documents.&#8221; Today, we just call it &#8220;the web.&#8221;



Meanwhile, Berners-Lee himself has become fairly outspoken about the direction the web has taken in recent years. On Monday, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/03/11/tim-berners-lee-the-web-is-dysfunctional-with-perverse-incentives.html">he published a letter</a> saying the web is no longer a &#8220;force for good&#8221; and laying out three &#8220;sources of dysfunction&#8221; on the modern internet. Those include malicious online behavior like government hacking and online bullying, as well as companies&#8217; pursuit of advertising revenue that can result in the spread of misinformation and the exploitation of users&#8217; personal information.

With increasing talk of <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/09/17/wef-machines-are-going-to-perform-more-tasks-than-humans-by-2025.html">job disruption and automation</a>, it&#8217;s important to think about the <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/03/01/hr-experts-share-the-skills-employees-will-most-need-in-the-future.html">skills that will be most in demand in the future</a>.



<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/?symbol=MSFT">Microsoft</a>, in its latest research, defined those as digital skills, analytical abilities and continuous learning capabilities. In particular, the tasks that require strong analytic abilities will call for a creative approach, explained Kevin Wo, Microsoft&#8217;s managing director for Singapore.



&#8220;I think there&#8217;s a need for them to learn about skills around design thinking,&#8221; Wo said of employees.



&#8220;Design thinking&#8221; is a term for a particular method of problem solving, which dictates that individuals should try and get into a customer&#8217;s shoes to generate practical, user-friendly solutions. That could mean creating a new technology or product, such as Apple&#8217;s iPhone. But the strategy can — and should — also be applied to other job functions, design thinking specialist Kasia Miaskiewicz told&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/make-it/">CNBC Make It</a>.



&#8220;You can apply it anywhere,&#8221; said Miaskiewicz, a director at UBS Evolve, the Swiss bank&#8217;s center for design thinking and innovation. &#8220;As long as there is a user, a recipient – and there always is – there&#8217;s always an opportunity to apply design thinking.&#8221;



Speaking at a recent careers conference in Singapore, Miaskiewicz said the strategy can be broken down into four key steps.



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">What is?</h4>



First up, you need to think about the problem you are trying to solve and make sure you frame it correctly by asking the right questions, Miaskiewicz explained.



&#8220;It&#8217;s all about asking the right questions and solving for the right problems,&#8221; said Miaskiewicz, who is a director at UBS Evolve, the Swiss bank&#8217;s center for design thinking and innovation.



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">What if?</h4>



Next, you should consider the potential solutions that will reduce frustrations or &#8220;key friction points&#8221; for users. Miaskiewicz said that means closely observing customers to see how you can improve their experience.



&#8220;The way you develop that part is really watching your customers. From that step a lot of ideas will start popping up,&#8221; she noted.



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">What wows?</h4>



At that point several possible ideas should start coming to mind, said Miaskiewicz. Not all will be feasible, she noted, but you should try to be as open-minded as possible and avoid thinking too much about the &#8220;cannots.&#8221;



&#8220;If you start with constraints – time, cost etc. – your ideas of tomorrow will look the same as those of today,&#8221; said Miaskiewicz.



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">What works?</h4>



Ultimately, Miaskiewicz said, the workable solution will be the one that ticks the boxes for three key criteria: execution, economics and customer. Put another way, the idea that is feasible for your company to create, makes sense financially and pleases the client.



You can then start experimenting with prototypes and measuring their success before creating a final product, she noted.



&#8220;Following that process really helps you get into users&#8217; shoes and create the right solutions to the most frustrating problems,&#8221; Miaskiewicz noted.

<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/?symbol=FB">Facebook</a> currently has a market capitalization of $463 billion. But what&#8217;s Facebook worth to you?



A&nbsp;<a href="http://web.stanford.edu/~gentzkow/research/facebook.pdf">study released in January</a>&nbsp;found out how much people would need to be paid to deactivate their Facebook accounts for four weeks: &#8220;The median valuation was around $100 dollars a month,&#8221; Stanford economics professor,&nbsp;<a href="https://gentzkow.people.stanford.edu/">Matthew Gentzkow</a>, who co-authored the study&nbsp;<a href="https://www.recode.net/2019/2/27/18243546/facebook-study-stanford-gentzkow-wellbeing-politcal-polarization">told Recode</a>.



&#8220;But there&#8217;s a lot of spread,&#8221; said Gentzkow. &#8220;There&#8217;s a lot of people all the way from $0 to $100, and then a lot of people who gave really big numbers. Sort of like, &#8216;You couldn&#8217;t pay me enough to give up Facebook.&#8217;



&#8220;I can&#8217;t say conclusively, &#8216;Has Facebook proven good or bad for society?&#8217; [but] what is clear is that the people who use it value it a lot,&#8221; Gentzkow said.



The study, which was published in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nber.org/papers/w25514">National Bureau of Economic Research</a>, was authored by four professors, three from Stanford and one from New York University. For the study, researchers recruited 2,844 Facebook users and asked some of them to deactivate their Facebook account for four weeks, starting shortly after the 2018 U.S. midterm elections on Nov. 6. Some were not paid to deactivate (the control group) and other were paid.



Fifty-eight percent of study participants were willing to deactivate for less than $102.



And for the average person in the paid group, deactivating Facebook freed up to an hour per day of their time, the study says.



Being off Facebook also generally contributed to a better subjective well-being, the study found.



&#8220;Deactivation caused small but significant improvements in well-being, and in particular on self-reported happiness, life satisfaction, depression, and anxiety,&#8221; the study said.



&#8220;I was way less stressed. I wasn&#8217;t attached to my phone as much as I was before,&#8221; one study participant reported. &#8220;And I found I didn&#8217;t really care so much about things that were happening [online] because I was more focused on my own life&#8230; I felt more content. I think I was in a better mood generally. I thought I would miss seeing everyone&#8217;s day-to-day activities&#8230; I really didn&#8217;t miss it at all.&#8221;



Another said the time that had been devoted to Facebook was redistributed to offline activities: &#8220;I realized how much time I was wasting. I now have time for other things. I&#8217;ve been reading books and playing the piano which I used to do daily until the phone took over.&#8221;



For some, however, the time off of Facebook was isolating. &#8220;I was shut off from those [online] conversations, or just from being an observer of what people are doing or thinking. . . I didn&#8217;t like it at first at all, I felt very cut off from people that I like. . . I didn&#8217;t like it because I spend a lot of time by myself anyway, I&#8217;m kind of an introvert, so I use Facebook in a social aspect in a very big way,&#8221; one study participant responded.



&#8220;This is one study of many on this topic and it should be considered that way,&#8221; a Facebook spokesperson tells&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/make-it/">CNBC Make It</a>. &#8220;Our teams have been working hard on these issues. We&#8217;ve introduced several new tools so people can take greater control of their experience and made product updates to increase the number of meaningful conversations and connections people have on Facebook. We have more work to do, but we&#8217;re making steady progress.&#8221;



Those tools include controls allowing users to&nbsp;<a href="https://newsroom.fb.com/news/2018/08/manage-your-time/">manage the time they spend on Facebook</a>&nbsp;and a privacy check up, which lets users to review and change the settings that determine who you share what with, the Facebook spokesperson tells CNBC Make It.



The Facebook spokesperson also pointed out some study results were positive: &#8220;Our results leave little doubt that Facebook produces large benefits for its users,&#8221; the conclusion of the study says. &#8220;Any discussion of social media&#8217;s downsides should not obscure the basic fact that it fulfills deep and widespread needs.&#8221; These comments were &#8220;encouraging,&#8221; said the spokesperson.



Benefits mentioned in the study include Facebook being a source of news and information, a source of entertainment, a tool to help organize events or groups or a social outlet for those who feel otherwise isolated.

So Bezos has a system to organize his time.



&#8220;I try to organize my personal time so that I live mostly about 2 to 3 years out,&#8221; Bezos said at the Yale Club in New York City in February, according to a transcript from&nbsp;<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeff-bezos-blue-origin-wings-club-presentation-transcript-2019-2">Business Insider</a>.



Bezos has enormous goals: He wants Amazon &#8220;to be Earth&#8217;s most customer-centric company,&#8221;&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1018724/000119312518121161/d456916dex991.htm">according to his 2018 annual letter</a>, and wants&nbsp;<a href="https://www.blueorigin.com/our-mission">Blue Origin</a>&nbsp;to help create a way for the solar system to support 1 trillion people (&#8220;then we&#8217;d have 1,000 Mozarts, and 1,000 Einsteins,&#8221; he said at the Yale Club).



And &#8220;vision is absolutely important,&#8221; he said. But &#8220;we&#8217;ve got to get started.&#8221;



Vision, he says, &#8220;doesn&#8217;t deserve your day-to-day attention. You need a vision, then, that&#8217;s a touchstone: It&#8217;s something you can always come back to if you ever get confused. But mostly, your time should be spent on things that are happening today, this year, maybe in the next 2 or 3 years,&#8221; Bezos said, according to the transcript.



While there may be a few goals five to seven years in the future that are on Bezos&#8217; mind, he sets his day-to-day schedule based on what he is looking to happen in two to three years.



His top leaders at Amazon also work on a similar timeframe.



&#8220;We&#8217;ll announce our Amazon quarterly results and [people will say], &#8216;Great quarter, congratulations!&#8217; And then I say, &#8216;Thank you,'&#8221; Bezos said. &#8220;But what I really think about is [how] that quarter was kind of baked and done 2 or 3 years ago, and right now the senior executives at Amazon are working on a quarter that&#8217;s going to happen in 2021, 2022.&#8221;



&#8220;I would always encourage people to hold, powerfully, a vision and be so stubborn of it. Don&#8217;t let anybody move you off of your vision,&#8221; Bezos said. &#8220;But put the vast majority of your energy and attention on things that are in a kind of 2- to 3-year timeframe.&#8221;
