<p>The Governor of the National Bank of Rwanda, John Rwangombwa has announced that Rwanda&#8217;s monetary policy rate will be maintained at 7.5 per cent. This decision follows a review of the economy from November 2023 to February 2024. The last MPC meeting in November 2023 also maintained the lending rate at 7.5 per cent. with the last increment in August 2023 of 50 basis points. Inflation currently stands at 5 per cent, falling within the target band, with the decline in core inflation attributed to improved rainfall and softer energy prices and high sectorial performance. The Governor noted that global developments could influence future monetary policy outcomes.</p>

<p>On May 25th, the 40th EAC Ordinary Council ministers considered and adopted the budget estimates amounting to about $90million for the financial year 2021/2022, to facilitate the activities of the EAC, organs and institutions. The East African Legislative Assembly is now worried that the 2021/22 financial year budget tabled in the House is far below what is needed to accomplish the Community’s agenda and may impact DRC&#8217;s entry into the bloc. <p>East African Community calls for sanctions on Burundi and South Sudan following the chronic defaulting of annual payments by the member states, resulting in liquidity challenges. <p>The launch of a regional electronic cargo and driver tracking system which was scheduled to start today (13th August) as one of the measures aimed at preventing further spread of the COVID-19 pandemic has been postponed. Moreover, on June 30th, the East African Legislative Assembly passed a motion to censure South Sudan and Burundi for defaulting on their annual payments and it also recommended that the Council of Ministers take further action against the two countries.
