<p>NAIROBI (Reuters) &#8211; Fifteen people died and 70 were injured when fire swept through a market and nearby homes in central Nairobi in the early hours of Thursday.</p>
<p>The blaze broke out in a timber yard, said Nairobi regional coordinator Kangethe Thuku, a senior official.</p>
<p>It started at around 2:30 a.m. and spread through Gikomba market and nearby apartments and shanties before being contained around 90 minutes later, according to Emergency Service St John Ambulance.</p>
<p>Located in the densely crowded downtown part of the city, Gikomba is the heartbeat of a huge informal market, selling everything from second-hand clothes to hardware. It has been damaged several times by fire.</p>
<p>Thuku said the death toll from Thursday’s blaze had reached 15.</p>
<p>“About five&#8230; arrived dead in the hospital but we still have about nine bodies in the burning buildings because we want to confirm and ensure the safety of those buildings,” he said.</p>
<p>Some victims were taken to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) whilst a 15th fatality was at Mama Lucy Hospital.</p>
<p>A further 70 people were injured in the fire, whose cause had yet to be established, he said</p>
<p>A Reuters photographer saw bodies being brought out from a building and people sifting through ashen wreckage as smoke rose from the site.</p>
<p>The acting Chief Executive of KNH said the hospital was on alert for more victims. “In case we have any more, we are ready for them,” said Thomas Mutie.</p>

<p>A massive fire raged through the night at a 24-storey block of flats in central London on Wednesday, with multiple fatalities reported.</p>
<p>London Fire Brigade said over 200 firefighters were on the scene to tackle the major blaze at a tower block in north Kensington, with 40 fire engines also sent to the location.</p>
<p>The fire was first reported shortly after 1.15 a.m. BST, with the Metropolitan Police confirming people were being treated for &#8220;a range of injuries&#8221;.</p>

<p>British media reported people trapped in the upper floors desperately screaming for help as the fire spread through the building, which contains 120 homes.</p>
<p>A police update at around 4.00 a.m. BST said Grenfell Tower &#8220;residents continue to be evacuated&#8221;.</p>

<p>London ambulance service reported at 6.15 a.m. BST that 30 patients have been taken to five hospitals following the incident at Lancaster West Estate.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our priority is to assess the level and nature of injuries and ensure those in the most need are treated first and taken to hospital,&#8221; Stuart Crichton, assistant director of operations at London Ambulance Service, said in a statement.</p>
<p>London Mayor Sadiq Khan, issued a statement and described the flumes as a &#8220;major incident&#8221;.</p>

Huge fire engulfs London tower block, fatalities reported

<p>South Africa&#8217;s National Consumer Commission (NCC) has launched a probe into the local unit of U.S. automaker Ford over the recall of 4,500 Kuga SUVs after dozens of reports of the vehicles catching fire spontaneously.</p>
<p>&#8220;The National Consumer Commission says that it has instituted an investigation into the activities of Ford Motor Company Southern Africa and its dealerships, for alleged prohibited conduct,&#8221; the commission said in a statement posted on its website.</p>
<p>&#8220;The NCC received more than 130 complaints against Ford SA relating to various issues, including the combusting of Kuga vehicles, since December last year,&#8221; it said.</p>
<p>Ford could not immediately be reached for comment.</p>

S.Africa&#39;s consumer watchdog to probe Ford after Kuga recall

<p>U.S. auto-maker Ford will recall 4,500 of its Kuga SUV models after dozens of reports of the vehicles catching fire spontaneously, the head of the company&#8217;s South Africa unit said on Monday.</p>
<p>In a joint statement with the National Consumer Commission, Ford&#8217;s Southern Africa President and chief executive Jeff Nemeth said the company could confirm 39 incidents of the cars catching fire, as well as one death, which Nemeth said was not directly linked to the defect.</p>

<p>Ethiopian opposition activists have demanded news on the fate of six of their leaders and other inmates held in a high-security prison that was wrecked by a massive fire over the weekend.</p>

<p>The government has said 21 inmates died in the blaze that ripped through the Qilinto complex on Saturday &#8211; but has not named any of the victims.</p>
<p>Another two prisoners were shot dead as they tried to escape the compound on the outskirts of the capital Addis Ababa, the government added in a brief statement two days after the fire, again stopping short of identifying them.</p>
<p>The opposition Oromo Federalist Congress said on Tuesday it had received no news of six of its leaders, including Deputy Chairman Bekele Gerba and Assistant General Secretary Dejene Tafa, who were arrested in December on suspicion of inciting protests.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our entire leadership is being held in that place and we have no idea what has happened to them,&#8221; the OFC&#8217;s Assistant Deputy Chairman, Mulatu Gemechu, told Reuters.</p>
<p>&#8220;The government has a responsibility to explain to the public, no less their families. We have no idea why it is taking that long,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>The government did not immediately respond to his statement.</p>
<p>Dissidents say most recent inmates are ethnic Oromos held for taking part in demonstrations over land rights and alleged rights abuses that have rocked one of Africa&#8217;s fastest growing economies since last year.</p>
<p>The United States last week said it was gravely concerned about the use of excessive force against protesters. Human Rights Watch said in June at least 400 demonstrators had been killed by security forces.</p>
<p>Ethiopia&#8217;s government &#8211; a major ally of the United States in the fight against militants in neighbouring Somalia &#8211; disputes the death toll and says the protests are being staged illegally, stoked by rebel groups and dissidents based oveseas.</p>
<p>Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said last week his administration would carry out &#8220;deep-rooted&#8221; reforms and pledged to address grievances, though he warned of measures if protests escalated into violence.﻿</p>
