South Africa’s Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan revealed at a CNBC Africa-Discovery Invest Exclusive Insights event that late Thursday evening he received a letter from South African Revenue Service (SARS) Commissioner Tom Moyane about the hostage drama which alleged unfolded at its premises.

According to Gordhan, Moyane said that there was an alleged incident which he would be looking into.

Gordhan said he made it clear in Parliament and elsewhere “that that kind of rank intimidation of a senior, very-seasoned tax official in South Africa for whatever purpose is completely unacceptable to South Africa and all its citizens and is disgraceful to the institution if those facts are true.”

He assured the audience comprised of CEOs and general managers that he would get to the bottom of the facts and make them public. Gordhan also revealed that he is obtaining legal advice on “how we stop, if this is the behaviour there [at SARS], how do we stop this behaviour into the future”.
