Download logoToday, the governments of Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana began COVID-19 vaccination campaigns aimed at protecting healthcare workers; This week’s first vaccinations happen as a further 11 million COVAX doses are expected to be delivered over the next seven days; Publication of the allocation of the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine to 142 of COVAX’s participating economies, to be delivered between now and the end of May, is anticipated tomorrow. As the global rollout of COVAX vaccines accelerates, the first COVID-19 vaccination campaigns in Africa using COVAX doses began today in Ghana and Côte d&#39;Ivoire. These campaigns are the among the first to use doses provided by the COVAX Facility’s Gavi COVAX Advanced Market Commitment (AMC).  The AMC is the COVAX Facility’s mechanism to provide donor-funded vaccines to lower-income countries. The campaigns in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire follow deliveries to both countries last week with Ghana taking delivery of 600,000 doses on February 24 and Côte d’Ivoire 504,000 doses two days later. Both countries received the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine licensed and manufactured by the Serum Institute of India (SII). The vaccine, branded COVISHIELD, was granted Emergency Use Listing (EUL) by the World Health Organization on February 15. H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana said: &#8220;COVID-19 has changed the world. It has cost lives, battered health systems, and damaged livelihoods. But, through these challenges, we have seen the best of humanity exemplified through strong multilateral cooperation. Ghana welcomes the arrival of the first doses of COVID-19 vaccines through the COVAX AMC as a pathway to ending the acute phase of the pandemic. To maximise the public health benefit of the vaccine, the first doses will be prioritized for health and essential workers, and other at-risk groups. This important milestone will allow Ghana to get back to business, and build back our economy even stronger than before.&#8221;  The deliveries mark the start of what will be the largest, most rapid and complex global rollout of vaccines in history. In total, COVAX aims to deliver at least 2 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines by the end of 2021, including at least 1.3 billion to the 92 economies eligible for support through the COVAX AMC. Confirmation of first-round allocations, covering the majority of the COVAX Facility participants, will be published 2 March 2021. COVAX doses to date have been delivered by SII to India, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, while Pfizer-BioNTech has delivered doses to the Republic of Korea. More deliveries by these two manufacturers are planned in the coming days, with 11 million doses in total planned to be delivered over the next seven days. In addition, AstraZeneca is set to commence shipments this week. COVAX, the overarching effort to accelerate development and access to COVID vaccines, is co-led by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and the World Health Organization (WHO) working in partnership with UNICEF as well as the World Bank, manufacturers and civil society organizations, and others. &#8220;This is a day many of us have been dreaming of and working for more than 12 months,&#8221; said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. &#8220;It&#39;s gratifying to see the fruit of that labour. But success is still to come. This is only the beginning of what COVAX was set up to achieve. We have a lot left to do to realize our vision to start vaccination in all countries within the first 100 days of the year. There are just 40 days left.&#8221; “As vaccination begins in Côte D’Ivoire, less than a year after COVID-19 was characterized as a global pandemic, I am filled with confidence, and I am sure that through COVAX and international solidarity we will be able to reach the most at-risk everywhere. Global equitable access to life-saving vaccines is the surest way to save lives and rebuild economies. I would like to thank all donors and also the leadership of the G7 group of nations. Nowadays vaccine policy is the best economic policy,” said José Manuel Barroso, Chair of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.   “The last year has been a dark one for families all over the world, but the rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines provided a hopeful light at the end of the tunnel. This proves what we can accomplish when we all – the private sector, UN and development agencies, governments, donors, and other partners – work as one.” “This is a historic day in the global fight against COVID-19. For months WHO teams in the region and partners have been supporting countries to plan and prepare for the complex challenges of such a massive vaccination campaign. DHL Industrial Projects supports Dunakeszi Járműjavító Kft, owned by TMH International AG and Magyar Vagon Zrt, with the transport of passenger coaches from Hungary to Egypt; the order includes the transport of 676 coaches, which will be delivered over the course of the next 32 months; the team is facilitating end-to-end transport including packaging, customs clearance, and pre-carriage. DHL Industrial Projects, a unit of DHL Global (www.DPDHL.com) Forwarding that manages complex project logistics, deep sea chartering activity and heavy-lift cargo, is supporting Dunakeszi Járműjavító Kft with the transportation of the largest order of rolling stock in the history of Hungary. In total, 676 coaches are being transferred from the production site in Dunakeszi, Hungary, to Egypt within a period of 32 months starting from 10th February. DHL will manage the end-to-end transport of the coaches, each weighing 48 tons and measuring 24.5 metres in length, as well as 4.5 meters in height. Packaged for export, the coaches are transported via rail to the port of Koper, Slovenia, where DHL is integrating the cargo via its charter carriers. From there DHL will deliver the cargo via sea directly onto the railway network at the port of Alexandria in Egypt. But harnessed strategically, Africa’s oil and gas industry can power a better future for Africa. Are calls to “keep it in the ground” really in Africa’s best interests? Do a Google search for “Help Africa,” and you know how many results you’ll get? 1.7 BILLION. “Help children in Africa.” “African hunger and how to help” “Save Africa from climate change.” There’s even a strategy for that last one: Keep Africa’s petroleum resources in the ground. The reasoning goes, if we produce fewer fossil fuels, we’ll emit less carbon and be better protected from climate change. The international community is embracing that idea. BlackRock and Royal Bank of Scotland said they’re moving away from investments that support fossil fuel production. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and the International Energy Agency go even further. Seeing how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected oil markets, they say now is a golden opportunity to phase out fossil fuels and usher in an era of renewable resources, freeing developing countries in particular from “dirty energy sources.” So much helping??????? OK, Global Community, here’s how I’d suggest helping Africa. Stop. Stop trying to apply your Western ideas and priorities to Africa’s needs, challenges, and aspirations. Stop piling more aid on top of the billions of dollars that have been poured into the African continent for the last five decades with no results except helping you think of cleansing the guilt of limousine liberators in the name of helping these poor Africans. And, please, please, stop attempting to dictate how Africa should use its own oil and gas resources. With the right strategies, a thriving African oil and gas industry is the key to alleviating widespread energy poverty, to bolstering economic growth and diversification, and, ultimately, to improving the lives of everyday Africans. Africans have every right to decide how and when to use their natural resources without interference from the rest of the world, no matter how well-intentioned. Carbon Emissions What’s behind the vested interest in African oil and gas production? Does the world really have our best interests at heart? Sure, reining in greenhouse gas emissions is an admirable goal. But consider this. Over the last 300 years, 	all of Africa has emitted seven times less carbon dioxide than China, 	13 times less than the United States, and 	18 times less than the combined countries of Europe. Attempting to phase out Africa’s oil industry to prevent climate change is like snuffing out a small, controlled campfire instead of focusing your attention on kilometers of blazing forestland. Funny that the keep-fossil-fuels-in-the-ground argument is a Western construct, promoted by countries that developed their economies with fossil fuels. I will not name names. The head of Africa oil trading for the multinational commodity-trading firm, Trafigura, said telling Africa not to develop its resources is akin to making Africa “pay for the sins” of other regions. I say, trying to dictate what Africa does with its own resources is insulting, hypocritical, and frankly, an overstep. But you know what, I think there’s more going on here than just climate change concerns. The oil and gas industry has been painted as a bunch of bad guys that oppress people and steal resources. Wrong. But if that’s true, how do you explain indigenous oil and gas industry companies that provide jobs and training opportunities for local residents, and partner with local suppliers? Same story for the international companies operating in Africa. But on top of providing jobs, international companies also share knowledge and technology and often improve the communities where they operate. Something else to consider: Many oil and gas companies are diversifying their portfolios to include renewable energy assets. In fact, some of them are at the forefront of research that could lead to new renewable energy technologies. So, if the goal is to move Africa toward increased renewable energy usage a healthy oil and gas industry is a good and cost effective way to get there. Does anyone care about energy poverty? But the most important reason why Africa should be free to continue hydrocarbon production is this: Africa’s huge natural gas reserves are the continent’s best shot at alleviating energy poverty. Today, more than 620 million people in sub-Saharan Africa don’t have electricity. That’s two-thirds of the population. Hundreds of millions more have unreliable or limited power. What does that look like? Without electricity, you’re cooking your food and warming your home by burning wood, charcoal, or maybe even animal waste. Your regular exposure to indoor air pollution increases your risk of respiratory infections and chronic conditions. If you need to go to the hospital for treatment, it will be by lantern light or, worse yet, in the dark. Equipment that requires electricity, like MRI machines and ventilators, is probably not an option. And that’s just one aspect of your life. It doesn’t even touch on how a lack of electricity impacts your children’s school or limits economic growth in your community and your employment opportunities. Gas-to-power technology which, incidentally, generate fewer CO2 emissions can bring reliable electricity to Africa. But we have to be allowed to unleash our resources, not constrain them. The good news is, 13 African countries are using natural gas they produce themselves or import from neighboring nations to generate electricity. Yes, I know that renewable energy can help meet Africa’s power needs, too. But Africans shouldn’t be pressured to make either-or decisions in this area. Energy poverty is a serious concern. Making the solution more difficult to address is simply wrong. Freedom from aid Now, let’s circle back to the idea that Africa needs everyone’s help. For more than 60 years, the world has poured financial aid into Africa. And where has that gotten us? We still have hunger. We still have poverty. We still have violence, infrastructure deficits…the list goes on. There’s no question other nations and other people want to lift us up. But the net effect of their generosity has been to keep Africa under outside control. To achieve autonomy, we start by monetizing of our oil and gas resources. This starts with using oil and gas as a feedstock to create other value-added products, like petrochemicals and fuel. Then we take the revenues to build infrastructure and diversify economies. Senegal, Mozambique, South Africa, anzania, Nigeria, Cameroon, Algeria and Equatorial Guinea has started down this path. And with the right fiscal, tax and regulatory policies, they will be on their way to being a major players in the world’s LNG market. Allowed to continue to use our resource wealth our way, other African countries can follow that lead. So, you see, Global Community. Africa doesn’t need you to help it. Africa doesn’t need you to decide how to best protect Africa from climate change. Nobody protects the environment better than Africans. Look at the emission numbers. Africans need you to respect us and to understand that your perspectives, priorities, and solutions are just that: yours. We have our own goals, and our own paths to get us there. The plant is equipped with parabolic trough technology and a molten salt storage system that allows for 5.5 hours of energy storage to provide reliable electricity during peak demand. Power is contracted through a 20 years Power Purchase Agreement with Eskom (South African Electricity Public Utility). Xina Solar One is supplying clean energy to more than 95,000 South African households and prevents the emission into the atmosphere of approximately 348,000 tons of CO2 each year. The plant is located in the Northern Cape of South Africa, which is also the location of ENGIE’s 100 MW Kathu CSP plant. Xina Solar One increases ENGIE’s renewable footprint and is a further step to cementing its position as the leading Independent Power Producer in the country. Synergies between Xina and Kathu will be developed to further enhance the operational efficiency of both plants. “With the acquisition of this project, ENGIE is pursuing its low carbon strategy. Xina augments the country’s installed peaking power and reduces its dependence on coal-fired electricity. The 100 MW CSP plant also contributes to ENGIE’s geographic rationalization by expanding its footprint in South Africa, where it is the leading Independent Power Producer with 1,320 MW of installed capacity.”  says Sébastien Arbola, CEO of ENGIE MESCATA. ENGIE acquires 100 MW Concentrated Solar Power plant in South Africa

In the African environment with economies facing growth challenges, the self-employed assumes an indispensable role in the functioning of the market economy, as they constitute the first stage in the creation of a crowded and competitive market. The self-employed are faced with serious and exclusive challenges. Given their fragile condition, they require a special treatment regime that subsidizes their successful operations. According to the law of Equatorial Guinea, a self-employed worker is any natural person who performs economic activities on his account. Compared to working for someone else, being self-employed has many advantages such as self-management, flexibility, dedicating yourself entirely to your passion and, above all, being your boss. One must take into account that this also entails obligations of an administrative and fiscal nature. 1. Register as self-employed: In recent years, there has been a tendency by the Government of Equatorial Guinea to promote the development of economic activities of small entrepreneurs, which is why self-employment is now more common in Malabo and Bata. To register as a self-employed person, you require a Tax Identification Number (NIF), a business certificate and a business registration certificate. To obtain the aforementioned, you are obliged to inquire at the VUE business single window. It is compulsory to present your identity document and indicate the location of the business operations. 2. What taxes do you have to pay and what are your advantages? 	Personal Income Tax The Personal Income Tax is levied on net income obtained in Equatorial Guinea. The procedure is to complete a form, within the first ten days of each month, declaring the gross income of the previous month. This must be submitted to the Tax Administration. The tax rate ranges from a minimum rate of 0% to a maximum of 35% depending on the income. If the annual income obtained is less than 1,800 USD, it will be exempt. Generally, if the self-employed carries out the activity through a commercial company, they will be liable for Corporation Tax instead of Personal Income Tax. 	Value Added Tax (VAT) The Value Added Tax (15% in Equatorial Guinea) is levied on the consumption of goods and services. All self-employed must be aware that as a provider of goods and services, they act as a mere intermediary between the tax administration and the final consumer. The VAT return is submitted within the first 15 days of each month.  If no transaction has been carried out a negative return must be submitted. 3. What are the challenges and how to overcome the obstacle of being autonomous? The actions of the self-employed are subject to risks and instability. In addition to tax obligations, there are certain common difficulties faced on a day-to-day basis. The question is how to handle them. 	Liquidity Problems: In many cases, this is due to late payment of consumers and/or clients. It forces the self-employed to advance financial amounts to meet the fiscal obligations.  Taxes are to be paid, irrespective of the actual payment has been received. This not only puts your assets at serious risk but also the survival of your businesses. As a solution, there are several strategies that a freelancer can adopt. For example, keep track of income and expenses so that a forecast can be made considering fixed and variable costs. Likewise, it is convenient to be aware of the payments that are due in order to take possible irregularities and delays into account. Adjusting expenses, favourable agreements for the business that allows flexibility and to pay in instalments  are other solution. As an alternative, the self-employed can resort to credit. EG banks such as BANGE offer credit especially focused on the self-employed. ECOBANK GE offers credits in support of female entrepreneurs. Additionally, other entities offer credits for small entrepreneurs after meeting certain requirements. 	Problems with Deductions: Many freelancers do not have an office and resort to working from home. This can pose a problem when presenting expenses to deduct. Despite having the appearance of professional expenses with the right to be deductible, it can be complex before the tax administration to effectively achieve such deductions due to the difficulty of separating. To overcome these glitches it is important to be able to justify and have a financial record of your activity. A financial record always requires an invoice for all expenses related to it. It is imperative to ensure that the invoices are generated correctly and to always apply the corresponding VAT or Personal Income Tax. As a general rule of thumb, an expense can only be deducted if it directly relates to the specific activity.  Therefore, it is preferable not to present any expense that cannot be fully justified,  as this will lead to a penalty. 	Management Snags: The self-employed have profuse responsibilities. These tasks are inter alia, developing their business, attending to administrative errands and managerial tasks (which  includes accounting and taxation) It is essential that the self-employed accurately captures the income and expenses of their activity in accounting books. The accounting books must be kept for a period of five years to avoid penalties by the Tax Administration. Defending champion, Simon Clarke placed in 5th place for Team Qhubeka ASSOS (www.TeamQhubeka.com), riding strongly in the race. It was a team effort throughout, with multiple appearances on the front of the peloton, keeping the break at a controlled distance. Once the break was caught, there were plenty of attacks off the reduced peloton, with Bagioli staying away to secure the win. The reduced bunch sprint saw Darryl Impey (ISN) placing second and Mikkel Frølich Honoré (DQS) third. Simon Clarke &#8220;It was a good race, I was really motivated to try and defend my victory from last year and I tried to approach the race from a tactical point of view similar to what I did last year. For the most part, it worked out quite well. I had good legs and I was feeling good. Unfortunately, I think I started following the attacks a little bit too early, which is where the race split up last year. In the end, everything came back together for a bit of a sprint, in hindsight, maybe I should have taken it a bit easier and focused on the final stretch. The positives were that I was feeling good, and I was in the front. The team were also super strong, they rode for me all day, I owe a big thanks to them for helping me and putting me in the right position. I had Fabio Aru with me in the final, helping me out and making sure everything was ok. The imports primarily consist of chemicals, foodstuffs and a wide range of goods made of plastic or rubber. The new office will be headed by Country Manager Prashant Sindhwani. While 19 staff members will work in Mombasa, 6 will be based in Nairobi and 1 in Uganda. Via the gateway port of Mombasa, the shipping company offers two different services.
