The International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation (ITFC) (http://www.ITFC-IDB.org) and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) (Agriculture Division) in collaboration with IsDB Group Business Forum (THIQAH) recently hosted a webinar entitled “Agritech Digital Solutions”, covering how fourth industrial revolution (4IR) innovations can drive sustainable change across agribusiness value chains.

With around 45% of crops produced going to waste, and an estimate 690 million people estimated to have been undernourished last year, agri-value chains face enormous challenges and pressures to improve efficiency, promote financial inclusion and adapt to the current digital environment.
In this second of Agritech webinars in a series from the IsDB and ITFC, the panellists looked at how 4IR solutions can empower local agribusiness actors and enrich agriculture value chains across the region by identifying specific transformation challenges, including legal, commercial, sovereign, financial and capacity building hurdles.
Aimed at public and private sectors in the field of Agriculture from Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states, agriculture start-ups, academic institutions and multilateral development banks, the webinar examined how to leverage the power of ICT application and partnerships through a panel discussion and three presentations on Paperless Trade, Digital Supply Chain Management, and IoT in the Digital Supply Chain.
The Fourth Industrial Revolution
Several 4IR solutions were identified throughout the panel discussions, ranging from e-Bills of Lading and presentation of goods, right through to harnessing interoperability in emerging technologies such as IoT and AI. Presentations focused on how we can widen access to financing through fintech solutions, how to apply digital applications to help reduce crop wastage, and how to boost the flow of agricultural trade (input and output markets) within and across countries.
The General Manager, Trade &#038; Business Development at ITFC, Eng. Nasser Al-Thekair, noted that “With so much at stake in agriculture &#8211; hundreds of millions of jobs, food security and the impacts of climate change – it is imperative that leading players in the agri-ecosystem come together to formulate practical 4IR solutions that can be applied easily across the value chain. During this webinar on Agritech Digital Solutions, we examined potential 4IR solutions to enhancing transparency and visibility across supply chains, from the farmer to the market – this is crucial in garnering trust among financiers, producers, consumers and other stakeholders.”
Same problems, new solutions
The webinar highlighted growing evidence that digital solutions such as blockchain, the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence and robotics can create conditions for inclusiveness, enable connectivity between producers and buyers of farm production, and empower women and youth, smallholder businesses and actors, and connect less-developed markets with more developed ones.
Master of Ceremony Nasser M. Al-Thekair – General Manager, Trade and Business Development ITFC, introduced the first panel discussion examining global practices and lessons, which was moderated by Deepesh Patel – Editorial Director, Trade Finance Global (TFG). The panellists included Wolfgang Lehmacher – Leader of KATALYST’s Supply Chain Innovation Network, Sachin Gupta – the Global Agribusiness Offering Leader at IBM, Oswald Kuyler – the Managing Director of the International Chamber of Commerce’s ‘Digital Standards Initiative’ (DSI), and Philip Harris – Co-Founder of Ripe.io.
Deepesh Patel, Editorial Director at Trade Finance Global said: “We talked about Supply Chain 3.0 8 years ago, which meant implementing basic IT systems, leveraging digital capabilities and trying to increase yield and efficiencies in supply chains. Supply Chain 4.0 is now addressing how we can address the age-old challenges around paper-heavy and antiquated supply chains. The session encouraged debate around how we can apply the Internet of Things, the use of advanced robotics and big data in supply chains.”
Presenting their perspectives in their specialist fields were Jacco de Jong – Head of Global Sales Bolero who explained the benefits of Paperless Trade; Carlina Marani – BDE TradeLens Europe &#038; MEA at IBM who spoke about Digital Supply Chain Management; and Jens Munch Lund-Nielsen – Head of Global Trade and Supply Chains at IOTA who presented perspectives on the role of IoT in the Digital Supply Chain.

Team Qhubeka ASSOS is delighted to announce contract renewals for Nicholas Dlamini and Carlos Barbero.

Dlamini, 25, continues his journey with our organisation having made the step up from our Lucca-based Continental team into Africa’s only UCI-registered WorldTour outfit in 2018, and subsequently firmly establishing himself as a household name.
A previous King of the Mountains classification winner at the Tour Down Under as well as the Tour of Britain, the South African’s 2020 season got off to the worst possible start as he spent time recovering from a broken arm, which ruled him out of all competition prior to the season being halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic­­.
Following the season’s restart, Dlamini’s focus was on the build-up to his second grand tour appearance at the Vuelta a Espana and included the World Championships in Imola. He unfortunately was forced to withdraw from the former due to illness, and will consolidate a comprehensive off-season programme in full preparation for 2021 which includes a major goal of representing Team South Africa at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
Barbero, 29, has made an incredibly positive impact on the team since joining at the start of 2020. An effervescent character, he had a very good start to the year at the Saudi Tour finishing sixth on the general classification.
The Spaniard unfortunately crashed while training in late July and his resultant preparations for the Vuelta a Espana were impacted, although he did manage excellent top-10 finishes at the Memorial Marco Pantani and Coppa Sabatini-Gran Premio citta di Peccioli.
These renewals follow-on from the confirmation earlier in the week that European and Italian champion Giacomo Nizzolo remains with the team, together with new signings in Simon Clarke, Dimitri Claeys and Kilian Frankiny.
That’s in addition to Victor Campenaerts, Domenico Pozzovivo, Michael Gogl, Andreas Stokbro, Max Walscheid and Dylan Sunderland who were all already under contract for 2021.
Nicholas Dlamini To re-sign with the team, now as Team Qhubeka ASSOS, is a big relief as it means that the African dream stays alive. Having Qhubeka back as part of our name is very special and I’m really looking forward to seeing the kit design with the Qhubeka hand on our back, they have always been part of our DNA and very close to our hearts. The focus is of course on winning but also importantly on putting children on bicycles, so I know that my teammates and I are suffering out there for a great purpose.
I really look forward to getting the season underway and I’ve already started my planning for it including training camps and looking at some of the races that I really want to focus on. 2021 is a big year for me and the team, and I really want to showcase my talent and show the team colours prominently in races, so I really look forward to getting the season underway.
Doug has worked really hard to keep the team alive and we all appreciate his incredible efforts. We now need to give the absolute maximum back to the team; to try and score the best possible results for next year and hopefully we can keep the dream alive for another couple of years.
Carlos Barbero I am delighted to continue in this great family. I have felt very comfortable during this strange year in the team and my desire was always to renew.
I’d like to extend my thanks to the incredible work Doug has done to keep the team alive in 2021, as riders this provides us the platform to continue to educate the world that &#8220;bicycles change lives&#8221; and so I cannot wait to ride next season as Team Qhubeka ASSOS.
Douglas Ryder – Team Principal In Nic and Carlos you couldn’t have two more different stories in terms of their background but who epitomise exactly the power that our team, and sport has, in bringing people together. Both are exceptional individuals and core to the fabric of our team going into next season.
Nic’s continued development is something that we are very proud of. He’s someone that we’ve supported ever since he first dreamed of becoming a professional rider. To come through our Continental team, and then to establish himself at WorldTour level, speaks to exactly what we are as an organisation.
2020 though has been a very difficult year for everyone, and Nic had additional challenges in that he was injured for the first quarter of it. At 25 he is now in a crucial part of his career as a rider and knows that he now needs to kick on as part of that, not just for himself but also for the team.
Carlos came in at the start of the season and immediately made such a big impact. His personality away from the bike makes him an incredible team man and he’s ambitious on it too, so he’s the perfect mix. He also had some misfortune this year getting injured just prior to his “home race” – the Vuelta a Burgos – but we know that he will take on the challenge that next season will bring head-on.

The African Development Bank (www.AfDB.org) has held the first virtual statutory meeting of the new African Development Bank-Civil Society Committee ahead of the Civil Society Forum to be held on 26-27 November 2020. 

The committee, which met on Tuesday, aims to build stronger partnerships with the African civil society community by enhancing communications and raising awareness on the Bank’s work in their respective regions and sectors.
Building on the positive results from the previous committee, the Bank’s Civil Society and Community Engagement Division, which serves as the committee’s secretariat, facilitated the renewal of the Bank-Civil Society Committee for the next term, from 2020 to 2022.
“The Bank is counting on the active support, participation and contributions of the renewed committee over the next two years that will further reinforce civil society engagement and ensure the civil society community is contributing effectively to inclusive growth in the continent in line with the Bank’s 2013-2022 Ten-Year Strategy,” Vanessa Moungar, Bank Director for Gender, Women and Civil Society, told online participants.
The main objectives of the statutory meeting were to agree on the internal operational processes, prepare the committee work program, and discuss the role of civil society in the delivery of the High 5 (https://bit.ly/365fVX0) development priorities.

African Development Bank’s Civil Society Committee holds first virtual statutory meeting, announces new committee representatives

The African Energy Chamber (www.EnergyChamber.org) organized a Power Breakfast yesterday in Malabo to mark the launch of its Africa Energy Outlook 2021. The event gathered all of the Chamber’s partners and industry stakeholders in Equatorial Guinea as the market embarks on a path to recovery in 2021.

Despite its remarkable resilience, Equatorial Guinea’s oil sector is facing the same dire situation as the rest of global energy markets: plunging oil prices, uncertain demand and dry of capital on the back of the energy transition. In such a context, the country has embarked early on an ambitious investment outreach programme with the Year of Energy 2020 and the Year of Investment 2021. Key priorities include boosting local content, expanding midstream and downstream gas infrastructure, opening up the Rio Muni to onshore oil &#038; gas activities, and leveraging on the country’s tremendous minerals and mining potential to further diversify the economy.

In its latest 2021 Outlook however, the African Energy Chamber has called on African governments and industry stakeholders to come together and do more to support the sector’s competitiveness and attractiveness. A key concern for Equatorial Guinea’s oil &#038; gas industry remains the lack of competitiveness of its fiscal terms and the lack of an attractive enabling environment that supports local private sector growth and jobs creation. “The time for fiscal reforms in Equatorial Guinea and the CEMAC region is now. If we do not act now, our companies risk going bankrupt, our economic parameters will worsen and our jobs will be in jeopardy,” declared Leoncio Amada NZE, CEO of APEX Industries and Head of the CEMAC Region at the African Energy Chamber.

To support recovery and boost investment, the African Energy Chamber’s 2021 Outlook offers several pragmatic solutions. The Chamber has issued a call to action to policy makers and stakeholders around the adoption of bold fiscal reforms and the modernization of regulatory frameworks to bring back investors’ confidence. Similarly, the Chamber is increasingly engaging with financial institutions and banks on making capital more easily available to local entrepreneurs.
Finally, the 2021 Outlook also calls for a much wider adoption of natural gas across the economy, and a stronger industry dialogue to boost capacity building. “It would help if governments across the region caucus with international oil companies and the petroleum industry as a whole when drafting policies that are going to affect the industry. The voices of local and international investors need to be heard in order to adopt market-driven policies,” declared Simon Smith, Vice President and Country Manager at Marathon Oil Corporation.

Equatorial Guinea is ideally positioned to lead such a recovery, because of its political will and leadership and its established gas industry. “There is tremendous pressure from NGOs and green energy lobbyists, but there is still a future for the oil and gas industry in Africa. We have the right to exploit our natural resources to build our economies, and our natural gas potential offers such an opportunity,” added Oscar García Bernico, General Director of State Entities at the Ministry of Mines and Hydrocarbons. The Chamber has indeed highlighted how Africa’s gas potential, much more important than oil, is a key advantage for the continent as it seeks to embraced the energy transition and retain foreign capital.

The high-level reunion highlighted that, once again, the future is in the industry’s hands but the ability of policy makers and industry stakeholders to work together on a more ambitious set of reforms will be a deciding factor of the upcoming recovery. In doing so, the country will be ably to rely once again on leadership of H.E. Gabriel Mbaga Obiang Lima, Minister of Mines and Hydrocarbons. Both at home and abroad in key institutions such as OPEC, GECF or APPO, he has always been central to advocating for the interests of the local industry and the rest of Africa at large. In this context, Equatorial Guinea has strong cards to play, and is thankfully already embarked on landmark projects that can set it apart from years to come, from the development of an offshore gas megahub in the Gulf of Guinea to the expansion of its refining and gas monetization infrastructure at Punta Europa.

Rather than being cancelled altogether, the “Southern Africa Europe CEO Dialogue” goes online this year and will be hosted from Johannesburg in digital format on Thursday 26 and Friday 27 November 2020.

Now in its seventh year, the forum is aimed at strengthening the bridge between Southern Africa and by far its biggest trading partner, Europe.

The high-level networking and debate platform among key decision makers from the two regions will again bring together influential business leaders, institutions, Governments and scholars to engage on the primary topic of “Southern Africa and Europe after COVID-19”.

A long-standing partnership between the Gauteng Provincial Government and Europe’s leading think tank, The European House-Ambrosetti, the Summit has played a crucial role in stimulating investment and economic opportunities between the two regions.

The Southern Africa Europe CEO Dialogue will look at how Europe and Italy can team up with Africa for sustainable development in light of the devastating impact of the global pandemic, and then set a future course to see how best South Africa and Italy can closely co-operate to ensure a fast, V-shaped recovery.

The Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Mr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, will deliver an exclusive message to the Summit’s participants via video link this year, while Ms Matshidiso Moeti, the WHO Regional Director for Africa, will also participate in the Summit’s plenary sessions.

“The COVID-19 global pandemic has taken a huge human, emotional and economic toll on our people and decimated the global economy. The Southern Africa Europe CEO Dialogue is a critical gathering which forms part of helping us identify the priority sectors of the economy that will be key drivers of our economic reconstruction and recovery. The summit has always played a crucial role in shaping our macro-economic picture and also supported our objectives of growing our township economy and we look forward to again engaging our African and European partners this year, “ said Gauteng Premier, Mr David Makhura.

On November 26, some of the world’s most distinguished speakers, CEO’s and leaders of major companies will talk about the development prospects in Africa, as well as the challenges and opportunities in stimulating the economic recovery post COVID-19.

In the digital plenary sessions at the Capital on Park Hotel in Johannesburg on November 26th the key topics addressed will be:

A big boost for the Summit is the participation of Mr Wamkele Mene, the Secretary General of the African Union’s Africa Continental Free Trade Area, who will speak on the path towards an integrated economic African continent.

As always, energy will be high on the gathering’s agenda, including the need to change the continent’s energy consumption and power production patterns, and shift away from fossil fuels towards renewables. The Dialogue will look at the latest technological developments related to renewables and the opportunities the energy transition creates in leveraging existing physical assets.

2020 has likely challenged the industry unlike any year in its history. A relatively stable growth in liquids demand has indeed been observed over the last 20 years. Even during the financial meltdown in 2008 and 2009, the demand overall was very resilient. In 2020 however, demand is currently expected to be about 10 million barrels of liquids less per day than pre-COVID-19 expectations.
Intra year, this difference is even more extreme as the brunt of this reduction occurred during the widespread lockdown in the second quarter to halt the coronavirus outbreak.
Such a dramatic change to demand created shockwaves into the markets by putting enormous negative pressure on prices. Most notably, the West Texas Intermediary reference price even ended up trading at negative levels as there simply was no ability to store more oil. The market forces therefore led to widespread production shut ins in North America as well as an OPEC agreement to cut production by about 10 million barrels per day.
As such, the oil markets have now rebalanced but with significant available capacity offline. COVID-19 has triggered a big short-term negative revision in oil price expectation while the mid to long term outlook still points to an oil price at least north of $50/bbl based on the assumption that a solution will be found to the current COVID-19 pandemic, pushing global economic activity towards pre-COVID-19 levels. As a consequence of less revenue, the various operators in the world have also slashed their investment outlooks considerably. The combined reduction for 2020 to 2025 in expected global upstream CAPEX is of $690 billion compared to the initial expectation in February 2020 before COVID-19 was declared a pandemic. The reduction is front loaded implying that it is 2020 and 2021 where one should expect to see the biggest changes with almost 30 percent lower spend than pre-COVID-19 expectations.

African Health Ministers gathering for the resumed Seventieth session of the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Committee for Africa took stock this week of the region’s efforts in combatting the COVID-19 pandemic, with calls to step up vigilance and head off a possible resurgence of infections.

Opening the meeting, Hon. Jacqueline Mikolo, Minister of Health and Population, Republic of Congo and Chairperson of the Seventieth Regional Committee, called for increased high-level political commitment, solidarity, information-sharing, and research on traditional medicines in the fight against COVID-19.
Minister Mikolo reiterated “our commitment to preserve the gains made and work hard and together to contain a possible second wave of COVID-19 in Africa.” She also noted that it was crucial to “fight complacency [in observing COVID-19 preventive measures] by strengthening communication and epidemiological surveillance.”
Most African countries took swift action early, and these efforts to limit movement and gatherings along with implementing key public health measures have helped keep cases and deaths in Africa lower than in many other parts of the world.
WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Matshidiso Moeti, underscored the importance of bolstering prevention, notably as people travel or gather for end-of-year celebrations. “As we observe cases surge in parts of Europe and the Americas, and an uptick in our regional daily cases graph, we cannot be complacent. We need to prepare for a resurgence, including scaling-up precautions in risky situations such as festive and elections-related gatherings.”
Over the past three weeks, the African region has recorded a steady increase in COVID-19 cases. As of 22 November, 18 countries reported an increase of more than 20% in the previous seven days when compared with the last seven days.
“We all need to continue to be vigilant in our testing, isolation and treatment, and our strong communication on the non-pharmaceutical interventions,” said Hon. Lia Tadesse Gebremedhin, Ethiopia’s Minister of Health and Second Vice-Chair of the Seventieth Regional Committee. “The COVID-19 pandemic is a crisis unlike anything any of us has experienced in our lifetimes, yet it can be a catalyst for building the safer, healthier and more sustainable Africa we all want.”
At the Special event on the COVID-19 response in the WHO African Region, which took place during the Regional Committee, South African Minister of Health Hon. Zweli Mkhize shared lessons from his country’s experience in fighting the virus. The Minister stressed the need for engagement at the highest levels for quick, evidence-based decisions, the timely use of innovative technologies, public and private sector collaboration and addressing the knock-on socio-economic impact of the pandemic, particularly among the most vulnerable groups.
“Right now, we are going through this COVID-19 fatigue, both from communities who are tired of wearing masks and [observing physical] distancing. We also have health workers who have been [through] a heavy burden, and now the resurgence is coming they are also showing a lot of fatigue. These are the areas we need to keep focusing on,” said Minister Mkhize.
WHO has taken a range of actions to support countries to prepare to roll out new COVID-19 vaccines, including releasing new guidance on vaccination planning and deployment and creating a new COVID-19 online vaccine introduction and readiness assessment tool for African governments.
The virtual meeting continued discussions that began online on 25 August. More than 200 delegates and civil society representatives took part in the deliberations that also covered the WHO Programme Budget for 2022– 2023.
The Regional Committee meeting is the annual gathering of WHO Africa’s governing body, bringing together Health Ministers and senior officials from all 47 Member States of the WHO African Region. The Seventy-first session of the Regional Committee will be held in Lomé, Togo in 2021.

The Republic of Seychelles becomes the fourth AU member states to ratify the Treaty for the establishment of the African Medicines Agency (AMA) on 13th August 2020, in Victoria, Seychelles and deposited the instrument of accession to the Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union on 23rd November 2020 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Commission encourages all its Member States to sign and ratify the treaty for the establishment of AMA in the interest of public health, safety and security. The treaty is available for signature at the Headquarters of the Commission in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The African Medicines Agency, will enter into force once ratified by fifteen African Union Member States. The AMA will serve as the continental regulatory body that will provide regulatory leadership, to ensure that there are harmonized and strengthened regulatory systems, which govern the regulation of medicines and medical products on the African continent.
The Agency will provide regulatory oversight through strengthened regulatory guidance and the coordination of on-going regulatory initiatives in order to improve access to safe, effective, good quality and affordable essential medicines, medical products and health technologies. AMA will partner with and coordinate existing harmonization efforts in the AU recognized Regional Economic Communities (RECs), Regional Organizations (RHOs) and member states.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created an unprecedented global emergency and significantly amplified existing challenges to Africa’s energy sector and created myriad new ones. While the pandemic has reached almost every country and has relatively been mild in Africa, the crisis is predicted to start unfolding here as well. The pandemic exposed all nations’ fragilities, but there is no doubt that it is affecting vulnerable communities and countries disproportionately.

As of the 2018 Global SDG7 Tracking report, more than half of the African population (590 million) still do not have access to electricity and that 870 million Africans are without access to clean cooking facilities. Tracking SDG 7: The Energy Progress Report 2020, based on data compiled before the COVID-19 crisis, highlighted the need for a redoubling of global efforts in Sub-Saharan Africa in order to achieve the goal. Expected progress to provide access could now be adversely affected by the economic impact of the pandemic. Some recent gains could even be lost.
Against this backdrop, the African Union Commission (AUC) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) will co-organize a virtual Second Ministerial Forum, under the auspices of the South African 2020 Chairship of the African Union (AU), represented by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy on 24 November 2020.
The aim of the Forum is to agree on and promote actions to ensure a sustainable economic recovery and scale up of energy investments in Africa over the next three years coinciding with end of the first 10-year Action Plan of the Agenda 2063. These actions include policy priorities for accelerating energy access, fostering cross-regional trade and regional integration, and setting an actionable vision for a prosperous African energy sector. Discussions will seek to build on the outcomes of high-level ministerial forums convened by the AUC and IEA throughout 2020, building on outcomes of the first 2019 Ministerial Forum as well as the findings from the IEA Africa Energy Outlook 2019 and other IEA and AUC analysis.The goal is to set new milestones and develop a roadmap to guide further joint AUC-IEA engagement to achieve the access, economic and environmental objectives set out in both the UN Sustainable Development Goals (especially linked to SDG 7) and the Agenda 2063 and building on the ongoing AU energy initiatives and programs as well as joint initiatives with international partners. It also provides an opportunity to share views on the ways in which the IEA Sustainable Recovery Plan’s energy sector roadmap for governments could best be applied to African contexts.
The Forum, convened under the auspices of the 2020 AU Presidency of South Africa, will gather a diverse mix of global and African top energy decision makers, including AU and IEA energy ministers, leaders of regional economic communities and other influential regional institutions in Africa, as well as executive level representation from global energy companies, development and financial institutions, investors, academia, policy think tanks and technology companies deeply involved in Africa’s energy sector transformation. The private sector will be represented by novel investment and financing companies and new smart solutions companies showing good practical examples.
Participants are expected to discuss several issues including ensuring a sustainable recovery in uncertain times, and filling the financing and investment gap: Priorities, Innovations, &#038; Modalities of Stronger Multilateral Cooperation.

AUC-IEA Ministerial Forum: Securing Africa’s Energy Future in the Wake of COVID-19

The African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), a specialized entity of the African Union (AU), supports African countries in the area of credit rating agencies. As part of this mandate, the APRM undertakes routine reviews of rating opinions of African countries issued by international credit ratings agencies. Accordingly, the APRM has noted the downgraded by the two dominant international credit rating agencies – Fitch and Moody’ – on the 20th of November 2020 on the Government of South Africa’s long-term foreign currency credit rating. Whilst the rating actions have been justified by the two agencies, the APRM raises the following observations;

 	The double rating downgrades is immediately translating to high debt costs making government debt unsustainable, deteriorating asset values and reduction in disposable income for many. This is exacerbating the deterioration of South Africa’s fiscal position, undermining the government’s fiscal consolidation efforts. 	This is the second time such ratings downgrade are happening since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic on the basis of largely the same rating drivers of economic contraction, expectation that fiscal deficit will widen and government debt will rise. These risk factors have not significantly changed since the rating agencies had already acted on them with previous rating actions during the COVID-19 peak period. It would therefore have been prudent for the two rating agencies to grant the South African government reprieve to implement its recently delivered Medium-Term Budget Policy, which seeks to pursue fundamental reforms to stimulate economic growth, reduce spending, narrow the deficit and bring down the debt-growth trajectory. 	It was premature to assess the outcomes of the proposed fiscal consolidation plans. The downgrades could have waited to see whether the government is committed to fiscal consolidation through, for instance, assessment of the outcomes of the ongoing public sector wage negotiations inline with 2020 Medium-Term budget assumptions which has plans to pare the government’s salary bill. 	The timing of the rating downgrades during the pandemic crisis continue to raise question on the procyclical approach of rating agencies – when bad news is piled on bad news – putting a further strain on an economy that are already strained by the impact of COVID-19. 	The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) forecasted the economy could expand by an annualized 45.2% in the third quarter, the biggest quarterly increase in at least 30 years. The rating agencies also acknowledge that the country’s economy is beginning to rebound in the third quarter and that the South Africa’s rating strengths remains in its credible central bank, a flexible exchange rate, an actively traded currency and deep capital markets, which should help counterbalance low economic growth and fiscal pressures. These factors should have been sufficient for the rating agencies to leave South Africa’s rating unchanged at one level below investment grade. 
Based on these factors, the APRM will provide technical and operational support to; the South Africa credit rating liaison team in preparing for upcoming credit rating review, the National Treasury for implementation of admissible rating recommendations, and engage rating agencies on information exchange with aim of avoiding further downgrades.

“Young people of South Sudan are demanding the dialogue to be intergenerational; we urgently need solidarity between generations to ensure co-leadership in the peace process”, she said The African Union Special Envoy on Youth, Ms. Aya Chebbi, during a 3-day solidarity mission to South Sudan to commemorate the Africa Youth Day. The goal mission was to advocate for the ratification of the African Youth Charter, exploring modalities for the operationalisation of the Youth centre of excellence and innovation alongside the youth framework on silencing the guns campaign. During this visit she engaged youth groups, government officials, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.

Recalling that the South Sudan national dialogue was initiated by President Salva Kiir in 2017, with the aim of approach to solving conflicts and attaining peace sustainability in South Sudan, the AU special envoy on youth visited Rumbek, where voluntary disarmament has taken place in Lakes State, accompanied by the Minister of Youth Dr. Albino and Minister of Labour Hon. James Hoth Mai and the Governor and state officials. She also has the opportunity to Rumbek, she visited young entrepreneurs, young peace builders and artists as part of the African Union theme of the year 2020, “Silencing the Guns”
To ensure youth inclusion at all levels of governance in South Sudan the AU youth Envoy to present the Report on Greater Inclusion of African Youth in Public Service and Governance to the Vice President for Gender sector H.E Mme. Rebecca Nyandeng Garang during the Inter-Ministerial Meeting held on 2nd November where they two digitates discussed discuss various programs under the youth and gender cluster as well as the ratification of the Africa Youth Charter
Ms. Chebbi was also invited to join the South Sudan National Dialogue conference which was attended by the Vice President for Services sector, General Haseeb Abdul Baqi, and the Vice President for Gender sector H.E Mme. Rebecca Nyandeng Garang, as well as the diplomatic corp where she urged South Sudan leaders to increase youth participation in the Transitional Government of National Unity.
As a representative and advocate for the voices and interests of African youth, during her visit, she took the opportunity to host two round tables discussion at both the Defy Hate Compound and the University of Juba, where youth shared their experiences especially during COVID-19 pandemic, their challenges including concerns in participating in the decision making and peace processes. She also announced the launch of the Sauti صوتي Blog and Publication, South Sudan chapter, making it the first country to domesticate the Sauti صوتي project. The Sauti blog is a platform to give space to young African women to feature young African women initiatives, support young African women creative and feature their artworks and lastly showcase and reinforce the linguistic diversity of Africa.

African Union Special Envoy on Youth Solidarity visit to South Sudan to commemorate Africa Youth Month

Lusaka Rugby Club aka Powerhouse has continued leading the way in shaping the landscape of Zambian rugby since the Covid19 restrictions were eased.

The club which introduced the now famous &#8220;Sunday Touch Rugby Games&#8221; in the Showgrounds opposite Manda Hill Lusaka has been recording great interest from many rugby enthusiasts. These include both former &#038; current players (male &#038; female), retired &#038; active Coaches, not forgetting selected national level and club administrators.

PowerHouse is now adding a new twist to its original concept by organizing a floodlight Touch Rugby Tournament set for Saturday 28th November, 2020. Kick off will be at 4pm up to 9pm after which a pool side party awaits patrons. A number of teams have so far confirmed participation &#038; organizers are promising a memorable experience.

On a related matter, Green Eagles Rugby Club in Kabwe has also stepped up preparations for their inaugural &#8220;Get Back from Covid19 Touch Rugby Tournament&#8221; to be hosted at their club on Saturday 05th December, 2020.

So far, Mufulira Rugby Club, Red Arrows and Kitwe Playing Fields (KPF) have hosted similar tournaments in the last few weeks since the lifeline was extended to the Zambia Rugby Union by the National Sports Council &#038; Ministry of Health. The Union, working in close collaboration with host clubs, is ensuring that all Covid19 regulations/ measures are strictly adhered to without exemption.

&#8220;As a Union we are happy that the game is back in action albeit in a different format. We, however, remain confident that sooner rather than later, the Covid19 pandemic will be a thing of the past &#038; we shall get back in full swing.
