Rwanda, Mobisol commit to electrify 70% of population

Rwanda, a country in Sub Saharan Africa, is making significant strides towards diversifying its energy mix by embracing solar energy. One of the key players in this electrification journey is Mobisol, a company that has partnered with the Rwandan government to provide smart, off-grid solar solutions to rural Rwandans. The ambitious goal is to electrify 70% of the population by 2018. In a recent interview with CNBC Africa, Joelle Nzambimana, the Chief Administrative Officer of Mobisol, shed light on the challenges and successes of this initiative. Despite only 26% of the population being electrified in Rwanda so far, Mobisol remains optimistic about bridging the gap with innovative solutions. Nzambimana highlighted the importance of educating the population about the benefits of off-grid solar energy, emphasizing that it goes beyond just providing lighting. Solar energy is not only environmentally friendly but also a key part of a country's development. By offering affordable payment plans spread over three years, Mobisol aims to make solar energy accessible to a wider population. The incorporation of SIM cards in the solar systems allows for remote monitoring of usage and payments, making the process seamless for customers. The integration of mobile money platforms has also simplified payment methods, aligning with the widespread use of mobile phones across the continent. Nzambimana acknowledged the interconnectedness of solar electrification and mobile phone penetration, highlighting the role of technology in advancing both sectors. As mobile phones become ubiquitous in Africa, leveraging this technology to enhance solar energy solutions is vital for progress. The partnership between Mobisol and the Rwandan government, as well as collaborations with the European Union and other key stakeholders, reflect a concerted effort to achieve the electrification target. As one of the sponsors of the International Power and Infrastructure Conference (IPAD), Mobisol is actively participating in discussions and initiatives aimed at advancing energy infrastructure globally.
