Rwanda launches internet exchange point

In a significant move towards enhancing digital capabilities and reducing costs, Rwanda recently launched the Rwanda Internet Exchange Point, following a deal between the African Union and Rwanda last October. The CEO of the Rwanda Information and Communication Technology Association, Nkeramugaba Ghislain, shed light on the emergence of this soft infrastructure and the implications it holds for the region. The launch of the Rwanda Internet Exchange Point on 8th March marks a pivotal moment for the country and the East Africa region. This development now enables the seamless switching of internet traffic among Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, and beyond. Ghislain emphasized the newfound regional role that Rwanda can play, leveraging enhanced infrastructure and upgraded systems to cater to increased capacity and broader outreach. Ghislain highlighted that the impact of the internet exchange point extends beyond content creators, encompassing payment switches, finance sectors, and various other players in the digital landscape. The exchange point serves as a facilitator for diverse entities to push and fetch content, establishing a more connected and efficient network for all stakeholders involved. One of the crucial benefits of the Rwanda Internet Exchange Point lies in the reduction of data transfer costs. Ghislain employed an airplane flight analogy to explain this concept, likening the exchange point to a hub that connects multiple destinations. By having the exchange point in close proximity to content fetchers and pushers, the need for long-haul data transfers to distant locations like Europe is eliminated, significantly driving down costs. The pricing of data transfers locally has drastically decreased, with data now being fetched at around thirty dollars instead of the previous hundred dollars, leading to substantial cost savings for businesses and consumers. Overall, the establishment of the Rwanda Internet Exchange Point signifies a leap forward in fostering innovation and digital connectivity in the region.
