COVID-19: Rwanda looks to tech solutions to revive its tourism industry

Rwanda's tourism industry has taken a hard hit due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the country losing about $10 million in tourism receipts between March and April this year. In an effort to recover from this crisis, Rwanda is turning to innovative tech solutions to help boost the tourism and hospitality sectors. Frank Gisha Mugisha, Director of Rwanda Tourism Chamber, discussed the country's approach to leveraging technology to minimize the risk of COVID-19 spread and revive the tourism industry. Mugisha highlighted the importance of digital platforms in keeping businesses afloat during these challenging times. One of the key areas where technology plays a crucial role is in ensuring the safety of guests at hospitality establishments. By implementing digital solutions for client registration and tracking, businesses can minimize physical contact and prevent the spread of the virus. This proactive approach not only enhances safety measures but also builds trust among consumers, encouraging them to return to tourism establishments. Additionally, digital marketing has become essential in staying connected with clients and promoting new products and preventive measures. Mugisha emphasized the significance of targeting both international and domestic consumers, especially in the initial stages of recovery where domestic tourism can play a pivotal role. By focusing on digital marketing strategies and enhancing online booking platforms, Rwanda aims to attract visitors and stimulate economic growth within the tourism sector. Despite challenges such as privacy concerns and reluctance from some individuals to register their details, Mugisha stressed the importance of collective responsibility in adhering to health guidelines. He emphasized that prioritizing public health is crucial in preventing further spread of the virus and avoiding potential lockdowns. By encouraging compliance with health protocols and enhancing technological solutions, Rwanda seeks to rebuild its tourism industry and generate income for those working in the sector.
