PMSA reports paper recovery of 61.4%

The Paper Manufacturers Association of South Africa has released data showing a recovery in the paper and paper recycling sector in 2021, despite facing challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Jane Molony, the Executive Director of the Association, South Africa recycled 1.15 million tons of paper and paper packaging in 2021, representing a paper recovery rate of 61.4%. While this rate was 9% lower than the previous year, it was attributed to increased paper consumption driven by changing consumer behavior during the pandemic. Molony explained that the supply chain disruptions caused by COVID-19 led to a surplus of recovered paper in 2020, which was significantly utilized, resulting in the lower recovery rate in 2021. One of the key trends identified for 2022 is the shift towards plastic substitution, with consumers and retailers advocating for the use of paper over plastic. This transition has both positive and negative implications for recycling efforts, as the addition of plastic to paper packaging can make it less recyclable and more challenging to process. Molony highlighted the importance of sustainable practices in the paper industry, emphasizing that paper is a renewable resource derived from trees grown in sustainably managed plantations. She debunked the misconception that recycling paper saves trees, clarifying that the trees grown for paper production are specifically cultivated for economic and environmental purposes. In response to growing environmental concerns and consumer preferences for eco-friendly products, the paper industry is gearing up to meet the demand for climate-conscious packaging. Molony mentioned the implementation of extended producer responsibility legislation, which includes a fee on every ton of paper produced to fund recycling initiatives. The industry is also investing in research and development to test the recyclability of new packaging materials and promote the use of environmentally friendly alternatives. Additionally, manufacturers are exploring innovative solutions like producing packaging from gases and recycled paper, signaling exciting developments in the industry for 2023. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the South African paper industry remains resilient and adaptable, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability and meeting the evolving needs of consumers.
