<p>We call upon the new leadership of the ANC to now focus on the urgent task of addressing inequality, unemployment and poverty in our country. This can only be tackled by growing an inclusive economy that creates jobs. For this to happen, we require regulatory certainty and policy stability that will accelerate and deepen transformation.</p>
<p>More than ever, we need focused, ethical and moral leadership from the ruling party, government and business, working in partnership. Rooting out corruption and defeating state capture in both the private and public sectors remain a priority.</p>
<p>Business believes in South Africa. We stand ready to work with this ANC-led government towards achieving our NDP 2030 goals. We share the values set out in our constitution. <p>In a bid to clear its image from being perceived as the enemy of government, Business Leadership South Africa released a Quantec Report today telling of businesses contribution to South Africa.</p>


BLSA’s Mohale answers Zuma’s question, what is state capture?

<p>Business is the most significant direct contributor to the South African economy. These were among the findings in a report by Quantec Research, a South African economic consultancy, commissioned by Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA).</p>

<p>Other findings include:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Business is the most significant direct contributor to the South African economy</strong>. The direct output created* by BLSA members** alone was R1.9 trillion in 2016. That’s 1.2 times the value of total budgeted expenditure by government in 2016 and even that only represents a portion of the total impact of business.</li>
<li><strong>Big business support small enterprises in the supply chain</strong>. Nearly R1 trillion, or 66.7% of BLSA member expenditure was paid to suppliers, enabling them to employ people, pay taxes, purchase supplies and make investments. BLSA collectively received 34.4 points out of 40 for black enterprise development as prescribed by BEE Codes.</li>
<li><strong>Business employs 6.9 times the number of public sector employees. </strong>BLSA members themselves employ 1.29 million people, with another 1.97 million jobs supported in the supply chain. 596,719 people are dependent on BLSA employees. The 57 member companies in the study contribute 23.5% of total private sector employment, and pay full-time and part-time employees just under R2 trillion. A further R8.7 billion was devoted to training and skills development for BLSA’s employees.</li>
<li><strong>Business contributes to the public sector and supports the most important institutions of state through taxation.</strong> Taxation to government from BLSA members alone amounted to over R431 billion in 2016, 35.9% of total taxes collected. That’s the equivalent of more than one million teacher’s salaries, or almost two million police officers, or almost 1.5 million low-cost housing units.</li>
<li><strong>The direct positive impact of business on the economy and the lives of South Africans is significant, but the knock-on effects are often even greater.</strong> For every 1 rand of economic activity that BLSA members generate directly, a further 64c is added to the country’s GDP with an economy-wide impact of R2.59. And for every 100 people that were directly employed by BLSA members, another 153 indirect job opportunities were supported.</li>
<li><strong>Business is a key contributor to South Africa’s GDP. </strong>BLSA members contributed roughly 36% of the total South African domestic economy’s output in 2016, compared to government’s 11.7%, while contributing 34% of the country’s GDP.</li>
</ul>
<p>Bonang Mohale, Chief Executive of BLSA, says the report &#8220;confirms that business is a vibrant part of South African economy and society and a significant national asset. The footprint of BLSA’s members alone is notable – often bigger than that of Government itself. It’s a reminder that business touches every part of South African life and has a positive role and voice to play in the success of the nation.”</p>
<p>He added: “Despite its already outsized contribution, Business is committed to doing more to encourage inclusive economic growth and transformation. That is why earlier this year we launched our #Business Believes campaign where business made various commitments to society. Government must create the economic and policy conditions necessary for growth to occur, and then together business, government and civil society can work to put the South African economy back on track.”</p>

<p>South Africa&#8217;s Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba’s maiden Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement revealed a bleak state of public finances. The economic growth forecast was revised down to 0.7 per cent from 1.3 per cent for 2017.</p>

<p>Bonang Mohale, the Chief Executive of Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA), this morning launched #BusinessBelieves in South Africa campaign.</p>
<p>The campaign takes aim at the White Monopoly Capital (#WMC) propaganda that was allegedly peddled by the Guptas and their former PR company Bell Pottinger.</p>
<p><strong>SEE BLSA STATEMENT BELOW</strong></p>
<p>Mohale said BLSA members are committed to economic transformation, so that the country works for everyone, summing up his organisation’s values in an historic six-point ‘Contract with South Africa’ – which includes a focus on job creation, inclusive economic growth, empowering black business and crushing corruption.</p>
<p>Mohale said: “Business Believes in South Africa. South Africa’s future and our future as businesses are inseparable. We want the transformation so many in this country need so desperately. We share the values set out in its constitution. And we say humbly: we want to play our part in ensuring that South Africa works for everyone.”</p>
<p>He went on: “We are fighting back against the falsehoods of the White Monopoly Capital campaign and we are asserting business as a positive force in the life of this country.”</p>
<p>He argued: “Too many people are still living low quality lives – denied the fair chance that Madiba demanded on their behalf. Too often the dream of an equal South Africa has been betrayed. Our society continues to be ravaged by unemployment, poverty, nepotism and corruption.”</p>
<p>Mohale called on all political parties and civil society to make inclusive economic growth their priority, saying: “Because business believes when the economy is strong, South Africa is strong.”</p>
<p>Bonang Mohale and Nicky Newton-King, CEO of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), signed the following contract on behalf of the BLSA Board and Council.</p>
<p><strong><u>BLSA CONTRACT WITH SOUTH AFRICA</u></strong><strong> </strong></p>

<li><strong>Create jobs by growing the economy.</strong></li>
</ul>
<p>Between 1993 and 2015, South Africa’s private sector created 2.65 million jobs (Source: World Bank). Our aim is to create even more jobs.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Encourage and empower senior black leadership.</strong></li>
</ul>
<p>Ultimately, the best way to close the opportunity gap is to invest in more businesses owned, run by, and employing black South Africans. We pledge to grow a new generation of black business leaders and entrepreneurs.</p>

<li><strong>Invest in South Africans</strong></li>
</ul>
<p>South Africa can only meet the challenges of the future with a highly-skilled workforce.</p>
<p>We will train South African managers and workers for the challenges ahead.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Invest in communities.</strong></li>
</ul>
<p>Business owes it to South Africans to do more to ensure the communities in which they operate thrive and prosper.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Support small businesses.</strong></li>
</ul>
<p>They should be the lifeblood of our economy &#8211; but too often they struggle. It is our duty to help them succeed by financing new businesses, training and mentoring entrepreneurs for success.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Condemn and root out corruption<br />
</strong>Corruption and state capture are the cancers that are eating away at our society. They must be rooted out, crushed and punished where we find them in the public or private sector.</li>
</ul>
<p>Mohale also said: “Corruption and state capture are the cancers eating away at this society. We cannot create the conditions for inclusive growth in the face of state capture and corruption. Everyone who cares about this country must cry, ‘Not in my name!’ wherever they see evidence of corruption, whether in the public or private sector.”</p>
<p>He accepted there were areas where business needed to clean house – committing to and signing an Integrity Pledge, where BLSA members have zero tolerance of corruption – but pointed out the bigger problem was in Government: “We cannot grow our economy when these are the cancers eating away at our country. They must be rooted out and crushed.”</p>
<p>To create the policy environment necessary for favourable conditions for the economy to grow and succeed, “we need to see our commitment matched by government and labour, and BLSA will work with these stakeholders to map out a clear path to prioritise job creation and inclusive economic growth.”</p>
<p>“Only by upholding this contract that we have made today, will we ensure that the South Africa of Nelson Mandela’s dream – where everyone prospers &#8211; will become a reality,” concluded Mohale.</p>
