<p>JSW Steel USA is investing $1 billion in facilities in Mingo Junction, Ohio, and Baytown, Texas, President and CEO John Hritz told CNBC. </p>
<p>&#8220;We are going to be hiring over 1,000 people,&#8221; Hritz said on &#8221;<br />
Closing Bell<br />
&#8221; on Thursday. </p>
<p>The U.S. steel mill, headquartered outside Houston, produces hot-rolled plates and pipes. The capital expansion projects will introduce new manufacturing technology and create &#8220;many, many high-tech jobs,&#8221; Hritz said. </p>
<p>He credits President Donald Trump&#8217;s steel tariffs for enabling his company to expand. </p>
<p>
&#8220;We are completely in lockstep with the president,&#8221; Hritz said. &#8220;Completely in lockstep with the administration.&#8221;</p>
<p>In March, Trump announced a 25 percent tariff on steel products and a 10 percent tariff on aluminum. </p>
<p>&#8220;The whole idea of melt and manufacture, where this country is going, with regard to our ability &#8230; to supply defense, to supply infrastructure with heavy plate, to bring up the Mingo Junction facility, and to [improve] a community that was really decimated &#8230; all of this makes great sense,&#8221; Hritz said. &#8220;We would not have this capital from our parent company if they didn&#8217;t believe it.&#8221;
</p>
<p>JSW USA is part of parent company JSW GroupJSWSTEEL-IN, an $11 billion multinational conglomerate based in India, with businesses in South America and Africa in addition to the U.S. The more than 40,000 employees around the globe work in sectors such as steel, energy, infrastructure, cement and sports.</p>
<p>And Hritz isn&#8217;t worried about competition among other U.S. steel manufacturers. </p>
<p>&#8220;We will be the highest-technology, lowest-cost entity of its kind &#8230; in all of North America,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We&#8217;ll pick the markets we want.&#8221;</p>

<p>Since the U.S. lifted long-standing sanctions on Sudan last October, foreign investors&#8217; interest has started to trickle in, an expert on the region has told CNBC.</p>
<p>But it&#8217;s Chinese and Middle Eastern actors who already have first-mover&#8217;s advantage, Matthew Kindinger, sub-Saharan African analyst at emerging markets advisory firm Frontier Strategy Group, added.</p>
<p>&#8220;Any firm that was prevented from entering Sudan because of the U.S. sanctions now has much larger scope to expand in the market,&#8221; he said. &#8220;(But) the current administration&#8217;s Sudan policy appears to have become confused at the least, or at best a very low priority.&#8221;</p>
<p>Given the U.S.&#8217; sanctions, some of which date back to 1997 over human rights concerns and terrorism links, China and countries including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have instead been Sudan&#8217;s most prominent foreign investors.</p>
<p>&#8220;These countries want to maintain access to resource exports, such as petroleum to south Asian markets, and livestock to meet growing food demand in the Gulf states,&#8221; Chris Suckling, senior analyst at IHS Markit, told CNBC.</p>
<p>Sudan, located on the Horn of Africa and one of the continent&#8217;s largest countries by area, has suffered from brutal conflict for much of its history and saw its economy hit hard by the 2011 succession of its oil-rich southern region. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued President Omar al-Bashir with arrest warrants for war crimes twice in the past decade.</p>
<p>Given its troubled past — and present — the country is yet to fully capitalize on its strategic potential.</p>

<p>Sudan boasts a Red Sea coastline just ahead of the Suez Canal, a shipping passage that permits access between Eastern and Western markets. The country borders landlocked Ethiopia, Chad and South Sudan, with the former in particular keen to boost its export capacity and diversify the transport infrastructure it relies upon. Turkey, Qatar and Ethiopia have all inked deals to develop Sudan&#8217;s ports.</p>
<p>The country is also resource-rich, with significant gold and oil reserves.</p>
<p>Sudan, for its part, has been attempting to position itself as open to business after two decades as an investment pariah under the U.S.&#8217; sanctions. In 2013, the government passed its National Investment Encouragement Act, which prohibits discrimination against foreigners in business.</p>
<p>&#8216;Confused&#8217; U.S. foreign policy</p>
<p>According to Frontier Strategy Group&#8217;s Kindinger, the U.S. has been sending out mixed messages on its Sudan policy.</p>
<p>He said that while ties improved under former President Barack Obama&#8217;s administration, current President Donald Trump added Sudan to his travel ban list in 2017, only to remove it eight months later.</p>
<p>Last October, the Trump administration revoked sanctions on Sudan. &#8220;This decision was meant to be taken four months earlier, but couldn&#8217;t because Mr. Trump had not yet made the requisite appointees in the Africa department,&#8221; Kindinger said.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, Sudan remains on the State Department&#8217;s list of official sponsors of terror, despite sanctions being revoked partly because of Sudan&#8217;s backing of U.S. counterterrorism strategies. Inclusion on this list is an obstruction to any debt relief.</p>
<p>For its part, the State Department website says that trade and investment in Sudan is &#8220;not favorable for American firms,&#8221; citing &#8220;endemic corruption&#8221; on top of other factors including conflict, multiple exchange rates and poor banking and transport infrastructure.</p>
<p>An internationally untouched market</p>
<p>Shahram Safai, a partner at Dubai-based Afridi &amp; Angell Legal Consultants who advises on investment in Sudan, said that potential opportunities lie in mining, agriculture, livestock and industry. &#8220;Sudan is one of the few internationally untouched markets and the investment opportunities are unique,&#8221; he added.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Kindinger pointed out increasing investor activity in sectors such as health care, information technology and consumer goods. He added that any much-needed expansion of the country&#8217;s infrastructure also presented an opportunity, highlighting Turkish firm Summa&#8217;s March deal to build a new international airport in the capital Khartoum for a reported $1.15 billion.</p>

<p>But, moving into Sudan&#8217;s nascent market requires caution. The country ranks 170th out of 190 on the World Bank&#8217;s Ease of Doing Business index, for example.</p>
<p>Sudan&#8217;s &#8216;impending economic crisis&#8217;</p>
<p>Regardless of Sudan&#8217;s scope as a foreign investment destination, the country&#8217;s bloody conflict between the Arabic north and non-Arab south has spelled economic disaster thus far. South Sudan&#8217;s secession in 2011 took with it 75 percent of the country&#8217;s oil reserves. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), gross domestic product growth for Sudan plummeted by 10.6 percent the following year.</p>
<p>The removal of U.S. sanctions &#8220;has so far done little to avert the continued deterioration of Sudan&#8217;s oil-dependent economy or improve the country&#8217;s attractiveness to foreign investors,&#8221; Suckling said. The resulting rise in international trade has also compounded the country&#8217;s foreign exchange shortage.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, investment from the U.S. is expected to pick up, although China and the Middle East remain dominant for the moment. According to Afridi &amp; Angell&#8217;s Safai, the Sudanese authorities are working to improve the country&#8217;s banking sector to better facilitate the transfer of money.</p>
<p>&#8220;Once the full benefits of the lifting of U.S. sanctions is fully realized and implemented, we expect to receive far more interest,&#8221; he said.</p>

<p>The &#8220;struggle against Islamic terrorism in the Sahel,&#8221; an area to the far north of Nigeria, as well as a &#8220;White House attempt to make nice to Africa after a series of false steps,&#8221; could be part of the agenda, John Campbell, U.S. ambassador to Nigeria from 2004 to 2007 and now a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, told CNBC last week. Campbell emphasized that his suggestions were just &#8220;speculation&#8221; and that he has no connection with the present U.S. administration.</p>
<p>In January of this year Trump is alleged to have referred to African nations as &#8220;s&#8212;hole countries,&#8221; which the White House later did not deny.</p>

<p>Nigeria has seen its economy hammered in recent years by the volatile oil price, plunging into its first annual recession in 25 years in 2016. Gross domestic product growth for 2018 is forecast to be 2.1 percent by the <a href="http://www.cnbc.com/id/10000936?__source=cnbcafrica|inline|story|&amp;par=cnbcafrica &amp;doc="><br />

<p>Buhari, 75, is a former military leader. He was elected president in 2015 in what signified the first time an opposition party had won an election in Nigeria. Earlier this month it was announced that Buhari would contest the presidency once again when Nigeria heads to the polls next year.</p>
<p>&#8220;For Buhari it is advantageous to be seen to be active at the highest world stage while his campaign for re-election in 2019 builds steam,&#8221; Philip Walker, Nigeria analyst at the Economist Intelligence Unit, told CNBC.</p>

<p>On Tuesday, the Trump administration revealed plans to slap a 25 per cent tariff on $50 billion worth of annual imports from China, including technology, transport and medical products. Beijing was quick to retaliate on Wednesday, announcing a 25 percent levy on 106 U.S. goods such as soybeans, chemicals, cars, some types of aircraft and corn products.</p>
<p>MSCI’s emerging stocks benchmark fell 1.5 percent to a 50-day low, turning negative on the year. Asian bourses tumbled with heavyweight Hong Kong down 2.2 percent to touch multi-week lows and Malaysia and South Korea not far behind.</p>
<p>But the rekindled fears of protectionism also sapped risk appetite across wider emerging markets, with bourses in Moscow , Turkey and central Europe also trading in the red. South African stocks tumbled more than 3 percent, also suffering from a price target cut. Nigeria SE fell 0.70 percent and Nairobi&#8217;s All Share Index was flat.</p>
<p>“China is a hub where products from the rest of Asia are assembled and re-exported to the Western world, especially the U.S.,” said Inan Demir, senior emerging economist at Nomura International.</p>
<p>“If Chinese-origin products are subject to tariffs, the likelihood is that other countries will have less room to export to China, because the final destination of those products is the U.S. and also because Chinese growth will slow down.”</p>
<p>Currencies also felt the heat, broadly weakening against the softer dollar. China’s yuan eased 0.4 percent, suffering its biggest daily fall in two weeks, while Mexico’s peso and Russia’s rouble matching those falls.</p>
<p>Turkey’s lira weakened 0.6 percent against the dollar, crashing once again through the 4-to-the-dollar threshold while tumbling nearly 1 percent against the euro.</p>
<p>Investor worries over Turkey’s monetary policy and stubbornly high inflation contributed to the latest weakness.</p>
<p>“Given the market’s concern about over-heating in the Turkish economy, a pronounced reluctance to implement counter-cyclical measures and (to) show a willingness to reduce interest rates further and strengthen credit growth, (this is) adding to market concerns about Turkey’s imbalances,” said Nomura’s Demir.</p>
<p>Markets also awaited a number of central bank decisions.</p>
<p>In Romania, the central bank is expected to deliver its third interest rate hike in the cycle which it launched early this year. Analysts anticipated a 25 basis point hike to 2.5 percent and a further rise to 3 percent by the end of the year.</p>
<p>Nigeria will publish its first interest rate decision of the year after a political stalemate prevented the monetary policy committee from forming a quorum. Most analysts expect the bank to hold rates at the record of 14 percent with cuts due later in the year.</p>

Sources told Reuters on Thursday that Trump had questioned why the United States would want immigrants from “shithole countries” like Haiti and some African countries during a briefing on draft immigration legislation.</p>
<p data-reactid="47">Trump denied on Friday using such derogatory language, but he had already been widely condemned in many African countries and by international rights organisations.</p>
<div class="DPSlot_container_2dHIN DPSlot_inline_1oeo6">“Ours is not a shithole country and neither is Haiti or any other country in distress,” Jessie Duarte, the deputy secretary general of South Africa’s ruling African National Congress told reporters at a news conference in East London.</div>
<p>“We would not deign to make comments as derogatory as that about any country that has any kind of socio-economic or other difficulties,” Duarte said, adding that much like their African counterparts millions of U.S. citizens were affected by problems such as unemployment.</p>
<div>Botswana’s foreign ministry summoned the U.S. ambassador in protest and called the comments “highly irresponsible, reprehensible and racist.”</div>
<p data-reactid="52">
It said in a statement that it had asked the U.S. government, through its ambassador, to “clarify” if the derogatory remark also applied to Botswana given that there were Botswana nationals living in the United States and others who wished to go there.</p>
<p data-reactid="53">U.N. human rights spokesman Rupert Colville told reporters in Geneva that Trump’s comments were “shocking and shameful”.</p>
<p data-reactid="54">Since taking office a year ago, Trump has pursued controversial policies aimed at curbing illegal immigration into the United States as part of a hard-line “America First” agenda.</p>
<p data-reactid="55">Trump said on Twitter on Friday that he merely used “tough” language when discussing a new immigration bill with a group of U.S. senators.</p>

<p data-reactid="58">In November it ended Temporary Protected Status for immigrants from Haiti and Nicaragua, giving 59,000 Haitian immigrants until July 2019 to return home or legalize their presence in the United States.</p>
<p data-reactid="59">On the streets of Lusaka, capital of the southern African country of Zambia, Trump’s reported remark reinforced long-held views about the U.S. leader.</p>
<p data-reactid="60">“Trump has always been a racist, only a racist can use such foul language,” said Nancy Mulenga, a student at the University of Zambia. Robert Chiponda, a communications consultant in Lusaka, said he never took Trump seriously.</p>
<p data-reactid="61">Others used humour to ridicule the offensive comments.</p>
<p>“As someone from South Shithole, Trevor is deeply offended by the president’s remarks,” U.S. television programme The Daily Show wrote on Twitter, referring to its South Africa-born host Trevor Noah.</p>

<p data-reactid="32">EAST LONDON, South Africa (Reuters) &#8211; Comments by U.S. President Donald Trump referring to some African nations as “shithole countries” are extremely offensive to South Africa, a senior official with the ruling African National Congress party said on Friday.</p>
<p data-reactid="40">“Ours is not a shithole country, neither is Haiti or any other country in distress,” Jessie Duarte, the deputy secretary general of the ANC, said at a news conference in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province.</p>
<p data-reactid="41">Two sources told Reuters that Trump on Thursday questioned why the United States would want to have immigrants from Haiti and African nations, referring to some as “shithole countries”.</p>
<p data-reactid="42">“It’s not as if the United States doesn’t have problems. There is unemployment in the U.S., there are people who don’t have healthcare services,” Duarte told reporters.</p>
<p data-reactid="43">She added: “We would not deign to make comments as derogatory as that about any country that has any kind of socioeconomic or other difficulties.”</p>

Trump comment on “shithole countries” extremely offensive – SA official

<p>NAIROBI, Jan 11 (Reuters) &#8211; Kenya Airways expects its daily direct flights to the United States that it launches for the first time in October to boost annual revenue by 10 percent from 2019, the chief executive said on Thursday.</p>
<p>The carrier, which is 7.8 percent owned by Air France KLM , has started taking bookings for the flights to and from New York that will carry 234 passengers each way on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner plane.</p>
<p>The new long haul route is part of an effort to revive the airline’s fortunes after it came close to collapse, leading to a $2 billion financial restructuring in November that included a government bailout which shrank Air France KLM’s stake.</p>
<p>“This is going to increase 2019 (revenues) by roughly 10 percent,” Chief Executive Officer Sebastian Mikosz told reporters at an event to launch the new 15-hour route.</p>
<p>U.S.-bound passengers from Kenya must now change planes in Europe or the Gulf on a journey that can take 20 hours or more.</p>
<p>“This is a symbol of the comeback of Kenya Airways,” Chairman Michael Joseph said.</p>
<p>Kenya has long wanted to fly direct to the United States, but Kenyan carriers were only granted U.S. security clearance for the route in February 2017 after a major refurbishment of facilities at the main Nairobi airport.</p>
<p>Kenya has suffered frequent attacks by an Islamist militant group based in neighbouring Somalia in recent years. The attacks hammered Kenya Airways by driving away tourists from the East African nation, which boasts palm-fringed beaches and safaris.</p>
<p>CEO Mikosz said the new route aimed to encourage more business and tourist travel with the United States, which he said was the biggest source of visitors to Kenya.</p>
<p>In the first 10 months of 2017, 95,771 tourists travelled to Kenya from the United States, a figure that has been rising 20 percent in each of the past two years, he said.</p>
<p>Kenya also hosts regional hubs for 48 U.S. or U.S.-based, organisations, such as Google and IBM, he added.</p>
<p>Thursday’s event was held at a five-star hotel to signal the end to recent hard times when gatherings were staged under a tent at the carrier’s training school to save costs.</p>
<p>The direct flights would create about 150 new jobs at Kenya Airways, said Mikosz, who was hired from LOT Polish airlines last June to help turn around the carrier.</p>
<p>Kenya Airways shares, which have tripled in value since the November restructuring, jumped 5.9 percent to 17.15 shillings ($0.1666) on Thursday.</p>

How Trump presidency is reshaping global events

<p>I love baseball. I’ve been watching since 1964, when I was seven years old. It’s in my blood as it is for many of my generation. It’s uniquely American. Just like mom and apple pie. And July 4<sup>th</sup> and fireworks.</p>
<p>Up until I was around ten years old, I was more of a New York Mets fan because we only lived a few minutes away from Shea Stadium in Queens. But I was equally devoted to the Yankees too, and ultimately, ended up rooting for them as I got older. Man, the dilemmas we faced when we were kids.</p>
<p>Back in those days, my father, who worked in the garment center, would get cheap Mets tickets from his mobster bookie, Joe “The Hat.” Joe was like a character from an era gone by, and wore a large, white fedora, earning him the nickname. He was the real deal. Never without a half-smoked cigar jutting out of the corner of his mouth, he owned a tiny, hole in the wall, barber shop on West 39<sup>th</sup> Street that had one of those old, striped barber poles out in front. From that storefront, “The Hat” took bets on everything from baseball and football to horseracing and boxing. My Dad said he once heard there was a dice game in the back, although he never actually saw it.</p>
<h4>New York&#8217;s Yankees and Mets attracted all the best ballplayers</h4>
<p>One of the great things about growing up in New York was that, because we had two teams here, all the best ballplayers of my generation either played here, or passed through, at some point during their careers. Everyone from Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays to Pete Rose, Roberto Clemente, Roger Maris, Tom Seaver, and Hank Aaron among others. And if they didn’t play for the Mets or Yankees, then they faced them as competitors. And thanks to Joe “The Hat,” I got to see most of them play live.</p>
<p>There must have been a million summer afternoons too, where I’d sprawl out like a giant, gangly octopus on the couch, and watch a game from start to finish on TV. All nine innings. Days seemed to move ever so slowly back then. And baseball was part of the reason why. Sometimes, if you were watching a game on a Saturday or Sunday, it felt like someone flipped the switch and set life to slow motion. A single inning could take fifteen minutes or more. And the three-plus hours it usually took to watch an entire game, seemed like ten. I loved every minute of it.</p>
<p>Today, fifty-three years later, I still love it. And I watch whenever I can, although it’s hard unless I’m home alone. But I got lucky the other day, and caught the Yankees playing the Texas Rangers on television, right from the first pitch. It was a typical hot, Sunday afternoon in late June. Eighty-five or so degrees outside. The Yankee Stadium crowd was quietly buzzing in the background. And it was all sun and blue skies above. It was baseball in New York. And it felt just like it used to when I was a kid.</p>
<p>Well, at least for a little while.</p>
<h4>The world is an anxious place these days</h4>
<p>But it’s no longer 1964, and life outside is no longer slow. The world is an anxious place these days. My iPhone reminds me of this continually, beeping dozens of toxic CNN headline alerts at me all day long. Trump, North Korea, Russia, Syria, Iran, ISIS, nukes, terrorism, healthcare, travel bans, race, gender, who can go into what bathroom, Hollywood dimwits, religion, guns, speech, hate, violence&#8230;</p>
<p>Stop it already!!! I can’t take it anymore!!!</p>
<p>Frankly, I don’t care how many missiles Kim Jong-un just tested. Or what Donald Trump just tweeted about Mika Brzezinski. Or who the Russians conspired with. Even what a colossal ignoramus Kathy Griffin is. A few weeks ago, it got so bad, I even turned off my iPhone completely a couple of times. But it really didn’t matter because everybody around me still had theirs, and were locked into them like iPhone robots.</p>
<h4>People are oblivious to most things going on around them</h4>
<p>Sometimes, when I walk down the street in the city, people drift by me in a trance-like, almost catatonic, state plugged into the broader digital collective, and oblivious to most things going on around them. There is now a near-constant stream of information and communications being fed into our brains via our iPhones. Outside of my ninety-year-old mother, the rest of the U.S. is slowly overdosing on the crack-cocaine epidemic of our time: information overload. You just can’t escape it. Because now, it’s a way of life.</p>
<p>But then, just for a moment, I looked back at the TV and the Yankee game. I listened to one of the announcer’s marveling over a ball that was just hit deep into the outfield, and how it bounced off the wall, and ricocheted away from the left fielder. And I looked at the perfectly manicured, cross-hatched, green grass on the field reflecting the sunlight. And the shadows from the stadiums upper façade, slowly overtaking the rest of the diamond from the earlier innings. I watched the Yankee’s pitcher go through his pre-pitch routine, nervously spinning the ball in his hand, and then adjusting the brim on his cap so it sat just off to the left of his head. And the batter up at the plate, as he rapped the bat against his cleats a few times to shake loose the dirt that was stuck in the heel.</p>
<h4>Baseball is antithetical to the never-ending flood of rage and vitriol</h4>
<p>And as I briefly stared at the television, I thought about how much I’ve always loved baseball. What a refuge it is for me. Because it’s completely antithetical to the way life is today. And it&#8217;s antithetical to the never-ending flood of rage and vitriol we’ve come to accept as the new normal.</p>
<p>So, if you feel like you need a place to hide, or if you just don’t want to hear all the screaming and yelling anymore, try to find yourself a baseball game on television. Tune into the Mets or Yankees. Or maybe Red Sox or Cubs. Stop looking at your iPhone alerts. Turn the phone off. Lower the blinds and turn up the air conditioning. Grab a beer and some chips. Kick back and slow down. Breathe. Take in the game. And get away. What could be better?</p>
<p>Because during a baseball game, there is no Donald Trump or Russia. There are no Democrats or Republicans either. And no healthcare debate or immigration reform.</p>
<p>During a baseball game, there’s just baseball and you. Home runs, double plays, batting averages, curveballs and sinkers.</p>
<p>It’s nice and slow, and easy and safe. And that works just fine for me.</p>
<p>Something tells me that, if Joe “The Hat” was still alive today, he would’ve been pretty proud of me.</p>


Op-Ed: Baseball as metaphor for a better, less anxious life

<p>On November 8<sup>th</sup>, to everyone’s surprise, American voters &#8211; and perhaps to a lesser extent, Vladimir Putin &#8211; gave Donald Trump the keys to the Kingdom. As Trump prepares to assume the throne on January 20th, he’ll have a full plate of foreign policy challenges awaiting him on day one. Friends and foes alike &#8211; of which there seems to be little discernable difference most of the time &#8211; have got to be more than a little concerned as Trump will be like no other US president before him. And they know it.  </p>
<p>Iran, Syria, North Korea and ISIS now comprise the 2017 iteration of the “Axis of Evil”, as George W. Bush so aptly coined it back in 2002.  Then add in our “frenemies” like China and Russia (friends who are really enemies as my teenage daughter calls it) and the group resembles a school of piranhas waiting to strike a gravely injured fish swimming by. Each one poses multidimensional foreign policy nightmares for Trump &#8211; everything from armed conflicts at hot spots around the world to trade disagreements, nuclear threats, terrorism, cyber security and state-sponsored hacking, climate change, currency manipulation and energy.</p>

<p>Given these ever-amplifying foreign policy challenges that Trump will inherit from Barack Obama, one has to wonder what the US’s policy will be towards Africa &#8211; and other emerging markets. If I was the president of an African country right now, Trump’s election would be, shall we say, more than a little disconcerting.</p>
<p>Here’s why. The US’s view of the world is changing – as is the world’s view. Simply stated, much of Africa will not be a core strategic interest to the US under Trump. Historically, Africa as a whole has never been a policy priority for the US but did command differing levels of attention and assistance depending on who occupied the White House. Former President Bill Clinton signed AGOA (The African Growth and Opportunity Act) into law in 2000 but that was his primary contribution. Conversely, by far the worst atrocity during his time in office was that close to 1,000,000 Rwandans, mainly Tutsi, were killed in a brutal ethnic cleansing. Although the Clinton Administration and the international community, including the UN, was aware of the genocide taking place, no action was taken. President George W. Bush’s Africa policy was probably the most robust of any modern-day president. He provided US assistance in helping to end civil wars in Sudan, Congo, Angola, Liberia and Sierra Leone even though direct American interests were not at risk. In his second term, he launched development programmes in several of these countries to help them recover on an economic and humanitarian level. President Obama, despite his Kenyan roots, has fallen short by most measures. But he continued to fund Aids programmes there increasing the number of people receiving treatment from 1.7 million to 6.7 million which is a notable achievement. And he introduced the much-touted Power Africa to try to address the critical power shortages across the continent although it has not lived up to the hype.</p>

<p>But Donald Trump will be markedly different than his predecessors. While it is obvious that any country’s foreign policy is ultimately for their benefit, Trump will take it to the extreme. His foreign policy will be formulated directly around his campaign slogan: “America First”. And he means it literally. Just like a new management team coming into a recently acquired company, Trump and his cabinet of supply-side business leaders and retired Generals will take a wrecking ball to those policies not considered strategically vital – and solidly in America’s interest. Nothing will be off the table.</p>
<p>Therein lies the problem for much of Africa. Is it essential to America &#8211; in the eyes of Donald Trump &#8211; to provide Africa with deep economic, humanitarian and military support that is funded by US taxpayer money?  </p>
<p>There is little doubt in Washington’s diplomatic circles that Trump’s Africa policies will be a far cry from Barack Obama’s and George W. Bush’s. The first hint at how Africa would be viewed by the incoming Trump administration was gleaned during the presidential campaign. As a candidate, he paid little attention to Africa in his speeches and referred to the continent only in relation to al-Qaeda’s 1998 bombings of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, and he came under fire for comments related to the large numbers of Somali refugees in Minnesota, a state Hillary Clinton later won. For the record, she never mentioned Africa either.</p>
<p>However, to comprehend how he will approach Africa and other geopolitical interests, one needs to understand what makes Donald Trump who he is. First and foremost, he’s a businessman. A negotiator. A dealmaker. A salesman. A closer. A showman. And second, he’s a New Yorker. Brash, in your face and no-holds barred. And he will become indignant if you cross him.</p>
<p>As a businessman, Trump sees everything through a single lens &#8211; return on investment (ROI). This is what he has based every business decision on for over 40 years. It’s the tape measure in his toolkit. It quantifies what he gets back on his investments. And now, as president, he will apply that same ratio to foreign policy to measure what America gets back from its allies. Simply stated, what is their ROI to the US? It is clear that Trump will run his administration more as a businessman and CEO, and less as a politician. On his desk in the Oval Office should be a nameplate that reads;</p>
<p>“Donald J. Trump: President and Dealmaker in Chief.”</p>
<p>The difficulty for Africa is that its geopolitical and economic value &#8211; as it relates to Trump’s vision for the US &#8211; simply won’t land it anywhere near the top of his list of foreign policy priorities. To Trump the businessman, much of Africa has a low ROI &#8211; certainly as compared to countries like the UK, France, Israel, Japan, South Korea and Germany not to mention “frenemies” like Russia and China.</p>
<p>There will, of course, continue to be trade between Africa and the US as commodities are always an economic driver irrespective of their current prices. But there is every reason to expect that under a Trump administration the US will be less engaged in Africa especially where it concerns the expenditure of taxpayer money on economic and humanitarian development initiatives. The reality is that the US is a net exporter of financial aid and humanitarian assistance to Africa &#8211; net of the commodities and resources that the US imports from it. And because of this, much of the continent will be caught in Trump’s crosshairs ultimately putting many of these important aid programmes at risk.</p>
<p>So what will be the defining theme with regards to the broader US policy on Africa under Trump? Simple. Combating terrorism.</p>
<p>Outside of oil and other extractive commodities, positioning the US for the fight against terror is Africa’s primary value to Trump. Stated more bluntly: kill ISIS and all its offspring. This is Africa’s ROI. The US faces serious and sustained security challenges across Africa. Terrorism, which not only has the capacity to destabilise key African countries is also a breeding ground for exporting violence to the US and Europe. Hot spots like <a href="http://www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/menasource/saving-libya-to-defend-nato-s-southern-flank" target="_blank">Libya</a> must build and maintain its government while fighting to eradicate ISIS. And the ISIS-aligned Nigerian militant group Boko Haram <a href="http://europe.newsweek.com/isis-affiliate-claims-40-troops-killed-nigeria-500969">continues to wreak havoc</a> as does al-Qaeda-linked Somali terror group Al-Shabab. As a result, the US will be forced to engage these terror threats emanating from across Africa.</p>
<p>But there is a real opportunity to broaden Trump’s limited policy view if African leaders choose to act upon it. The door remains very much open to them to reach out and appeal to Trump the businessman. Trump the dealmaker. Trump the negotiator. Trump the salesman. His ego would welcome it. African countries have the opportunity to change their relationship with the US &#8211; and take ownership of that process &#8211; instead of just waiting to see what Trump does. By acting proactively, it enables Africa to potentially increase its ROI &#8211; and change its link to the US from that of “donor-recipient” to one based on mutual benefit.</p>
<p>And that’s a deal that Donald Trump the businessman will make every time.</p>
<p>But so far, of the 54 nations that comprise Africa, only a handful of African presidents have reached out to congratulate Trump. Like him or not, he is the president of the world’s lone superpower and is reassessing everything. Therein lies the opportunity. The opening is there now.</p>
<p>So once Trump &#8211; the businessman &#8211; assumes the Presidency this month, it would probably be a good idea if the leaders of some of Africa’s other countries reached out to the new president with this message:</p>
<p>“We’re open for business. Let’s make a deal”.</p>
<p>That’s a message he’ll definitely understand.</p>

Op-Ed: What US President Trump wants from Africa

<p>The United States said on Monday Gambia had reached &#8220;a very dangerous moment&#8221; as West African leaders prepared to travel there to tell long-ruling leader Yahya Jammeh to accept his election defeat and step down.</p>
<p>Jammeh had quickly conceded defeat to Adama Barrow, his challenger in the Dec. 1 presidential election. But in a volte-face that drew international condemnation he rejected the poll results on Friday.</p>
<p>His ruling party said he would challenge the election outcome at the Supreme Court, raising the prospect that Barrow&#8217;s victory, which was poised to end 22 years of Jammeh&#8217;s authoritarian rule, could be overturned.</p>

<p>She said some military officers had sided with Jammeh following his shock reversal. But she added that the Council was unified in its condemnation of the former coup leader&#8217;s actions.</p>
<p>&#8220;Everybody is singing from the same sheet of music and the song is clear: you have lost the election, President Jammeh, and you must give up power peacefully,&#8221; Power said.</p>
<p>Liberia&#8217;s President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, a Nobel peace laureate and current chair of the West African regional body ECOWAS, is due to travel to Gambia on Tuesday.</p>
<p>She will head a delegation of West African heads of state including Nigeria&#8217;s Muhammadu Buhari, John Mahama of Ghana and Sierra Leone&#8217;s Ernest Bai Koroma.</p>
<p>&#8220;These heads of state will ask him to leave power,&#8221; the foreign ministry of Gambia&#8217;s neighbour, Senegal, which has taken a particularly aggressive stance towards Jammeh, said in a statement. It called the trip &#8220;a last chance mission&#8221; for Gambia&#8217;s president.</p>
<p>The United States, European Union, African Union, United Nations and ECOWAS have all pressed Jammeh to respect the election result.</p>
<p>Gambia&#8217;s Communications Minister Sheriff Bojang was not reachable for comment on Monday.</p>
<p><strong>&#8220;WE WANT PEACE&#8221;</strong></p>
<p>Barrow told Reuters in the capital Banjul that he expected Johnson Sirleaf&#8217;s delegation to ensure an &#8220;expedited transitional period&#8221; that would pave the way for a transfer of power.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are not talking about a military option. We want to safeguard our democracy and we want peace,&#8221; he said, but added that he was concerned for his own safety.</p>
<p>&#8220;I have no official security. As president-elect, I should not be exposed in the way I am today,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>Barrow said he had not had any communication with Jammeh&#8217;s government since the president&#8217;s televised announcement on Friday. Unarmed supporters surround his residence in the capital Banjul as protection and move with him when he leaves his home.</p>
<p>Jammeh seized power in a coup in 1994 when he was an army lieutenant and went on to win four elections that were criticised by rights monitors. International human rights groups accuse him of widespread violations and repression.</p>
<p>He declared Gambia an Islamic Republic last year and in October announced its withdrawal from the International Criminal Court.</p>
<p>Rights groups say Jammeh exerts strong influence over the Supreme Court, which has not held session in a year and a half. There is currently only a sitting chief justice. And so in order to hear Jammeh&#8217;s complaint, legal experts believe at least four more judges must be appointed.</p>
<p>Gambia&#8217;s bar association on Monday rejected the prospect of a Supreme Court staffed with new appointees to hear Jammeh&#8217;s challenge and called on its members to boycott the country&#8217;s courts until he hands over power to president-elect Barrow.</p>
<p>&#8220;In the present circumstances, any Supreme Court empanelled by the outgoing President Jammeh for the purpose of hearing his election petition would be fundamentally tainted,&#8221; it said.﻿</p>
