Yesterday’s South Africa’s GDP data for the second quarter revealed that The mining and quarrying industry decreased by 73.1 per cent as the demand for mineral products fell as global markets entered into strict COVID-19 lock-downs; contributing to decreased production in platinum , gold and other metals. However we are seeing a glimpse of recovery for South African miners as they are posting above average results and production increases. South Africa’s Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) has issued guidelines for a mandatory Code of Practise to companies in the mining industry on managing the COVID-19 pandemic according to the terms of the Mine Health and Safety Act.
Last week the South African Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy Gwede Mantashe announced that mining companies may start re-opening at limited capacities during the extend national lock-down. The mining sector being shut down during the lock-down was of particular concern as our resource based economy will be severely hurt by supply chain disruptions.
