<p>Oil prices extended losses on Monday with investors weighing higher OPEC+ production from October against a sharp drop in output from Libya amid sluggish demand in China and the U.S., the world&#8217;s two biggest oil consumers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-south-africa-markets">SOUTH AFRICA MARKETS</h2>



<p>South Africa&#8217;s rand was stable on Friday against a buoyant dollar, after the local unit hit a fresh 13-month high earlier in the day supported by improved investor sentiment on signs the domestic economy is starting to gain momentum.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nigeria-petroleum">NIGERIA PETROLEUM</h2>



<p>Nigeria&#8217;s state-oil firm NNPC on Sunday said it is facing financial strain making it unable to import petrol into Africa&#8217;s most populous nation, that has seen weeks-long fuel scarcity across its retail stations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-kenya-markets">KENYA MARKETS</h2>



<p>The Kenyan shilling was unchanged on Friday, with little market activity, traders said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-kenya-inflation">KENYA INFLATION</h2>



<p>Kenya&#8217;s inflation edged up to 4.4% year-on-year in August from 4.3% in July, data from the statistics office showed on Friday.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-china-africa-summit">CHINA AFRICA SUMMIT</h2>



<p>China will urge a summit of 50 African nations in Beijing this week to take more of its goods, before Western curbs kick in on its exports such as electric vehicles and solar panels, in exchange for more pledges of loans and investment.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-democratic-republic-of-congo-gold">DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO GOLD</h2>



<p>Democratic Republic of Congo is looking for new buyers of gold from its eastern territories after taking full control of Primera Gold which had an exclusive contract to buy and sell gold mined in the east, the company&#8217;s head said.</p>

<p>BEIJING/NAIROBI, Sept 2 (Reuters)&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;China will urge a summit of 50 African nations in Beijing this week to take more of its goods, before Western curbs kick in on its exports such as electric vehicles and solar panels, in exchange for more pledges of loans and investment.</p>



<p>But the dozens of African leaders arriving in the Chinese capital for the three-yearly event may not be easy bait. They will want to hear how China plans to meet an unfulfilled pledge from the previous summit in 2021 to buy $300 billion of goods.</p>



<p>They will also seek assurances on the progress of incomplete Chinese-funded infrastructure projects, such as a railway designed to link the greater East African region.</p>



<p>&#8220;The prize is going to go to those countries who have carefully studied the changes in China and align their proposals with China&#8217;s new slimmed-down priorities,&#8221; said Eric Olander, co-founder of the China-Global South Project.</p>



<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s a big ask for a continent that generally has very poor China literacy.&#8221;</p>



<p>Africa&#8217;s biggest two-way lender, investor and trade partner is moving away from funding big-ticket projects in the resource-rich continent, preferring instead to sell it the advanced and green technologies Chinese firms have invested in heavily.</p>



<p>As Western curbs on Chinese exports loom, Beijing&#8217;s top priority will be finding buyers for its EVs and solar panels, areas where the U.S. and European Union say it has overcapacity, and building overseas production bases for emerging markets.</p>



<p>China has already started tweaking conditions for its loans to Africa, setting aside more for solar farms, EV plants and 5G Wi-Fi facilities, while cutting back on bridges, ports and railways.</p>



<p>Last year, China offered 13 loans of just $4.2 billion to eight African states and two regional banks, data from Boston University&#8217;s Global Development Policy Centre showed, with about $500 million for hydropower and solar projects.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geopolitical-jostling">GEOPOLITICAL JOSTLING</h2>



<p>When President Xi Jinping opens the ninth Forum on China-Africa Co-operation Summit on Thursday, he is expected to pitch plugging into China&#8217;s burgeoning green energy industry to leaders from Gambia, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.</p>



<p>In attendance will also be delegates from every African state except Eswatini, with which Beijing has no ties.</p>



<p>To avoid losing market share, China&#8217;s geopolitical rival, the United States, has started to host African leaders.</p>



<p>Britain, Italy, Russia and South Korea have also held Africa summits in recent years, recognising the potential of the region&#8217;s young people and its 54 U.N. seats.</p>



<p>China&#8217;s outsized role as a financial and trade partner makes its meetings a far bigger deal, however.</p>



<p>&#8220;There is no other development partner that does that much,&#8221; said Hannah Ryder, founder of Development Reimagined, an African-owned consultancy.</p>



<p>&#8220;But are African leaders able to push China to really dig in so that the balance of the &#8216;win&#8217; is way more towards the African side?&#8221;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-matching-wants-and-needs">MATCHING WANTS AND NEEDS</h2>



<p>China will want to talk up boosting trade and access to minerals like copper, cobalt and lithium in countries such as Botswana, Namibia, and Zimbabwe.</p>



<p>But it could be cautious about more funding commitments following debt restructuring bids in economies such as Chad, Ethiopia, Ghana and Zambia, since the 2021 summit.</p>



<p>&#8220;We are likely to see a continued prudence in terms of financing mega projects,&#8221; said Lina Benabdallah, of the Centre for African Studies at Harvard University, adding that Beijing would push for technology transfers instead.</p>



<p>&#8220;I am most certainly keen to understand how many new finance commitments may come out of this, and how they&#8217;re going to deal with existing debt to African countries,&#8221; said Yvette Babb, portfolio manager at asset management firm William Blair.</p>



<p>But China&#8217;s enthusiasm to lend might be dampened by security concerns, such as a spat between Niger and Benin that killed six Nigerien soldiers guarding a PetroChina-backed pipeline, or deadly protests in Kenya over tax hikes.</p>

<p>JOHANNESBURG, Aug 30 (Reuters)&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;South Africa&#8217;s rand strengthened to a fresh 13-month high on Friday, supported by improved investor sentiment on signs the domestic economy is starting to gain momentum.</p>



<p>At 0935 GMT, the rand was 0.7% higher at 17.63 per dollar. It earlier hit 17.5950 against the greenback, a level not seen since late July 2023.</p>



<p>The rand&#8217;s gains come ahead of U.S. core personal consumption expenditure data, a key inflation reading, later on Friday that could cement bets on a Federal Reserve interest rate cut next month.</p>



<p>Analysts have linked recent rand strength to a structural improvement on the supply side of Africa&#8217;s most industrialised economy, with South Africa not witnessing rolling power cuts for over 150 days thanks to a big improvement in state power utility Eskom&#8217;s performance.</p>



<p>&#8220;There have been no power cuts in South Africa for several months, which may not sound very impressive at first, but this has not happened in South Africa for years,&#8221; Commerzbank FX analyst Volkmar Baur said in a research note.</p>



<p>Power cuts have hampered South Africa&#8217;s economic growth for over a decade, with outages on a record 335 days last year.</p>



<p>Inflation also appears to have turned a corner.</p>



<p>Data released on Thursday showed annual producer inflation in South Africa dropped to 4.2% in July.</p>



<p>July consumer inflation fell to a three-year low of 4.6%, falling close to the midpoint of the South African central bank&#8217;s 3% to 6% target range and bolstering expectations the bank will cut its main interest rate for the first time in four years next month.</p>



<p>Baur said lower domestic interest rates could stimulate further investment and structural improvements in the economy.</p>



<p>&#8220;This positive development reduces the risk premium that the foreign exchange market has placed on South Africa in recent years and strengthens the rand,&#8221; he added.</p>



<p>South Africa&#8217;s central bank governor Lesetja Kganyago said on Thursday that the country was getting to grips with reforms that could lift its growth potential.</p>



<p>On the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the Top-40 index was down 0.4%.</p>

<p>KAMPALA, Aug 29 (Reuters)&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;The Ugandan shilling&nbsp;UGX=&nbsp;was little-changed on Thursday, with some inflows of dollars from offshore investors who participated in this week&#8217;s Treasury auction giving support, traders said.</p>



<p>At 1046 GMT, commercial banks quoted the shilling at 3,710/3,720, compared with Wednesday&#8217;s closing rate of 3,712/3,722.</p>

<p>NAIROBI, Aug 29 (Reuters) &#8211; The Kenyan shilling KES= was flat on Thursday, as month-end hard-currency demand from the manufacturing sector was offset by foreign investor inflows for the local bond market, traders said.<br><br>At 0835 GMT, LSEG data showed the shilling at 128.25/129.25 to the U.S. dollar, the same as at the close of Wednesday&#8217;s session.<br><br>&#8220;It&#8217;s very stable. Demand and supply seem to be evenly matched. There&#8217;s been some good (FX) demand but offshore flows are coming for the infrastructure bond,&#8221; one trader said.<br><br>The shilling has been relatively steady for several months, after rallying strongly in the first half of 2024 as concerns eased that the East African country would default on a $2 billion Eurobond that matured in June.<br><br>(Reporting by Hereward HollandEditing by Alexander Winning)</p>

<p>JOHANNESBURG, Aug 28 (Reuters)&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;The South African rand slipped early on Wednesday, ahead of economic data releases towards the end of the week.</p>



<p>The rand was at 17.7875 against the dollar by 0744 GMT, 0.4% weaker than its previous close.</p>



<p>The dollar index showing its performance against a basket of currencies, was last up 0.18%.</p>



<p>South African investors are awaiting July producer inflation data on Thursday and money supply, trade and budget balance figures on Friday for the latest indications on the health of the domestic economy.</p>



<p>Global market focus this week will be on a preliminary estimate for U.S. gross domestic product in the second quarter and the core personal consumption expenditures (PCE) index, the U.S. Federal Reserve&#8217;s preferred inflation measure.</p>



<p>The rand, like most emerging market currencies, tends to track international moves as well as local economic events.</p>



<p>On the stock market, the Top-40 index was down about 0.2%.</p>



<p>South Africa&#8217;s benchmark 2030 government bond was marginally weaker in early deals, with the yield up 0.5 basis point at 9.120%.</p>

<p>JOHANNESBURG, Aug 27 (Reuters)&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;The South African rand was little changed in early trading on Tuesday, ahead of several local data releases later this week.</p>



<p>At 0737 GMT, the rand traded at 17.7650 against the dollar, near its Monday closing level of 17.7575.</p>



<p>South African investors will focus on July&#8217;s producer inflation data on Thursday and money supply, budget and trade balance data on Friday, which could give clues on the health of Africa&#8217;s most industrialised economy.</p>



<p>Like other risk-sensitive currencies, the rand could also take direction from global drivers.</p>



<p>&#8220;The dollar-rand has encountered tough support around the 17.7000 mark&#8230; It is as if the currency pair is waiting for a catalyst that will open the door for another leg of rand appreciation,&#8221; said ETM Analytics in a research note.</p>



<p>&#8220;In the short term, it is unclear what that might be.&#8221;</p>



<p>On the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the blue-chip Top-40 index was about 0.2% up in early trade.</p>

<p>JOHANNESBURG, Aug 26 (Reuters)&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;South Africa&#8217;s rand weakened early on Monday, ahead of a slew of local economic data releases this week, which could give hints on the health of the local economy.</p>



<p>At 0732 GMT, the rand traded at 17.80 against the dollar, 0.51% weaker than its previous close.</p>



<p>The rand, like most emerging market currencies, benefited from a softer dollar on Friday after comments from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell solidified bets of a September rate cut.</p>



<p>South African investors will focus on monthly producer inflation, money supply, budget and trade balance data due later this week.</p>



<p>On the stock market, the Top-40 index was little changed in early trade.</p>



<p>South Africa&#8217;s benchmark 2030 government bond was weaker in early deals, with the yield up 2.5 basis points to 9.095%.</p>
